A better, more positive Tumblr

Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).  

Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

So Long Tumblr

Tumblr has announced that starting December 17th, all Adult Content will be purged from the site. Given the prevalence of it on this website, this has come as something of surprise. While not all of my artwork is NSFW, it does happen quite often. Personally, I’m not willing to make any adjustments to adhere to Tumblr’s new policy, especially if DeviantArt and Pixiv still allow them. While we’re on the subject, I do tend to get more traction on those two sites anyway. So to lose my Tumblr gallery isn’t much of a loss to me.

With that said, I’ve decided to end my Tumblr Gallery. My final uploads, if I’m still alive and not banned, will be the Pocky-tans. After that, there will be no more artwork uploads on here from me. I’ll still hang around here perusing the place for inspiration and references, but artwork will no more than that,

Xenoblade Transcribed will resume as scheduled until all the images I have left for that site are uploaded.

Link Apocalypse

So I heard around the grapevine that in an effort to curb the pornbots plaguing Tumblr right about now, Tumblr decided to just outright carpet bomb ALL links within a post. If you have a link one of your posts, it disappears from search results. It won’t appear until you remove them. This also applies to links to other parts of Tumblr (like another user or your commissions page)

As you can guess, this is a bad move on Tumblr’s part, especially if you link to your Patreon or other galleries you have. That pretty much means that I’ll have to temporarily stop adding links to my art posts. If you need things like my social media, or my patreon they’re on my main page. Right click on my profile picture and open in a new tab. It’s on the right side of the page.

Rest in peace Stan Lee

Stan Lee... The more I think about it, the more I realized how much he ended up shaping what I am and what I do today. I watched the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Iron Man cartoons growing up. The comics I wouldn't read until much later in my life. For games, I played Spider-Man & Venom Maximum Carnage, and played a heavy amount of Marvel vs. Capcom. But what really kicked things off for my artist life was back in 1999, 6th grade, when I saw a kid in middle school draw The Hulk. And damn fine drawing at that. I wouldn't fully understand the themes of some of his characters until later in life. This was especially true for the X-Men and what its like to be different, Spider-Man and what means to take responsibility. While my art style leans on the more anime side, none of this art stuff I do wouldn't have started were it not for that one kid in middle school drawing The Hulk, one of Stan Lee's creations. He liked Stan's work enough to draw something, and that kid's passion passed on to me. It probably passed on to others too. Other kids most likely did what this one did, and inspired more to become artists. Stan most likely knew what he was doing, creating a chain-reaction of imagination and creativity, and giving birth to a new generation of artists.

Note: what's pictured isn't necessarily comics written or drawn by Stan Lee himself, but they involve his characters (or characters closely associated with his own, like Cloak and Dagger). The picture of Dagger on the tablet was drawn by me last year.

Chocolate Pocky ~ Choco-tan [Pocky Day 2018]

3 Welcome one and all to this year's Main Event. Pocky Day! Or in this case, Pocky Month! Yep, all month long I'll be creating characters based on the popular snack, Pocky! Kicking things off will of course be the most popular of all Pocky flavors, Chocolate! But before we begin... Self Critique: I kinda forgot to draw the back tie of the obi. By the time I realized it, it was too late. The outstretched hand is a little iffy to me. All of the girls in this set are dress in some form of kimono, all based on a flavor of Pocky. There's a bunch of flavors I could go based on, but to keep things simple, I chose the ones that are officially available and common in the U.S. Starting off, meet Choco-tan, representing Chocolate Pocky! I based the design of her kimono off the cacao plant,  the basic essence of chocolate. Much like all of the girls in this set (except one), I had to find a plant that would go well with a kimono that was based on the flavor represented. The initial pose had both of her arms bent inward. However I decided to bring one of them out in a sort of presenting manner, like she's greeting a viewer to the set and offering some Pocky! Kinda retreading old ground here since this pose is sorta similar to the one I did for Kim (Conquest of the Crystal Palace) from a few years ago. However this time I had a reference.

I was gonna keep things simple d just do a patterned background, but do one in such a way that it could look like packaging, right down to designing the chibi of Choco-tan. This whole set was actually planned since February of this year. And from the outset I planned for each girl to have a kimono and a floral design for their kimono (except for one of them, which I'll get to when that's done). It wasn't easy, especially when looking up designs for kimonos and how to arrange the patterns. The hairstyles weren't as easy. Choco-tan here is the tamest and most basic, but it only gets more extravagant from here. The little chibis actually came about from a sketch from when I was designing the lingerie. While I shelved the lingerie designs for now, I still wanted to keep the chibi heads that I drew. Keep your eyes opened though. I got something special planned for these soon!

[Commission] Hazel ~ Halloween 2018

Stylishly late! Self Critique: I made the bristles of the broom too big compared to the 1st sketch phases. As I got further, I tried to do a combo of a curved broom with foreshortening it away from the viewer, but it didn't quite go the way I intended. I was approached by DeviantArt user Christopia1984 to draw his character Hazel. I was to do a cute but sexy pose and a simple background. The pose was a bit tricky to think of. I kept going back to the pose you see now. But the problem was that it was similar to the one I did for Belinda last year. On the plus side, at least it gave me a second chance to take my time and correctly draw the ass (instead of doing a literal 1-Day rush from 1st Sketch to completion).

Looking at the reference I was provided, it looked like most of her outfit was made of a leather material (at least the boots anyway). The rest I had some free reign over the material, which gave me another chance to try out a shinier leather type of material. On the skirt, I used the watercolor brush and did a hard line, And with that same brush smoothed only one side of that line away from the light source This gave me an idea to do it on the rest of the corset. The result was pretty damn cool looking. And learning from the flame reflection that I did this year on Belinda, I tried it again on Hazel with her fireball. The results look pretty cool!

I was about to make the background orange and black. But The colors were clashing pretty badly with the color of the outfit, and made things something of an eyesore. I had an orange background throughout all of the shading process. And as I got further, it only made things more apparent that I can't have the background be this color. So I gave Hazel the Belinda treatment and made a predominantly purple background. I still kept an element of orange on this with that Happy Halloween sign though, but at least it's more or less overshadowed by the purples and blacks in the image. Given the nature of this project, I need to keep this a secret until around the middle of November. I’ll begin posting teasers closer to the end.
