Hate to say it, but its likely Iizuka might be lying… again.
Sonic Prime to be released in Fall of 2022, says Takashi Iizuka
Tumblr media
In an interview with Famitsu, famous Japanese gaming magazine, Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio’s Creative Officer, gave some more details in regard to Sonic’s future, and what fans can expect.
The biggest takeaway revealed by Iizuka is that Sonic Prime, the upcoming Netflix Sonic cartoon, will be released worldwide on Fall 2022, before or around the release of Sonic Frontiers, the upcoming mainline game.
“In the spring, we are planning to release the highly anticipated sequel to the movie, and in the fall, the new animated series Sonic Prime is going to premiere on Netflix. Please look forward to Sonic’s adventures in 2022!”

To be fair, Sonic Prime is about exploring the multiverse and there is still a chance SEGA worked things out with the other rights holders and we may see Sonic visit the universe of SatAM and/or Sonic Boom in one episode. After all, the show WILL be aimed at long-time fans too and not just newcomers.
Honestly the concept art DOES make me think of an “Into the Sonic-verse” sort of thing, at least with regards to the various Eggmen and all the references they have to past versions of Robotnik. Although as you said it’s concept art so all that may end up scrapped when we get to the actual show.
I mean there's definitely that vibe, but what I mean is that like, Spider-Verse is (mostly) a crossover between preestablished versions of Spider-Man. And some people heard "Sonic Prime has a multiverse" and immediately jumped to "oh they're gonna cross over all the different versions of Sonic from the games and comics and cartoons." But... no, they probably aren't going to do that, especially with all the different rights holders that stuff is divided between. And this concept art makes it look like they're doing what I thought, with the universes in question being new alternate timelines

Hey, I’m not bugging you.
Did you see the February 22, 2021 Bumblekast episode? It was something, especially since Ian dropped a bombshell about the idea of character development/growth in Sonic. Apparently, character change is all an illusion, probably nothing more than one of SEGA’s many lies, do you find it to be terrifying?

The two worlds thing is trash IMHO.
Squiggly called me out here we go LET’S TALK SONIC ALIENS
OK SO @squigglydigglydoo has been working on a big honking Sonic theory and I want to add to it and I’m never gonna have a good time so might as well dump out all my ideas now!
Disclaimer: this is JUST for fun– it’s a headcanon spinning off of the idea of “what if Sonic was actually an alien? What evidence do we have to support this? What would that mean for the larger canon?” I am NOT saying Sonic is an alien, just that he maybe could be, and wouldn’t that be nifty. It makes for a fun story, so enjoy the ride!

This will never be forgotten, also, who was taken by surprise when we learned that Takashi Iizuka and Sonic Team would be involved? Sure IDW Sonic is an American Sonic comic just like Archie Sonic, but is Iizuka’s involvement really necessary?

I hope SEGA stays hands-off on this and doesn’t enforce any restrictions on the crew.
New writer and more details are revealed for Sonic Prime
Tumblr media
More details related to Sonic’s next cartoon, Sonic Prime, have been revealed.
New Writers
After Netflix’s announcement about a new Sonic Cartoon, two writers have already announced their involvement in the new cartoon.
Justin Peniston has confirmed on his Twitter that he’ll be one of the writers for Sonic Prime. Among his writing credits, he has written for DC Comics’ Blue Beetle, IDW’s Eternal Descent, and Disney XD’s Avengers Assemble!
Tumblr media
Another person that also has been confirmed to write for the series is Duncan Rouleau, he has written for Batman and Superman comics in the past for DC Comics.
Tumblr media
How will Man of Action handle the series?
Duncan has given some insight into how the series will be handled. When asked about the tone of the series, he compared it to 2010’s Generator Rex.
He was also asked about crossovers with other brands, Duncan expressed that the main focus is the Sonic series laid out by SEGA, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of crossovers in the future.
Duncan was asked if the series would bring another new intepretation of the Sonic series, similar to what shows like Sonic Boom or Sonic SatAM have done, Duncan expressed that it will build on what the games’ have already estabilished:
“There already is one [Sonic Universe]. We’re just adding to it.”

Thanks for the answer.
Is it a good idea to call Shadow a Vegeta clone because of his current characterization?
Nah. While he may bear some similarities in role/archetype, beyond the superficial they are significantly different characters; consider the differences in backstory, and how their character arcs have diverged as their respective series continue over time.
Is Vegeta an inspiration for Shadow? Definitely.

And you get an A for effort, helped by the fact that SEGA seems to have started to ease up a bit on Shadow’s characterization. I’m glad you’re trying to help fix everyone’s favorite character, besides, a ton of fans are very uncomfortable with how Shadow’s been portrayed in IDW Sonic as this cold, edgy and super broody n’ stoic anti-hero instead of a dark hero with a heart of gold who cares about other people. We all wish that SEGA’s stance changes, allowing the concept of Team Dark to return, and we long for the old Shadow to come back. You and Ian have tried very hard to address the fan backlash despite Sonic Team‘s “hard restrictions”, Evan. We hope to finally see Shadow realize what he’s been doing is wrong and dials back on who he’s been, leaving room for more greater moments. I know that you‘re currently not in control of Shadow’s characterization, but it would be awesome if SEGA gave you free reign with characterizing Shadow. Thanks once again for your hard work and keep making fans happy.
How do you feel about IDW Shadow's personality? Do you see him eventually softening up like Archie Shadow did? Or is he going to be more stoic and cold?
When I’m writing for IDW, I need to stick to the way SEGA wants to see him portrayed, which places a strong emphasis on independence and stoicism. That said, within those limitations, there is still some room for deeper characterization once you accept the provided premise. That’s what I’m trying to work on now; not fighting who Shadow officially is, but working within that framework to showcase his best side whenever possible.
(If you wanna see my personal take on Shadow’s personality, read Ghosts of the Future)

I still write fanfiction.
Hey Bobby, have you ever heard/read any of the earlier pre-Archie Ian Flynn's stories, "Other M" and other? (http://www.sonicverseteam.net/comics/archives_svt/bumbleking/) Maybe that would be interesting for ya, I hope
I know it exists but I have yet to really go back and look at it since I know Ian thinks it’s total grimdark schlock. We all wrote weird stuff as teens

Um, I watched that episode of the Bumblekast and the reason I asked you for your opinion is because I felt that Ian’s answer wasn’t clear enough. I was hoping that you’d help me get a clear answer.
Hey, bro. I got a question in regards to Sonic/Mega Man Worlds Unite, especially when it comes to Sonic Boom. While we got to see Sticks interact with Modern Sonic and crew, many folks feel that Sonic meeting Boom Sonic is/was a missed opportunity. Did SEGA have a restriction stating that Sonic can’t meet his Boom self, did Ian originally plan on having Sticks bring along the rest of Team Boom Sonic until SEGA told him no?
From a recent BumbleKast:
“See, at some point I think the Boom cast might’ve been on the table for Worlds Unite? Because at some point I remember getting a note saying we couldn’t make a joke about the blue arms. We were told we could make jokes about the bandages, but we couldn’t reference the blue arms. But then later we couldn’t use anyone except for Sticks or the Boom-exclusive characters, and that’s why we didn’t see anyone else cross over. So... I don’t remember quite how that panned out.”

We know SEGA isn’t evil and the comic staff have plenty of creative freedom, its just that SEGA wants to make sure the characters and world stay true to how everything is depicted in the games.
Does anyone actually know how loose or bad are Sega's mandates for the comic? I always see people twisting them to fit their needs in arguments. "Well Ian can't do that because of the mandates", "The mandates aren't holding Ian back at all. Sega doesn't have him on a short leash" etc. Does no-one actually know for sure?
Ian hasn’t given us a full rundown of Sega’s rules because he knows this would probably get him in trouble, so we don’t really know the full extent of it. But the situation is more nuanced than either “Sega is evil” or “there are basically no mandates”
From what I’ve gathered, there are some specific subjects Sega is more strict with that have gotten in the way of things Ian’s wanted to do, most infamously with Shadow’s characterization. He also tried sneaking the Hooligans into the series by having Sonic mention them in issue #3, for instance, but this was ultimately shot down due to the current Classic/Modern divide. Most of this can easily be written off as Sega wanting to keep the worldbuilding and certain characters consistent, although some of it can be frustrating (to both us and to Ian)
But aside from specific stuff like that, Ian and Evan have a ton of creative freedom within the boundaries Sega has set, and the direction of the story is all on them. In the recent WonderCon panel Ian explained how in the first big in-person meeting with Iizuka and the Sega team they asked him to pitch the first year of stories right then and there, and he told them what he wanted to do and they approved it. They’ve also been allowed to introduce all these new characters like Tangle, Whisper, Starline, and Belle and tell new stories with them, which the Sonic Team staff have actively encouraged and even helped out with. Some details get changed along the way, as is the nature of licensed comics, but if they were being super duper strict about sticking to the games then we never would’ve gotten the Metal Virus arc

Do you find the classic-modern division stupid?
I was wondering why Ian "I put Witchcart in the Archie comics" have been holding back on introducing more classic characters in the IDW series (not that I mind because it lets him flesh out the established cast) but man, I love seeing Ian being giddy over being allowed to put in classic characters in the 30th Anniversary comic.
They aren’t currently allowed to use Classic era-exclusive characters in the main IDW series due to the current division between the Classic and Modern material. This has been explained many times
But yes, it’s great to see Ian get all excited about cramming a bunch of Classic era characters into the special. Can’t wait to see what’s in store

And to this very day, we still have Underground fans screaming away for just one more Sonic Underground story. Maybe SEGA will realize the mistake it made during Archie and permit the Sonic Prime folks to dedicate an episode to Sonic Underground.
Has Ian put Manic or Sonia in the comics? Cuz that feels like a very Ian thing to do.
Manic and Sonia never properly made it into the Archieverse aside from the brief Underground crossover back in Sonic Super Special #10. They would’ve been an extremely hard pill to swallow that would’ve only pleased an extremely small subset of fans and annoyed everyone else
However, Ian did try to throw fans of the show a bone with Sonic Universe #50, which was originally announced as an ending for Underground. They made a big fuss out of this and released the inks for the cover and everything... but then the plug was pulled, presumably by Sega, and Underground has been completely off limits ever since. (Actually, it had always been off limits before that too--there was just a brief period where the Archie gang thought Sega would make an exception for one issue.) It’s definitely a dick move of Sega to scrap an already announced issue in pre-production like that, and the issue probably would’ve been an interesting novelty, but it really, really, REALLY isn’t surprising that Sega circa 2013 wouldn’t want to shine the spotlight on Underground. I’m shocked they ever approved the issue in the first place. They should’ve just said no from the start and saved everyone the trouble
Of course, the one glimmer of hope for those interested in that story is that Ian has said he’ll reveal the scrapped plans someday as part of Lost Hedgehog Tales. You know, whenever the legal situation surrounding the Archie comics is finally cleared up once and for all and he’s allowed to talk about all that stuff again. Don’t hold your breath, but we’ll know about it eventually
There’s also a little nod in the form of Sonic and Sally’s kids being named Manik and Sonia in M25YL. (Ironically, I’ve heard some Underground fans took this as a spit in the face.) And because Archie’s Sonic canonically met the cast of Underground in Sonic Super Special #10, there’s no way for me to interpret that other than Sonic naming his kids after his alternate universe siblings

Aw man, but Underground has a fan following.
Could Sonic Prime’s multiverse-hopping story provide closure for the unfinished story of Sonic Underground for the fans if we get to visit Sonic Underground and will SEGA allow it?
There is absolutely no way in hell any official Sonic media is ever touching Underground ever again
