“Happy birthday you insufferable bastard! Considering how bored I’d be without you around, this is a pretty important occasion worth celebrating right? I... uh tried to make a cake but that err... didn’t exactly work out. So I brought you a bunch of milk bread and that stupidly expensive wine you like instead! There’s a card in there too but don’t you dare read it until I’ve left, okay?” (chouko-asano)
birthday messages from @chouko-asano
“Aren’t you the best at making birthday greetings?” Hifumi sighs, rolling his eyes as he drags Chouko over for a hug. He can’t act surprised, but he’s still trying to contain the excitement he feels over Chouko remembering such an insignificant date. “Thank you my dear. I supposed I can’t be an insufferable bastard if I don’t have someone as wonderful as you to bother now, can I?”
“Now let’s get to that bottle together, shall we?”

hypmic au: Chouko is an assassin who raps with her division when she can. Set in the hypnosis mic universe.
victorian au: Chouko is the troublesome daughter of an extremely wealthy noble who hates the restrictive social expectations (and clothing) forced upon her. She often sneaks off to the woods around her estate to escape her nagging governess and disappointed parents. Proficient in fencing, hunting, scaring potential suitors away, pretending to be interested in what visiting lords have to say and climbing trees.
highschool au: Chouko is an acrobatic prodigy, competing in gymnastics on a national, and hopefully one day, international level. In school, she's something of an oddity, and isn't particularly popular even though she gets along with most of the jocks at her school.
university au: Majoring in Animal Biology with a minor of Biochemistry, Chouko aspires to be a vet or part of a animal rescue/rehabilitation crew. Between studying and free time, she works various part time jobs to pay off her tuition.
steampunk au: A well known and eccentric mechanic, willing to make anything for anyone who offers her a challenge. She mainly uses the blueprints of others and creates them on their behalf, as her own inventions rarely seem to go smoothly. Rarely seen outside her workshop or without her clockwork frog companions, and becomes crabby when interrupted while working.
goddess au: She's gone by many names over the centuries: Herne, Abnoba, Diana, Aja, Medenia etc. but she acquired the name 'Choumi' from a little japanese girl she had a run in with a few centuries back, and prefers to go by that. Her sacred animals are a butterfly or a frog.

Her already shaky confidence wavers as he gently takes her face in his hands. She’s the one who’d gently prodded him into this, but she still finds herself slightly afraid of what he’ll say. Though she’s learned to pick up on his subtle changes in emotion (even if she doesn’t always know what they mean), she’s suddenly confronted by the fact...that she really doesn’t know that much about him. Even so, silently, she resolves to accept whatever he tells her, for better or for worse.
But his reply, so quiet Chouko almost misses it, disarms her. No one’s ever told her that before, and she’s not quite sure what to do but nod. Almost reluctantly, she pulls her face away to retrieve a roll of bandages from her pocket, tossing it over to him. Lithe fingers pause at the hem of her hoodie, hesitating, before yanking it off.
She sits in front of him, upper half bare save for the bandages (long since stained the reddish brown of dried blood) that cover most of her torso and shoulders, bruises and old scars cutting through the few patches of bare skin. It feels vulnerable, far too vulnerable, but she turns her back to him anyway.
“Go ahead.”
Chouko waits patiently. She knows how difficult honesty is for him, but she’ll wrangle the truth from him even if she has to coax the words out one by one all night. Ignoring his obvious attempt to redirect the conversation back into safe territory, she shifts on the spot until she sits cross-legged in front of him. He’s still close enough that she can see the tiny flecks of copper in his brown eyes if she squints.
“Since you’re such a big baby, I’ll go first.” The words sit heavy on her tongue, but she forces them out anyway. “I’m in probably the most agony I’ve been in since I got mauled by wolves. Which is saying something. Every breath feels like knives in my chest. I’m also sweating a lot in these bandages. You probably didn’t need to know that. And… I hate feeling like I can’t defend myself.” Chouko shrugs, unsure of how to finish. She can almost physically feel the hit to her pride.
“Your turn.” She gives him a quick jab to the ribs, hoping to distract from her uncertainty.
A big baby? As if prompted, a childish pout sets upon his face, indignant. Hifumi winces at the jab. She’s got him. Worry freezes him, tired eyes snapping open in that moment to gaze at the face struggling to conceal an agony he swears that he can relate to.
Then maybe she’s right. Had he the words, no - the bravery to speak honestly to her, then perhaps he wouldn’t feel so exposed to her despite how close his cards are kept.
Such admission worries him further, hands reaching out to hold her face. How many times has he looked into the same golden hues, ignorant to the plights of a lady he’s all but seen as a nuisance. “If I talk, you promise that you won’t for a bit? I’ll change your bandages if you want.”
Even before she can muster a reply, a heavy sigh rolls through him ‘pon realising how such perception that saved him is near useless to Chouko. Fuck if he can’t understand her, but he’s still willing to try. “I hate… being unable to do anything for you right now.”

“Your turn.” She gives him a quick jab to the ribs, hoping to distract from her uncertainty.
Chouko merely shifts gaze from her lap to his face. They both know he’s trying to hide, but if he’s going to try to pry her feelings out, then so help her he’d better open up just as much.
“You’re an unusually bad liar today Fumi.” Is all she says. She watches his hands fidget, stiffening in surprise as they come to rest on either side of her face. She considers pushing his hands away, but something about the look on his face allows them to stay. Her eyes widen, ever so slightly at his words. There’s an indescribable tension in the air as she mulls over a response.
“You’re a dangerous guy, Hifumi. To others… and to yourself.” She says after a long pause, “But… if some company is what you need… then I guess I can do that- on the condition that you’re honest with me. If you can do that then I…guess I can try being honest too.” She places a hand over his, much smaller fingers barely covering his hand.
A brittle laugh leaves his lips, having be found out so easily. Had he the energy to protest he would’ve returned something believable - yet nothing. As her hands come upon his, his expression softens, smile returning once again at the tender feeling.
“It isn’t a lie for me to say that you’re the best company I have right now.” Words muddle under his tongue, unsure of how to carry their conversation. Surely Chouko knows that every word that should be honest from him are mired by confusing tones. Terrible - it’s the only way he can see himself. But if she was willing to let him speak, he doesn’t mind a little more honesty.
“Though I have to say,” he muses, “I’m not exactly used to your kindness. Don’t you want to say something else like you usually do?” Discomfort sets ill on his shoulders, unsure of their change. Surely he sees her the same as usual - he doubts that she’s changed much. Though, even now he has difficulty in picking up on her cues now.

If you can do that then I...guess I can try being honest too.” She places a hand over his, much smaller fingers barely covering his hand.
She laughs at his comment, ignoring the sharp pain that rushes through her chest as she does.
“I should hope so. I’d be devastated if I found out you were bread-cheating on me.”
Seeing his pout after her suggestion is way too cute. Hard to believe this is the same guy who commits first degree murder for a paycheck. Then again, she supposes he’d say the same of her.
Chouko lets him guide her to the couch, gripping his arm as she hobbles across the floor. It feels pathetic, but at least he isn’t treating her like some fragile thing about to break. It’s enough of a hit to her pride already, allowing him to see her like this. She’s about to summon a dumb joke or witty one liner when his question almost makes her topple over. ‘Are you okay Chouko?’
“I could ask the same of you. You don’t look like you’ve slept well in days…” She skilfully dodges the question, sitting down on the couch with a soft thump. She leans on him, head resting on his shoulder as she stares down at her lap.
Honesty was never his strong suit. Once again, he finds himself weakened as he hesitates upon his feelings. Does he tell her of near sleepless nights worried about his teammates, or should he bury the thoughts with excuses? It isn’t as if he hasn’t found himself awake against his will before.
“I asked you first!” Childish, but he’d rather avoid the question. Still, that very tiredness she questions catches up to him as he squints, stifling a perfectly timed yawn. “I sleep amazingly. I’m always an early sleeper, an early riser.”
His unsatisfactory response is enough for even a child to see through. Knowing this, he can only think of what she might say if he’d given a better response. Reprimand him? He was most certainly deserving of such. Laughing, he can only admit to her, “but… a hypocrite like you shouldn’t be one to judge. So aren’t we both in some shit now?”
Tired hands wander aimless till they come to her cheeks again, hands warm against her skin. “Came here cause I didn’t want to be alone like this.”

Random Starters Feel free to change pronouns/wording! “You’re looking awfully happy today, who did you kill?” “I almost came to your house drunk at 3am yesterday, you can thank me I didn’t.” “Is knocking a thing of the past? Last I checked, you don’t just let yourself in.” “I don’t hate you, that requires even a shred of care.” “You look all dressed up, meeting someone important?” “If you come near me again, I’ll make sure it’s your final defiance.” “Get out. Just get out.” “Fuck you.” “Do you know how far I had to run to get here? You owe me an explanation.” “Well, aren’t we friendly?” “Lay off it, will you?” “I don’t have to explain myself to you, or anyone. Now leave.” “I’m uh- kind of bleeding over here, mind helping me?” “Did you honestly think I wouldn’t find out?” “I didn’t know you cared for her/him/them so much.” “Stop, you’re making everything worse.” “I wouldn’t be laughing so hard if you didn’t make a right fool of yourself.” “And there you go again, lying.” “I didn’t think I’d see you here.” “Calm down, I’m not here to hurt you.” “I love her/him/them. I’m sorry.” “How about you fuck off?” “Can we… forget I said that?” “Why would you say that?” “Did you think it would all just work out? Did you think I’d be all forgiving? Well I’m not, and I think deep down you knew that.” “Fine, just throw me away, like you did all the others before me.” “All right, own up. Who touched my chocolate.” “Do you think this is stupid? Never mind, you always see the negative.” “Put that down before you hurt yourself.” “Get on with it then.” “You look nervous.” “Did you hurt him/her/them?”
