RIGHT??? Like BY ALL MEANS he shouldn't been as popular as he was, he's the antithesis of the leading man back then---a (by TV standard) dumpy, calm, bespectacled greying non-combat science type with no interest in one-upping anyone and LOTS of interest for Weird Shit like cockroach racing and numbers, and the only reason he goes to 'manly' stuff like boxing bouts is to study blood spatter like the incorrigible, unapologetic NERD that he is.

Who's CLEARLY on the spectrum somewhere and not a people's person but isn't MEAN about it (reasons I can't get into BBC Sherlock #1525433), exudes quiet confidence and finds his own weird joy in life despite his work, and is deeply empathetic to kids and people who can't speak for themselves not in a macho Horatio Caine way (we love Horatio Caine for his own weirdness but still) but in a "I'm not trying to fistfight someone for them, I want to get their voices heard and if they can't then I want to speak for them because someone has to".

And somehow for ALL THAT he's also the most understanding of human sexualities and all the kinks that come with it, and I SWEAR his interactions with Lady Heather (Specifically that "you can always say 'stop'" one) changed my brain chemistry as a teenager. I LOVE echoing that intimacy in my writing. I don't know whether I had a crush on him, looked up to him or adored him like a dad/mentor figure but goddamn he sure was one of the most character of all time.

in the film ravenous (1999), during the bathing scene, antonia bird said that she wanted to evoke a christ-like image with the character of colqhoun (played by robert carlyle). another time that antonia bird likens a robert carlyle character to jesus christ in one of her films is in priest (1994), which is a recurring theme throughout the movie, but especially during the communion scene, where scenes of carlyle's character (graham) are interspersed between the consecration of the bread and wine, especially scenes of graham and the titular priest having sex. this not only likens the character of graham to jesus, but it also likens the act of communion to the act of sex (gay sex), giving a whole new meaning to jesus' words of "this is my body which should be given up for you" communion also has a small part to play in ravenous, where it is compared to cannibalism
