Explosions. Gunfire. Bullets ricocheting off of armor and other surfaces. The sounds were so distant, almost as though they were from an old memory that was beginning to fade. There was tons of noise and then nothing--just the sound of his heart beating loudly in his ears. Voices overlapped, sounding like they were right over his head, but he couldn't make anything out. They sounded like garbled radio transmissions. He tried to talk back to the voices, but what came from his mouth was just raspy, weak breathing. What happened? Am I dying? Was that Shepard? How is she alive?
Suddenly, Garrus was awake, the ceiling of the med bay being the first thing that he saw. He realized almost immediately that he wasn't on Omega anymore, but he wasn't entirely sure where he even was. The images that had played like a damaged video in his brain must have just been bad dreams. That's what this was, right? It was all a bad dream. No--this med bay looked like it was on a ship. What ship was he on? The battle-worn turian turned his head and saw a familiar face, Dr. Chakwas. She had a datapad in her hand and didn't notice him right away.
"You're awake," she said, her voice lifting as if she were surprised that he was conscious at all. She lowered the datapad and smiled, and he noticed that she had a familiar looking logo on her clothes. Is that Cerberus?
"Where am I? What ship is this?" Garrus started to sit up from the bed, causing the doctor to run over and put her hands on his shoulders to try and push him back down. "It's the Normandy," Chakwas replied with a groan as she tried--and failed--to get Garrus back into a horizontal position. "You're not ready," she added as she stepped back and folded her arms over her chest. Garrus had heard all that he needed to hear and didn't hesitate to slide off of the bed and head over to the pile of his armor that sat in the corner of the room. "What do you think you're doing, Vakarian?"
Garrus threw his armor on as quickly as he possibly could, ignoring the doctor completely. She continued to protest him being up and about, but he continued to not listen. She said one last thing to him as he left the med bay, but he didn't hear it. Instead, his focus was navigating this ship to find Shepard. If this was real and she was alive, he had to see her with his own eyes. He never believed she was truly dead, no matter what anyone else said. Until the Alliance could produce her body, she was going to be MIA to him indefinitely.
He rushed through the hallways, realizing that this ship was slightly different from what he had served on before, and he wondered if this was the original Normandy or some sort of new one. Either way, he didn't care and he didn't think about it much. He just needed to find her.
Finally, he heard voices on the other side of a door and walked right in. As it hissed open, he could see a human with a Cerberus logo on his outfit, and for a moment his brow plates shifted in concern. What did Cerberus have to do with this? Was this a Cerberus ship? And then Shepard came into view and he knew everything was going to be alright. Cerberus could be involved and he honestly didn't care at this point. Shepard was either somehow alive or he had died on Omega and this was all just a dream. Either way, he was elated to see a familiar face and immediately started blabbing about his face, not even noticing that the other person in the room had taken leave.
"Hot scars?" he questioned. "Last time I checked, you're not a Krogan." Again, he laughed softly and again the bandage on his face pulled over his fresh wounds in a painful way, but that wasn't going to stop him from talking. "Unless you're referring to the intense burning that only seems to be getting worse." Both shoulders lifted slowly into a shrug as he considered what she had said regarding what had happened on Omega. "Me?" He met her gaze when she approached and resisted the urge to smile at her words. "Remind me...who was it who died a few years ago?" he jested. "Pretty sure that was you, Shepard. Heard you got spaced."
on a ship full of unfamiliar faces and only a handful of people she could trust, kora felt lost. afloat. drifting. the silence of open space suffocating her, ice cutting her lungs as she flails, unmoving. breath caught in her throat, she gasped for air, doubling over the table in the comm room. this ship - the normandy, rebuilt, just like her - was suffocating, leaving her nowhere to hide. even her quarters felt wrong, off. she spent far too long searching it for bugs and came up empty aside from the ever present v.i. named edi she still wasn't convinced wasn't watching her every move. but really, was there anywhere that would feel right when she didn't even feel like herself?
piercing blue eyes, unfocused, fading... kora pulled herself upright, laying her hand on her throat as she took deep breathes. garrus saw her. after two years of having been dead, garrus vakarian took one look at her and didn't question a thing. she was still commander kora shepard. pieced back together with old parts and new but still her.
and now he was being pieced back together again.
kora barely registered jacob entering the room until his third attempt at calling her echoed distantly. she listened to the update on garrus, and while she was worried about the long-term effects, the fact that he was alive took all the tension from her body. her friend was alive; she was alive; they were alive.
and then the idiot waltzes right in like half his face hadn't just been reconstructed, and shepard wanted to punch it. the good side, of course. she couldn't help but laugh, her smile hurting her cheeks. ❝no worse than usual, buddy,❞ she teased, rolling her eyes at him, elated to see he hadn't changed a bit. he was laughing, joking, walking around like he hadn't just been on the verge of death. she shook her head, still smiling, and distantly noticed jacob leaving. for the first time since waking up from the dead, kora felt at ease. one of her most trusted companions was here, and she knew he would have her back, no matter what. and should things fall to the wayside, she was confident she, garrus and chakwas could hold their own while dragging joker out of there.
❝fit for duty?❞ she barked out a laugh, crossing her arms over her chest. ❝you and your hot scars are on medical rest until chakwas clears you.❞ and before he could argue, she stabbed at his armor with a finger, looking up at him sternly. ❝and don't you ever scare me like that again.❞

The cot in the main battery made a terrible scraping sounds as the legs shifted on the floor while Garrus tossed and turned. It had only been a few days since he had been extracted from Omega, and he had been plagued with physical pain and non-stop nightmares every day since. When he would close his eyes to attempt to get any rest, he would see their faces and their lifeless bodies. The images of his Omega team that had been slaughtered were burned into his memory. If he actually did manage to fall asleep, he would just relive the day, though the end was a blur, likely because he was incapacitated and near death. He remembered the loud boom of the explosive going off so close to him and then nothing, just black nothingness with disembodied voices that he couldn't make out.
If it wasn't the bad dreams, it was the never-ending burning he felt all along the right side of his face. Chakwas had been changing the dressing on his wound every day, and every day it only seemed to be more and more painful as the ends of the damaged nerves were exposed to oxygen. The doctor had offered him analgesics, but he refused it, believing that the uncomfortable sensation was something he should just accept as punishment. Punishment for what? It wasn't his fault that his team was murdered. Sidonis had told him of a potential lead and he naturally had to check it out. How was he supposed to know what was going to happen? Where was Sidonis, anyway? Was he even still alive?
Right when his nightmare reached the point of the gunship firing a rocket directly into his face, Garrus jolted upright and woke up, breathing heavily as he wiped the sweat that had formed on his brow plates. He turned to sit on the edge of the bed as he tried to catch his breath, his heart pounding in his chest and his pulse racing. Was he doomed to relive this day for the rest of his life? The turian sighed and dropped his head as he considered that he might never recover from what happened on Omega. The searing pain in his face would likely subside eventually, but the memory of what happened that day would likely never go away, he figured.
Exhausted, he decided to leave the main battery and head out to the mess and get some water to cool off. It was late and everyone should be in the crew quarters sleeping, leaving the mess empty and quiet. He wasn't even sure what time it was, but he didn't really care, since everything felt like it was moving incredibly slow since he had gotten back. He grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge before taking a seat at the nearest table, but he didn't immediately drink. His mind was running a mile a minute, filled with "what if" and other questions that he didn't have the answer to.
Before he could dwell on the unanswered questions for too long, soft footfalls could be heard nearby, and he glanced out of the corner of his eye to try to see who was entering the room. For a moment, he considered leaving before anyone could ask him why he was awake or what he was doing, but he thought that maybe the company wouldn't be bad. He winced softly in pain from the pull of the bandage on his face when he turned to the face the area the footsteps were coming from.
"Hello?" his voice was hushed, just in case.

"The bad crowd?" What she didn't know was that he found her to be interesting and intriguing, her unwillingness to become friends with him or anyone else on the squad something that he wanted to know more about. He had read the very limited information in her dossier, which barely touched on her powerful biotic abilities, her appearance, and her history. It was this kind of mystery that he liked. He had been an investigator before, after all, so he had to study people to try and determine their motives and their next moves. Jack was an enigma to him, but he knew that expressing that to her might make her feel like he viewed her as a lab rat or something, so he kept those thoughts to himself.
He was surprised that she elected to talk about herself at all, since she was usually very illusive and kept to herself. It was clear from the marks on her body that she had experienced a lot of trauma, and her words only confirmed that. The turian had to assume she was telling the truth, though, he found it odd that she was telling him anything about her past at all. Even Shepard knew very little, despite many attempts to get more than a groan or dismissive gesture out of Jack. Why was she talking to him now?
Garrus eyed his drink for a moment, slowly tilting the glass back and forth, the liquid within shifting from one side to the other. It had been a while since he drank, and he didn't want to rush it and make a fool of himself. He wondered if Jack could hold her liquor well. Her comment regarding turian skulls made him think that maybe she had a lower tolerance than he expected. Either that, or she was actually being honest. Again, very intriguing at the least.
"You think that's the worst thing I've ever heard?" he asked as he quickly downed the remainder of his alcohol. "I might not have been imprisoned like you have, but I've seen things. Heard things." Before he continued, he waved at the bartender and gestured for a refill of his drink. "You see a lot of dead people when you're a cop," he added. "Sometimes just bits and pieces of what was once a person. After a while, you get desensitized." His refill was poured right as he ended his sentence, and he chose to take a sip before making one last remark.
"Turian skulls are what do it for you, huh? Human skulls make better drinking vessels, you know. They're, uh..." his voice trailed off as he made a gesture that was supposed to show a concave shape. "Round." Who was messing with who here?
Jack didn't waste a second, instantly taking a generous sip of her drink as soon as it was served. A burning sensation rushed down her throat, cool first, then settling into a heat and leaving a fresh aftertaste in her mouth. She missed the feeling. It was almost addictive. A huff of laughter escaped Jack's dark-painted lips as she turned to face the alien. "No shit." But frankly, she didn't mind that he was terrible at small talk. She'd rather not have anyone try to engage in small talk with her because she was more than terrible - she was unwilling. That's why she kept to herself, ate her meals in her dark little corner rather than in the mess hall. She never saw a point in socializing with others. Not when it always ended the same way. People got disappointed, thought she had too many issues, distanced themselves or outright left. That was the best case scenario, if they weren't the kind to decide to stab her in the back for some credits.
"No fucking point in small talk." She agreed, taking another sip.. and a second.
For some reason, though, she was doing it again. Talking to someone. Talking to someone whose intentions she didn't even fucking know. He's Shepard's friend. Probably just some person who actually has fun talking to people and getting to know his squadmates. That's what a part of her thought. And she couldn't blame him for it, could she? And maybe this wouldn't be so bad. She was.. lonely bored out of her mind. Hasn't been able to do anything remotely resembling fun with her time in ages, since there hadn't been much to do on that prison ship other than scrubbing the floors. And then, she'd been put to sleep for weeks after wiping the floor with them. The briefest thought of it was quickly put to sleep, too, with Jack chugging down the rest of her brandy in one go.
She didn't need to be his friend. But maybe this could be entertaining. There was something about him that puzzled her, though. Something Jack couldn't left unsolved.
"You hanging out with the bad crowd now?" she raised a brow. "I wouldn't have expected you to wanna go drinking with me." She confessed. She had expected him to look down on her in every way possible. His species tended to be civilized, dignified, dutiful.. tended to value those things above anything else. Didn't mesh well with her. Even the ones who were anything but civilized, she found to have an attitude of superiority. Especially those. The fucking Warden. Every prison guard. She hoped Vakarian wasn't like that.
She remembered his earlier words. That he didn't know anything about her at all. Maybe that was why he was here.
"Guess no one has told you. I'll give you a summary. I killed people - a bunch of people. Engaged in some piracy on the side. Kidnapping. Burned down a ton of shit. Been in some prisons, broke out of all of them. Assaulted people. Stole shit.."
There was a pause before she added, "and sometimes I'm all for serial killing, and collecting the skulls of my turian victims after."
That was a lie. But she said it with a straight face, not an ounce of humor written on her features. Maybe the alcohol was kicking in - or maybe she was really just bored enough to wanna mess with him. See if the former detective would buy it, see through it, or piss his pants.

Garrus tracked Shepard's movements throughout the mess, and he found himself trying to figure out her next move. If he were being honest, that was always what he was doing. Though he rarely expressed that it interested him, he actually enjoyed people-watching. Years being a C-Sec officer meant that he had spent a lot of time watching people, analyzing them and their body language, listening to their words and the tone they used when they spoke, any gestures they made, all to try and anticipate what their next move would be and if they were dangerous or had malicious intent.
Shepard obviously wasn't up to anything, and the turian realized rather quickly that she was just making herself something to drink. Her remark caught him off guard, causing him to nearly choke on his soda as he took another sip. After a few moments of coughing, he let out a soft laugh which was accentuated by his sub-vocals. He cleared his throat before he offered a reply. "Is that because you don't think I can actually do it, or are you just curious as to what would happen if I did it?" Surely she was just messing with him, he assumed. He was totally serious when he said that he could pick up the lieutenant with ease.
Tumblr media
"Want to come back down there with me and tell him to let me pick him up?" Garrus chuckled lightly as he considered what he was going to say next. "Maybe if you, uh, make it an order he'll do it." It was a good idea, he thought. There's no way James would say no to a direct order from Shepard...right? He stood from his seat to toss his empty drink can into the trash can before he approached Shepard. He shifted his weight and crossed both arms over his chest as he stood next to her. "You don't think I can do it, do you?" he asked, one hand slipping out from under his arm to gesture as he spoke. "I told you, I can lift twice his weight, no problem." There was no bluff to be called, but still, he thought that she doubted his strength. If he needed to prove it, he would.

TODAY WAS ONE OF THOSE DAYS SHEPARD WAS FEELING IT ━ what? everything. literally everything. the aches. the pains. TRAUMA THAT TICKLES EVERY SINGLE FIBER OF HER BEING LIKE A RELENTLESS FEATHER . and sometimes that's physically obvious in the way she looks up at another crewmember with her head half lowered , green eyes peeking out from underneath a head of hair she doesn't care to tame.
[ ... ] but from the very top of her heart , garrus just chattering about a conversation with james is the most normal thing. AND IT'S MOMENTS LIKE THESE THAT MAKE EVERYTHING FEEL WORTH IT . these people are her family. shepard is listening , she just would like some coffee. or like , coffee with some alcohol. THE COFFEE IS STARTED . there is this long and awkward pause after opening and closing quite a few cupboards before she realizes the alcohol is kept elsewhere.
Tumblr media
NOW SHEPARD IS JUST STANDING THERE WITH HER HANDS ON HER HIPS . because she was going through it a little but not enough to just brush garrus off , even though half her thought process was : DO WE EVEN HAVE WHISKEY ? she does turn during near the end of that conversation. an eyebrow pricking up in curiosity. ATTENTION SOLD , GARRUS .
" i want to see you pick him up. "

As Shepard entered the mess, Garrus looked up from his dextro soda right at her and decided that she needed to know about an argument he had just gotten into with one of the other squad members. He had been down in the cargo bay where Vega was and the pair had gotten into about weightlifting, of all things. It had all started when the scarred turian saw the rather muscular James doing pull-ups. At first, he just watched in silence. After a moment, he shook his head lightly, causing the lieutenant to lower himself back down to the ground to ask him what he was looking at. From there the argument began. Shepard hadn't been there to personally witness the spat, so Garrus decided he would tell her about it before James got to her first.
"I don't care what James says," Garrus began. "He knows I'm stronger than him, he just doesn't want to admit it." He leaned back in his chair a little before continuing. "I might have skinny arms and legs, but I can bench more than you would think." He honestly couldn't tell if she was even listening to him at this point, but he decided to keep talking anyways. "It's not the size of the muscles, it's how you use them. He thinks that just because he's got massive biceps that he's stronger than me." He took another sip of his drink. "Wouldn't let me prove that I'm stronger."
Tumblr media
The more he explained what had happened, the sillier it sounded, but he knew that if he didn't tell Shepard what really happened, the lieutenant would totally exaggerate the whole thing to try and make himself look better. At least, that's what Garrus assumed he would do. Humans seemed to enjoy taking things out of context or blowing them out of proportion, but they also seemed to like to downplay the severity of important things. They were a weird species compared to turians, who had an almost unshakeable drive to be loyal and honest at all times. Well, Saren was the exception. Most turians were honest to a fault.
"I said, 'if you think I'm so weak, let me pick you up, James.'" Garrus sighed. "What he doesn't know is that I can lift twice his weight, easy." The former Archangel raised up his shoulders in a light shrug. "Really, I don't think he wanted to be embarrassed in front of the rest of the people in the cargo bay." He stopped again, this time waiting to see what Shepard might have to say about all of this. He had gone over the most important details and laid out the facts, which was what was important. He wasn't about to let some man with overinflated biceps and an overinflated ego tell him what was what.

"Bed time! Let's go!"
Garrus was sitting alone in the mess hall, enjoying the silence when he heard Kelly's voice. He knew it was past what was technically "bed time" for the ship, but he wasn't eager to hit the sack quite yet. He had been thinking about a lot of different things as he sat in the empty room. He thought about Sidonis, Saren, the geth, the collectors... His mind was running a mile a minute with "what if" and coulds and shoulds. Chamber's voice cut through a rather deep thought he was having, but it still took him a moment to fully process what she said and respond.
"Yeah," he began as he leaned back to stretch a little. He had been in that chair longer than he thought and was starting to get a little uncomfortable. "I'm heading that way," he continued. Though he said he was leaving, he didn't get up from where he was seated. Instead, he took a deep breath, his head lowering as he exhaled. "I've just got a lot on my mind," he added. "Give me five minutes and I'll go. Don't worry about me."

"Wait," Garrus began as him and Shepard approached the stadium. A giant Blasto Live sign was displayed on all of the screens at the entrance, and Garrus was less than excited to be at this show. "We're here to see Blasto Live?" he questioned as he stopped dead in his tracks just before the entrance. "I thought you said we were doing something fun?"
"This is fun," Shepard replied as she gently tugged on his arm. "Besides, no one is going to expect us to be here, so we can do whatever we want." By that, she meant that they didn't have to conceal their relationship while they were here. The issue was that the Alliance had rules against fraternization, especially between a CO and her subordinate. Knowing that, they would steal little moments of intimacy when no one else was looking. A gentle but quick kiss or a light caress was the most they usually did when no one was watching. Anything else risked the crew catching on to their relationship. Shepard and Garrus both doubted that anyone would tattle, but still, it wasn't worth being reprimanded.
Shepard smiled as she once again pulled on Garrus's arm, this time with a more intentional pull, dragging him into the stadium.
This event drew pretty large crowds, and Shepard figured they could hide amongst other people and not be noticed. As far as she knew, no one from the squad was here, and neither were any higher ups who might see something she didn't want them to see. This would give them a chance to be more affectionate than they usually were, and she looked forward to it.
Their seats were somewhat high up in the stadium, people packed closely together around them. There appeared to be a lot of other couples, but not a lot of humans with turians. Still, Shepard continued to their seats with a soft grin on her face. Once they made it to their destination, she turned to face Garrus, her smile widening.
"See?" she began. "No one will know we're here. Trust me." With that, she got up onto the tips of her toes to press her lips to his mouth. Kissing a turian was different than a human, but she was used to it at this point and had no complaints.
The show began with a loud musical introduction, the crowd cheering loudly as they waited for Blasto to come out. After the loud fanfare, he came out, one tentacle waving at the guests as he approached the marker on the stage. He started some sort of intro, but Shepard wasn't paying attention. Instead, she put her back to Garrus and grabbed his arms to wrap around her waist. She could feel his anxiety and hesitation to be touching her as much as he was in a public place, but after a moment that anxiety faded. He figured he might as well enjoy this while he could. Being close to her in public like this gave him a rush. It was knowing that he was doing something he shouldn't be doing. It was thrilling, to say the least.
After the intro, the show began. Blasto grabbed several large weapons and started some sort of monologue about being a hanar Spectre. It was interesting but also kind of strange to see him live. Shepard had watched a few of his movies, but thought they were mostly kind of silly. A hanar Spectre? That's got to be as strange as a human Spectre, Shepard supposed.
Blasto reenacted a scene from Blasto 6, complete with other cast members from the film reciting their famous lines. The crowd roared with excitement as it continued, only getting quiet as Blasto left the stage for an intermission. Garrus hadn't been paying much attention to the show, more focused on gently nuzzling Shepard's neck as he continued to hold her in an embrace. Just then, a romantic song started playing and the Jumbotron screens came on. The camera operator started focusing on couples, with the words "Kiss Cam" on the bottom of the screen. When it panned to a couple, they would laugh and kiss to entertain the crowd. Neither Shepard or Garrus was watching where the kiss cam was going, until suddenly they appeared on the screens.
The moment Shepard realized the camera was focused on them, she gasped and quickly broke away from Garrus, both hands shooting up to cover her face as she shied away from the camera. Garrus stumbled backwards, almost falling into the people who were standing behind him. This was not good. Their secret relationship was suddenly not so secret anymore. The crowd laughed, the camera operator saying something about Shepard and Garrus's reaction to being recorded, but the pair wasn't listening.
"What just happened?" the turian asked nervously. "I thought you said we would be safe here," he continued. Shepard began to walk away from their seats and into the stairwell, gesturing for him to follow her. "What do we do now?" The turian formerly known as Archangel writhed his hands together as he waited for Shepard to face him.
She turned around once they were deep into the stairwell, and Garrus noticed how flushed her cheeks were, but didn't comment on it. "Yeah, well, I didn't know they were going to point a camera right at us," Shepard said. She let out a long sigh as she considered what they should do next. "I think we're good as long as that wasn't broadcasted anywhere." Her heart was racing, worried that she was going to get a message any minute about her inappropriate behavior with Garrus. "I think we should go," she added. With that, she made her way down the stairs, head down as she pondered what the consequences of this event were going to be. Would she be reprimanded? Would Garrus? Would he be removed from her ship? Only time would tell.
coldplay affair shakarian au where they're hiding their relationship from the alliance but are exposed making out on the jumbotron during blasto live! is this anything

Lack Of Sleep Starters
"You can barely stand!"
"When was the last time you slept?"
"You look like shit."
"What? Sorry, I'm a bit tired."
"I haven't been sleeping well."
"Come on, let's get you to bed."
"What did I tell you about pulling all-nighters?"
"You can't even keep your eyes open!"
"If I lay with you, will you finally go to sleep?"
"Okay, no more coffee."
"Bed time! Let's go!"
"My brain won't shut off."
"Huh? Oh! I'm awake!"
"I promise that I'm fine! It's only been a few nights!"
"I promise I'll sleep when I finish."
"Did you stay up all night?"
"I don't need sleep."
"Sleep is for the weak."
"Don't worry! Last time, I didn't sleep for a whole week! This is nothing!"
"I can't go to sleep."
"This is more important than sleep."
