Nonhumans and the Misinformation of the Internet
(UPDATED PARTS IN GREEN)
I have been seeing more and more posts of people complaining about misinformation surrounding Nonhumanity, so I decided to throw together this post to clear the air.
I use “entity” to refer to the things Nonhumans identify as (EX: animals, fictional characters, concepts, etc…)
Here are the some misconceptions about the Nonhuman community...
1. “We know we’re human.”/“We don't identify as animals.”/“We don’t identify as animals, we just have animal souls.”
This ignores the existence of Physical Nonhumans, which are individuals who physically identify as a nonhuman entity. In this case, what someone may be thinking of is Otherheartedness, where someone strongly identifies with a nonhuman entity instead of as one. Otherhearted individuals can experience many of the same things Physical Nonhumans do, like shifts, or species dysphoria. Nonhumans are not clinical lycanthropes, or people who think they can transform or have transformed into animals.
2. “All Therians and Otherkin had past lives as their Theriotypes and Kintypes.”
You do not need to have a past life as an animal to be a Therian or Otherkin. Although I have seen this be disproven many times before, I still see people working under the assumption that all Therians and Otherkin had past lives as their theriotypes and kintypes, which is untrue.
3. “Therians and Furries use litter boxes in school.”
This rumor is untrue and was created by right-wing individuals to disenfranchise Transgender people. Furries and Therians ended up getting roped up in this false rumor.
4. “Theriantropy is a spiritual belief.”
Not everyone has spiritual beliefs connected to their Nonhumanity. “Therian” or any other related label are not inherently spiritual identities, but they can be for some people.
5. “Kinning is just for fun, if you take it seriously you need mental help.”
Physical Otherkinity is not a mental illness or disorder because it does not significantly negatively impact people’s lives. “Kinning for fun” is a fandom activity where people who feel connected to a certain fictional character and identify as it. It can also be linking as a funlink.
6. “Nonhumans are mentally ill.
Nonhumanity is not a mental illness because, again, it does not significantly negatively impact people’s lives.
7. “Nonhumans are just kids dressing up and doing quads.”
Nonhumanity is far more complicated than a simple game of pretend played out by children. To dumb us down to what little content you see of us on platforms like TikTok and YouTube shorts is small-minded. You don’t have to have gear (masks, tails, ears, etc…) or do quads all the time to be nonhuman. It’s about how you feel inside. Many adults are Nonhuman too, sure, it’s less common to see on the internet, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
!!!Please note that some misinformation-spreaders are underage (less than 13) or may have a mental disability or illness. Please approach these people with kind firmness. If they react negatively, that’s their problem!!!
Sources (I have not personally used otherkin.wiki as a source, but from what I’ve heard, it’s a good one):

The Psychotic Part in All of Us
Few eclectic insights following Don Caverth on Bion, Lacan & conversations with friends
In Bionian psychoanalysis, the psychotic part of the psyche is a universal component of human experience. When we operate within the PS (paranoid-schizoid) position, we are engaging with this psychotic part. This aspect of the self actively resists emotional reality; it attempts to destroy or fragment painful thoughts and emotions. Sometimes, this includes attacking our own mental apparatus, undermining the very capacity to think and process experience.
Container and Contained: In Bion’s model, the mind is a potential container for truth. However, this container is not perfect; it is akin to a sieve, riddled with holes through which truth may escape. Lacan’s concept of foreclosure offers a parallel: the foreclosure of the fundamental gap or cut between subject and object—essential to recognizing “I am not the other”—can lead to psychosis. Bion’s understanding of the Oedipus complex reflects this dynamic. In the myth, Tiresias is blind, yet he sees the truth, while Oedipus blinds himself to evade reality.
Thoughts Without a Thinker: Bion’s concept of thoughts without a thinker describes the proto-mental realm, a state where unprocessed, uncontained thoughts exist without being assimilated into consciousness. Don Caverth questions this view, suggesting instead that these thoughts require a container to develop meaning. Without containment, they remain fragmented. When someone—or something—acts as a container, these thoughts can be integrated, enabling growth and understanding.
Dreams, according to Bion, are not merely a concealment of the unconscious but an active manifestation of the mind’s alpha function—its ability to transform raw emotional experiences into symbols and metaphors. This mythopoetic (what a fantastic word) quality of the mind operates unconsciously and is a marker of mental health. Dreaming represents the mind’s capacity to create subjectivity and generate a narrative, turning raw experiences into something meaningful.
Note: unlike Winnicott’s concept of “holding,” Bion’s container-contained relationship is not inherently nurturing. The container can crush the contained, or vice versa. This dynamic can be explosive, destructive, or even annihilative. Thus, the container-contained relationship represents not just support but also the potential for destruction.
Linking and Differentiation
Bion’s psychoanalytic framework emphasizes linking as a fundamental aspect of mental health. Attacks on linking—severing connections between thoughts, emotions, and experiences—are central to psychopathology. Don Coverth adds that psychopathology also includes attacks on differentiation, the capacity to distinguish self from other, mind from object. While Bion focuses on pairing and integration, Don emphasizes the necessity of separation and decoupling.
Sartre’s existentialist philosophy aligns with this idea: the mind is both a linker and a distinguisher, simultaneously connecting and differentiating. To create meaning, there must be a gap—a lack—between knower and known, between subject and object.
Dialectics of Psychoanalysis: Bion and Lacan
The dialectical nature of psychoanalysis emerges in the interplay between Bion’s focus on linking and Lacan’s emphasis on separation. Lacan’s concept of the No of the Father underscores a one-sided separation, which can result in an imbalance. Both the paternal function and the maternal function are necessary for a holistic understanding of the psyche. Lacan’s later work, in my perspective, especially his exploration of feminine jouissance, corrects some of this imbalance, integrating the idea of receptivity and creativity into his framework.
Productive Suffering and Mental Growth
As therapists, the goal is to help patients suffer productively—to think, talk, and feel their pain. This process fosters mental growth by bringing individuals closer to truth and reality. For Bion, mindlessness—the absence of meaning and the destruction of links—is analogous to Freud’s death drive. A healthy mind creates meaning, constructs stories, and generates images. Conversely, the destructive mind erases meaning, leaving chaos and fragmentation.
The ego-destructive superego, as described by Bion, exemplifies a container that undermines rather than supports. This parasitical linking consumes rather than nurtures, standing in stark contrast to the productive linking that fosters integration and understanding.
The Mystic and the Creative Genius. Bion’s idea of the mystic reflects the tension between innovation and societal resistance. Mystics bring new truths to light, but these truths often threaten established structures, which seek to suppress or contain them. Think of creative geniuses like Freud, Bion, or Giordano Bruno—figures who challenged conventional thinking and faced opposition for their insights. Creativity and truth are disruptive forces, but they are essential for growth and transformation.

welcome to copinglink-culture-is !!
Tumblr media
this [x]-culture-is blog is for c’linkers or linkers in general – anyone has the right to send asks and talk about their experiences here , because linking is a different experience for everyone , so there is no right or wrong . the goal of this blog is to basically share and spread the unique experience of us copinglinkers !!
This blog is ran by a Laios c’linker ( actually , he has way more linktypes than that but they link with Laios the most. ) who goes by any pronouns ! They really enjoy hearing about other people’s experience and running a culture-is blog has always been a dream of hers !
Tumblr media
Copinglink is the term used when someone/something chooses to identify as a character/animal/concept/etc in order to cope with trauma , stress , disorders , and/or other issues . This can be done either consciously , subconsciously , and so on .
Otherlink is “a voluntary identity as an alterhuman or fictional being, adopted for various reasons.” [ source ]
there are many more types of linking but they will be added later on , but the gist is – if you identify with any term that contains linking in its name , or have anything vaguely linking-related going on , then you’re allowed to send asks here :D
Tumblr media
I don’t do detailed DNIs but if you come to this blog with something negative in mind , then don’t interact . i’m aware that others have very graphic opinions about c’linking and alterhumanity as a whole but this isn’t the space to make those opinions known .
Tumblr media
requests are open ! no limit to how many asks can be sent !

so as we all know, i am link from the legend of zelda. pretty sure i'm every incarnation of the hero, though i feel more strongly connected to some lives than others.
all this to say. i think i might also be w(olf) link. like the animal crossing villager.
i. don't know what to think about that.
like putting aside the timeline implications of being yote from hyrule into a village of anthropomorphic animals by the human mayor and their all-powerful ghost friend.
what the fuck.

Howdy! I hope it’s ok to ask, but could you tell me a bit about what “link” means? /gen q
Hello! It's no worries, I'd love to answer your question, thusly I will :] Do note that I will be mostly talking about my own personal experience with Linking. Everyone's definitions and experiences will vary, so don't be afraid to ask around!
Now then: I've seen the term "Link" have quite a few definitions. When I was introduced to it, I saw it referred to as: "A character you identify with for coping/fun purposes"
Which for some folks, comes off as KFF (Kin For Fun), although it's more complex than that- at least for me.
In my personal experience, I would define "Link" as: "A character you identify with for generally any reason; A character you consider to be yourself, in some manner"
In my personal experience, I tend to fall in and out of Link stages. Many days, I am just my normal self: Cody.
However, on other days, I feel my sense of self shift. While I am still me- I have not blacked out, nor do I feel revolted by the idea of my Cody-self- I don't feel like Cody. I find myself wanting to talk through a character. Usually, as I talk on Discord a lot, I make myself a Tupperbox Bot. I find an image that fits how I feel. I assign it the name I feel, and the pronouns I feel. Here are some of my bots as examples!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The "[Link {☕}]" on my bots is for moderation purposes in servers, nothing more :]) (Quick image ID just in case, I'm bad at these but I hope I did it right) [ID: Seven Discord screenshots, all featuring messages made using Tupperbox bots. Each bot has the word "Link" and a coffee cup emoji in brackets at the end of their name, denoting that they're bots intended for Link-Shifts. Each bot represents six characters- all Homestuck characters, one character being doubled-up - and each has their own name and pronouns.. The first bot reads "Dualscar / Delfin (Avoid, Namself, Sea-Related). The second bot reads "Jake English!! (Any, Get Funky!). The third bot reads "The Orphaner Dualscar (He/Fin)". The fourth bot reads "Mituna", however his name is spelt using a typing quirk- making the "i" in his name be a "1" instead, doubling up the 1-I, and the "a" at the end being replaced with a "4". In plaintext, his pronouns read "(Any but she/her tbh)". The fifth bot reads "Rufioh Nitram!!", however the "i"s are replaced with "1"s. His pronouns read "(HE/RUF)". The sixth bot reads "CALIBORN", with fancy symbols around the name, his pronouns reading "(ANY/ALL)". The seventh bot reads "twinArgmageddons"- a mispelling of "twinArmageddons"- with his pronouns reading "[HE/IT, ANY]". Each bot has their own message, some with typing quirks and others without. End ID.] As is visible in my screenshots, sometimes I take up typing quirks- as they feel like the proper way for me to talk. Sometimes, I don't. My links can happen for multiple reasons. Sometimes I link due to stress. Sometimes I link because I'm jealous. Other times, my brain simply decides that it's time to link. Also as is visible in my screenshots, I tend to link male/masc characters- it's something due to me not wanting to be viewed in a feminine way online :]
Linking could be mistaken for roleplay, however it's more than that! You feel connected with the character- like you are them in some manner (at least in my experience). Unlike Kinning (at least from my understanding of Kinning), you don't feel completely like the character- you don't feel like a reincarnated version of them, or like the entirety of you is them. You still feel somewhat like yourself during a Link-Shift. Your concept of self just changes, in some manner (Again, at least in MY experience).
I guess as a TL;DR, a good explanation of "linking" is: "Feeling an identity-related connection to a character for reasons that vary from linker to linker."
Hope this helped!! :]

How linking hearttype works for me
Dropping this on tumblr for others purposes. Unedited.
I think in a way, I'm defining the distance.
I say "no, I want this to be something held dear, but it will not come closer to become a linked kintype". Like slaming a mental barrier that the connection cannot cross? If I'm making sense.
I set the perimeter I want in my head using the feelings I had with my preexisting hearttype, and aim for that instead.
It may or may not help that I'm using two paratype as foundation of the heartlink.
The vaguetype link does have hearted component too, but we did intentionally link that to be vague. I think that's a big part of it--to link is to want, so if you want your link to be a certain way, you need to change your mindset and intent for it to be that way too.
We aren't sure how much there needs to be understanding of the intended identity type you want to make linktype of, but we think it helps
So like, to link a hearttype, you might want to understand more intimately what a hearttype feels like, so you can aim for that instead of a kintype link. Or, you need to define where you want the connection to stop at, and maintain that instead of just maintaining the linktype itself, a added self-conditioning. At the base it all, is a perception shift, and mentality shift.
"I'm not trying to make this into me, I'm trying to make this into something that I feel connected to, something that I'd held dear, I'm making them my found family, my bond brother (neutral)"
