I finally got a new phone last week, which means that I’ve FINALLY lifted the rock I was living under and left the horse and buggy in the country and the ideas of “me” that I was certain I had broken through. But, alas, i will always be a certain something to you. The fucked up part of that is YOU get to decide. Today (well, I suppose it was “yesterday” at this point), I took those same 255 steps from my little beach town granny flat rental to your driveway. My legs are short, but I’ve paced out kickball fields enough to confidently think that’s a solid 85 yards....give or take about 4 feet because I might have lost count at some point. I knew this moment would come; it always serves as a sweet reminder of my size in this world: the sunflowers are finally taller than me today. They’re beautiful and strong and just waiting for the right moment to finally burst forth and lean towards the light. It dawned on me while I was walking back to my car today - I never did finish that book that I brought with me those years ago. A student of mine had gifted it to me on my last day of teaching (or was it Christmas?). I don’t remember much of it, but had these few sentences scribbled in the back of my Human Anatomy notes from that very same February: “You're not supposed to interject feelings into science, but part of the reason it's so fascinating that we're 8 percent (or more) fossilized virus is that it's so creepy that we're 8 percent (or more) fossilized virus.” I could pick apart that meaning until the cows come home, but I don’t feel like that’s the point.
