Artist statement; Robert Livingstone
Media: plaster , lamp, lampshade, printed paper, pencil
This work explores colonial thinking countered by a response of colonised people. Similar stereotypes are used in modern context today. My work aims to challenge divisional thinking on race and culture. Asking viewers to consider what's in the media objectively.

I have used this lampshade and A4 printed paper with PVA glue to make this part of my work. I painted the pome of the Blackmans Burdon by Hubert Howson in a magnolia colour to give it the appearance of a sepia tonal colour to reflect its age ,This idea came from an old news paper that had taken on the colour due to the aging process. I am being considerate to the reaction of the ink in the printed on paper, I have done a few test samples using glue to ensure the ink wont bleed when wet. I applied the glue sparingly to avoid ink bleeds. The Rudyard Kipling poem Whiteman's Burdon I painted white. Which gives the symbolic reference of purity and godliness which the author presumes in his work.

The mould of my hand is made using alginate. I chose a narrow container to save on material during this part of the process it worked out well it was a fairly straight forward part of the process.
The plaster cast pouring had limited success. I do not think I had the mixing ratios correct when making the plaster. I was impatient, concerned the plaster was too thin. I added plaster liberally. I did not follow the process I had learned in college properly. The plaster set too quickly. It was too thick to pour into the mould. More of a doughy consistency than a poured liquid I pushed hardening plaster into the mould packing it in with my fingers.
I found it difficult to work out the volume of my hand in the container this made it difficult to work out how much plaster to use in the first place. this didn't help ! More consideration to volume of material and timing in the process should be considered in future. i should have disposed of the plaster and started again.
I was aware before making the hand cast that flaws may occur in the plaster. I thought this would lend to the narrative of the authors flawed thinking. With a juxta position from the assume purity of the whiteness of the author. The hand has turned out more flawed than expected, which i quite like. It adds to the narrative of flawed thinking in the author effectively.

Rudyard Kipling ,The White Mans Burden 1899 Poem was sourced through research from Critical Practice class on Post Colonial studies. I find it very relevant to the attitudes of the colonialists. What i really find relevant is this was written in 1807, 92 years after the abolition of slavery, showing a continuation of racial prejudice and narrow minded attitudes that still exist in some people today. This poem was published in the London Times 1899.

The Black man’s Burden
(a reply to Rudyard Kipling)
By Hubert Harrison .
i have discovered the Black mans Burdon by doing further online research into Kipling's pome. I think it is an excellent response to Kipling's poem it gives a conflicting view through the gaze of the colonised people. having these two poems together shows the juxta position that is important to my work.

Creative ideas and thinking on chosen topic.
For my creative project i have chose postcolonialism as an area of research on which to base my work and final outcome. The form of my work will be a 3D piece of work. Using plaster casts of my hand, printed paper, glue, paint, reproposed lamp and paint. The cast of hand will either be in the shape of a writing hand, or palms facing upwards making an offering of the crated narrative of the text in print. i am going to create this piece of work exploring postcolonialism and how its s used to manipulate truth.
Artists i will be looking at for reference. Peter Kennards photomontage work. For the 3d element of my work Rachel Whiteread and her use of plaster casting. For contextual narrative i will be looking at material from Critical Practices content we have studied in college.
The work below was created for a previous project in Critical Practices looking at how the media choose to manipulate text to cause fear and alarm or just lie. It was the beginning of my thinking process that led me to look at the Kipling poem that was Printed in The London times. The hand made from a plastic milk bottle, paint and printed paper was made to have the appearance of being infected by the print.
