I was reading this story about one of the original selkie. The story follows a young female selkie who, upon being spotted near the shore without her hide, is kidnapped by a human. She's wed to him and they eventually have children. He's keeping her prisoner by keeping her hide locked away, but every day she yearned to return to the sea. One day, she gets access to the locked room, takes her skin, and immediately returns to the ocean, never to be seen again by her family.

I was discussing this story with some friends and some of them mentioned the fact that she was a terrible mother for abandoning her children who were innocent and did not deserve what they got.

I noticed that in the story, they use language such as "she was wed to him" and "they had children" instead of "he kidnapped and raped her".

I find it both fascinating and terrifying how specific literary choices can soften the insidiousness of any story. It's particularly evident in older stories, where it follows the main plot, but if you focus on the implications for (usually) the women of the story, it's essentially a nightmare.

A story about a king conquering lands for his queen doesn't mention the violence it required, the men, women, and children that were assaulted and slaughtered by the soldiers.

A story about a womanizing character who can't seem to stop screwing around doesn't mention the litany of women he impregnated and then abandoned.

A story about a man 'finding himself' after recovering from anger issues/alcoholism doesn't mention the emotional torture that his wife and children had to suffer living with him.

Women have always been in the shadows, tertiary characters who do not speak, do not feel. They are nothing but stepping stones for the heroes of the story to flourish. And the way some stories are written will have you believing that is exactly where they should be.
