What do you think Katniss and Peeta would name their kids?
apologies for the convoluted answer im about to give to a simple question but I think about this VERY often and I am incapable of being concise ever
short answer—I’m super basic unfortunately bc I thought the names willow and rye were canon when I first joined the fandom and so now I’m attached to them buuuttt I do really think they are fitting, especially willow
under the cut is the long answer whoopsie
I’m really obsessed with naming conventions in the hunger games (like the covey, or most tributes having names that relate to their district’s industry, and ofc peeta being named after bread, which relates to his family’s trade as bakers). I especially love how Katniss’s family all have plant names, and I am really partial to the idea she carries on the tradition when naming at least one of her children. I think Willow is perfect for multiple reasons, one obviously being that it’s a plant, but then there’s also the connection to “deep in the meadow, under the willow”. I also think that it could be a subtle nod to covey naming conventions—i have a niche interest in old folk songs, especially from Appalachia and the Great Depression era, so I recognized a lot of the songs that appeared in the books. Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow is one of my favorite songs and I thought it would be so cute if Katniss named her daughter for it
However I have a more complicated relationship with their son’s name bc truth be told I actually don’t like Rye that much lol. I stuck with it before SOTR came out bc I thought it would be cute to carry on the naming conventions from Peeta’s family. Obviously peeta’s brothers are never named, so most people in like fanfic and stuff come up with bread related names for them (some of which are really ridiculous btw lmao like are we fr) and I used to be on this bandwagon too but after finding out peeta’s dad is named Otho??? Idk if I really believe all of his kids have bluntly obvious bakery themed names, and thus I don’t know if there really is an established naming convention among the Mellarks. So while I think Rye is cute, I do not believe in my heart that is their son’s name. but I haven’t really ever been able to think of an alternative!!
additionally, while I haven’t spent much time thinking about different names for their kids, I have spent loads thinking about what their kids would be like. One day I was super bored and spent hours drawing out a family tree of katniss and peeta’s descendants for the next 2 generations including all of their personalities, appearances, and general life trajectory, and full names, so embarrassing enough i have a very elaborate internal world of what kind of lives the toast babies lead (this was also because I like to imagine what a post-war district 12 would be like and how kids could grow up to live freer lives). But in a nutshell, my personal hc (because of that one line where Katniss calls her the “dancing girl”) is that katniss’s daughter revives the covey lifestyle!! I think she would give her own kids covey names which I have all written down (omg this took hours trying to find names and colors that sounded good together but it was also fun bc I was able to draw names from ballads I knew). I think willow would be basically a mini peeta with katniss’s fire when provoked, but also have a performing nature she gets from her distant covey cousins.
On the flip side!! I think their son would take after katniss, real outdoorsy quiet type. Which I think is also a reason I kinda like the name rye, because for some reason I sometimes appreciate the dichotomy when characters have a name that is the complete opposite from the type of person they grow up to be. “Oh the baker’s son was named after a type of bread, but he has absolutely zero interest in the bakery, that’s funny”. But again, I don’t really have that much preference for what their son is named, I think there could be some really cute plant names out there!! Fletcher is another popular one but I feel like it’s a little on the nose for Katniss lol

Yes!!! I’ve always wondered about the other hunters of 12
In Catching Fire, katniss says that when gale’s dad died, “even then, he [gale] was a skilled trapper” already. This implies gale had experience hunting in the woods even before meeting katniss or his father’s death. He was only fourteen, I wonder how did he learn? Did his own father teach him, like katniss’s? Was his dad a hunter?
Katniss never really runs across anyone else in the woods and her POV generally makes it seem as though the woods are solitary to only her and gal despite that “the few of us” comment. But if you really look at it, a lot more people probably enter the woods than it seems. (SUNRISE ON THE REAPING SPOILERS UNDER CUT!!!)
in sotr we see such casual existence of people beyond the fence. Burdock takes Haymitch to the woods several times, theyve skinny dipped, and I’d assume that he has probably taken other close friends there too. Haymitch doesn’t really exhibit or express much fear in these moments, even as a young child. Hattie has her whole bootlegging business stationed in the woods. Lenore Dove is chilling out in the trees as a kid (ofc, she’s covey and thus probably most likely to ignore the fence regardless lol). Also, Haymitch says that “the Everdeens are hunters”, implying there are more hunters than just Burdock!! How did he learn? Has the skill been passed down in his family? Are there other Everdeen hunters out there?
I think I just wish Katniss wasn’t such a recluse socially and we actually got more insight into how other kids view the woods lol bc it seems like it was a lot more carefree in sotr. I find it hard to believe there aren’t more rebellious groups of friends traipsing under the fence out of curiosity. Then again, it is also possible that the fear mongering surrounding the woods may have been amped up between Haymitch’s time and Katniss’s
Katniss and Gale aren’t the only ones who hunt in District 12.
Katniss says that most people aren’t brave enough to go into the woods with only a knife. And some people cross the fence to pick apples.
But Katniss explicitly states “Most of the Peacekeepers turn a blind eye to the few of us who hunt because they’re as hungry for fresh meat as anybody is”.
Meaning more than her and Gale. They might not being as successful as them but other people do in fact hunt/ gather too.
It’s a small detail but an important one.
It’s speaks the defiant and resilient nature of District 12, people who are pushed so far to the brink of death.
When bent the people of District 12 don’t break they snap back.

im reeeally hoping that the sunrise on the reaping movie’s visual design will build off of the whole retro-futurism styling of the TBOSAS movie and have a 70s or 80s flair in the costuming bc how sick would that be

I completely agree that you don’t need a reason to not want kids and caring about kids does not automatically mean you want to become a mother. I dislike when women in fiction who express no desire for children have them anyway because of the idea that it’s a natural next step in a woman’s life. However, a very important part of Katniss’s arc is that the reason she does not want to have kids is because of the hunger games (and yes, as you mention, various other struggles), and the resolution of the story being her having children is indicative of how she feels that Panem is finally safe to raise a child in. Suzanne Collins wrote Katniss’s motherhood for a reason. Yes, she still is terrified. That would be near impossible to offset after such deeply ingrained trauma. But I also think that’s a very common fear for mothers and it can coexist with still wanting to have them. The difference now is that the fears Katniss has can be faced with love, and aren’t a matter of a nationwide machine out to kill you that cannot be fought. I love that it took Katniss 15 years to have kids because it shows that it was deliberate, and healing is an incredibly slow journey. Not every woman who likes kids wants kids, but Katniss specifically, I think, was written with her eventual future in mind. Maybe it’s a misinterpretation, but I believe that the setup of her declaration of not having kids in the first chapter, coupled with her care for children throughout the series, is meant to communicate to the reader that in another world, her outlook would be different. Katniss fights to make the world safe for children, and ending it with her having her own shows how she, too, believes that.
have katniss everdeen on the mind so. little rant.
The grossest mischaracterization I’ve seen in fanfics is the idea that Katniss hates kids and that’s why she never wanted to have any. If you think that is the case, you have WILDLY misinterpreted the entire reason why katniss foreswears having children throughout the trilogy. It’s the complete opposite; she loves kids so much that she couldn’t bear them suffering the inevitable pain that comes from living in Panem. She would rather not have children at all than have them be subjected to that. Throughout the series she consistently shows deep care and love for children (prim, rue) and that is such an integral part of her character. She is inherently maternal and she knows that’s one of her weaknesses. I’ve seen fics where katniss looks at a kid and thinks “wow what a brat kids are so smelly I never want to have any” and others where she’s pregnant and is thinking “im only really having this child for Peeta, I don’t even know if I’ll be capable of loving it as much”, just so that they can eventually have a scene where she gives birth and is like “omg I love this child so much wow I was so wrong to not want kids!”. NO!! YOU READ THE BOOKS WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED!!!
