people bring up the fact that steve is a huge theorizer in the show, and therefore bylers arent delusional for paying attention to small details, and I think that's great, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about this scene.

we, as bylers, are CONSTANTLY told that the details, subtext, and queercoding we pickup on are just small things that could be a coincidence, or just don't matter:
"you're seeing patterns that aren't there. coincidence."
"but what if...its not?"
and who was right?

Jonathan Might Reveal the Painting Lie to Mike
I see a lot of Bylers talk about El being the one to reveal Will's painting lie to Mike in season five- which certainly could happen. But I think that it's going to be Jonathan who clues Mike in on the fact that Will lied to him about El commissioning the painting. And here's why;
There are only four characters who know that painting exists (as of season four): Will, El, Mike and Jonathan. Only two of those characters know the true origins of the painting and what it actually symbolizes: Will and Jonathan.
Is it possible that Will just tells Mike the truth on his own? Probably not. Although Will is apparently going to be a bit more bold this season- I just don't see the point in having him project his feelings the way they did in season four, only to have him then just own up to them in season five (at least without provocation).
Is it possible Mike will just figure it out himself? No, I really don't think so. Mike is very clever and usually pretty in-tune with Will's feelings. But I do not see this happening either. Whether you're in the camp of "Mike has no idea Will was lying" or "He definitely knows, he's just afraid to acknowledge it," the fact still remains that Mike has accepted Will's lie as the truth. Unless it's brought back up by someone else- I don't think Mike is going to unpack the things Will told him on his own.
Is it possible that Mike will talk to El about the painting and she'll reveal that she never commissioned it. Absolutely. That is still 100% possible. However, I think the last link in this chain is going to be the one that sobers Mike up a little. Our favorite protective older brother; Jonathan Byers.
The first time I watched the van scene, I assumed the reason there was such a heavy emphasis on Jonathan's reaction to Will's obvious lie was because it would be something Jonathan was going to talk to Will about later in season four. Which it was.
But then, shortly after season four came out, Noah Schnapp did an interview with Variety where he said this (in regards to Will & Jonathan's scene);
"So this scene was actually not originally written in the script. It was only until after I did the scene of me in the van, where they saw me crying and the protectiveness that you see with Jonathan looking in the rearview mirror. They were like, we need a scene with that. So they wrote it as we were filming."
That means that they filmed the van scene- they intentionally included all of the shots of Jonathan bearing witness to Will's lie. But the payoff wasn't the talk Jonathan has with Will later. That was added because it seemed fitting but it was never the purpose of Jonathan's presence during the van scene.
So. . what was the purpose of emphasizing Jonathan's reaction to Will's lie? Why was it so important to make sure the audience knew Jonathan both saw and heard what happened between Will and Mike?
I think it's because Jonathan will be the one to clue Mike in about the lie. I don't think he's going to outright tell Mike about Will's feelings- because Jonathan clearly respects and cares for Will too much to expose his secrets like that. But I do think that something Jonathan says might be the catalyst that opens Mike's eyes (in one way or another).
