male characters from childhood cartoons that I unknowingly had gender envy for
Feeling kinda, dysphoric today so here are some useless ramblings that will make me feel better.
Number 1: Johnny Test.
now this kid (like most on this list) were just fucking disasters most of the time, little shits that kept fucking shit up. I fucked shit up a lot as a kid, plus Johnny Test's pure level of recklessness and lack of sense of self-preservation has shaped me into the disaster I am today. Plus the flame hair was (and is) so fucking cool, I wanted hair like that so badly.
Number 2: Ben Tennyson (2005)
I don't even need to explain why this kid is the shit. He's fucking Ben 10, he can turn into aliens, me and my little brothers favorite was Humungousaur just cause of sheer destructive force alone. He was a bit of an obnoxious, cocky brat and I ate that up growing up.
Number 3: Kevin Levin (2005)
Come on dude just look at this rocking kid. Grungy and angry and honestly actually just as fucking dumb as Tennyson.
Ultimate Alien Kevin Levin represents the punk-goth himbo I aspire to be.
Number 4: Danny Phantom
Now this one was confusing for me for a while cause for a long time I thought he was a childhood crush but au contraire he was both a childhood crush and desperately wished to be him. (kinda have the same thing going on with Sam Manson too) but honestly only really liked him in his Phantom form, largely cause of the white hair and awesome ghost powers.
Number 5: Jake Long from All American Dragon
He had everything, skateboarding (I wanted to skateboard so bad) the flaming hair, the shape shifting powers he could turn into a literal dragon bro!
Number 6: James Adams from the Cherub Series
This isn't a cartoon but it is a graphic novel from a novel series which I also immensely enjoyed growing up.
Reading this graphic novel literally altered my brain chemistry, I think discovering this series as a kid and reading the story and experiencing the events through James' lens is probably THE most gender euphoric I've felt ever.
This kid starts off as such a fucking loser and a huge fuck up, and then raises in his ranks as a spy, the story is so gritty and raw and action packed. I was obsessed with this series for a long time.
(I do think if I was to read it now though there'd probably be a thing or two that would not hold up in by todays moral standards - however I'm permitting the fog of nostalgia to let me forget for now.)

I need you all to understand how insane it is that Mizu literally almost dying and being overpowered by hundreds of men is placed adjacent to when she let herself be intimate with the man who would eventually betray her. The way those scenes were cut was intentional in the way that yeah, Mizu was just reminiscing of her old life in how she became the ‘monster’ she thinks she is, but it’s also how it implies that IT FELT THE SAME TO HER. Being vulnerable has ALWAYS led to life or death ultimatums, so much so that now she associates them all together. Revenge or love, what’s the difference? Are they not the same? She doesn’t have the luxury of allowing herself that intimacy, because the love has always been tainted by betrayal and that betrayal has always led to bloodshed; her or them.
