Superman fans when you tell them that a fictional immigrant character can come from an imperfect nation and still serve the themes of the story and the allegory very well:

When I started posting more on Tumblr I never expected to just simply be dealing with stupid people more. So let’s talk about Tom King’s involvement with the DCU. We only know that he was one of the first people to read the script and give notes, we don’t know how involved those notes were and we certainly know that he wasn’t majorly involved in the movie’s production afterwards. Still, we know that he’s working on shows later down the line and Supergirl is heavily based on his Woman of Tomorrow book.
I will preface this by saying that I hate Tom King, I really do. Many of his books have insanely sluggish writing, he neuters a lot of the pre existing characters that he writes when he isn’t getting help, and his history as a war criminal who helped with plotting out the invasion of Iraq should be known more especially given his lineup of books talking about just how much his main characters regret their war crimes. And yes, there are plenty of other DC writers that should’ve and I hope getting a writing spot for the DCU, Mark Waid being the most obvious candidate. Using Tom King to discredit DC is still really stupid to me. And while I could try to justify King’s inclusion I’m not because not only is the answer kinda unfortunate but that really isn’t the point.
The point is that it’s incredibly elitist to go to people who are enjoying a good movie and calling them stupid for enjoying it solely based on an incredibly loose guilty by association link. Gunn has his own beliefs on the current climate of the world that were shown in the movie and don’t align with the shit King’s done and believes in. And if you’re doing it here for the DCU, you’re doing it for DC as a whole. Tom King is still part of the brand (and unfortunately here to stay) but there are still plenty of other writers part of the company that tell good stories and are worth a damn. The DCU projects that aren’t made by him do not lose their luster just because he’s a part of the company. If you don’t want to support King’s works that’s perfectly fine and I don’t care. But that doesn’t give you the right to a moral high ground and to put other people on blast for not following your footsteps.
Otherwise you sound like these guys but with extra steps.

If you unironically claim that the new Superman movie is "anti-Israel", I'm not taking anything you say seriously.
Tumblr media
Tom King, a former CIA agent, is heavily involved with the DCU. Not to mention, James Gunn is literally glazing the shit out of him every chance he gets!
For all it's worth, it's best to just boycott the movie entirely, as it's has Tom King's war-torn blood all over it.

Yes I watched the new Superman movie, yes it was fantastic and yes I want to talk about Jor-El and Lara.
I think the hate is way too overblown. Spoilers btw.
I get why people would be put off with this take on them being more evil (keep in mind we don’t know if all of Krypton are evil here) but when watching the film it actually furthers the story along for the best as well as Clark’s character arc. Clark’s main arc is learning to let go of the expectations his birth parents actually had for him and making his own choices. The message works because Clark ultimately still makes the right choices regardless of the expectations set for him but rather his own experiences and the film ends with him embracing both his life on Earth and what he has left of Krypton.
Is the twist still weird? Kinda, yeah. It’s the one singular aspect of the film I am pretty mixed on. Jor-El and Lara wanting Clark to repopulate Krypton with Earth’s population makes sense but the framing of it is quite weird, especially when characterizing Jor-El. I think he’s a character who always has the capacity to suck shit but there are far more nuanced depictions of him in other media. I didn’t need this movie to get into Krypton much at all so I’ll let it slide but I expect future projects to pick up the pace.
With all that said now let’s get into why I think the extreme amount of hate towards this decision is dumb. Superman can have different immigrant stories, it doesn’t have to be the same one for every interpretation. Both this and MAWS portray a Clark who struggles more with the baggage that comes with his heritage, and I find that interesting and fun! Same with how it was handled in Smashes the Klan even though it’s doing something different from them! There is a difference between simply not liking this writing decision (which is valid) and calling it offensive to the immigrant allegory because you can’t stand it when Krypton isn’t perfect. Superman fans can be a special breed of allergic to anything that’s different to what they find definitive, and as a Superman fan myself I’n tired. I just want to enjoy new stories about a guy in red underwear without people trying to treat it like a moral issue. Genuinely the most media illiteracy towards the character I’ve had to deal with since Lois making the jump in MAWS.

Certain Superman fans are truly disgusting for accepting James Gunn's characterization of Els.
Let us all remember how good they actually are.

OK let me ask you two questions.
One, do you know what nuance is? Two, have you maybe also stopped to think to consider that a lot of soldiers are not bad people and the issue is that the system they have to work for is total ass? I could expand on this point here but I gotta make sure that you’re truly not just really, really stupid first.

Y’know what I think I finally have the energy to rant about this. This post is the equivalent of getting the right answer but the math is completely fucked up, and yes I’m referring to the tags.
People who complain about MAWS Lois and comparing her to Amber are genuinely some of the biggest losers I’ve met. When was the last time you actually engaged with the show? Genuine question by the way. If you engaged with it at all recently like I have you’d pick up on the fact that Lois lying and her more hypocritical traits are not only criticized in the show itself BUT Lois also makes the effort to improve herself as the show goes on and we see that these flaws mostly stem from her dad’s poor parenting. When you criticize a character like Lois for having flawed traits that the show acknowledges and builds on that’s just telling me you’re not engaging with the story well enough in the best case scenario. And I don’t wanna assume the worst case scenario but I think you have a good idea of what that’s like.
I prefer DCAU Lois but both versions are really good.

Y’know what I’m gonna use what little influence I usually have on this platform to finally let it out. And I’ll say this knowing full well I’ve been lagging behind big time in terms of content creation.
That being said the fact that there’s more fan content of Lex and Slade being a couple in MAWS despite it only being one frame at the very end of S2 than Leslie and Rory who are a CANONICAL lesbians of color couple is actually insane and y’all need to step up your game and stop being boring.
