After infesting Pennsylvania these pests are moving into other states. A great concern for New York is the impact they will have on our Vineyards, as they have already desecrated many crops.

You can report any signs of SLF infestation to the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets at agriculture.ny.gov/ReportSLF. Include photos, location of infestation, and details of property damage.

Thai Spiky Isopod

Family: Armadillidae Scientific Name: Isopoda sp. Adults : 0.5-1.2 cm

Just look at their little spikes!!! 😍 I didn't know the family name of these little potato bugs/rolly pollies (New York names) until a few days ago and I can't stop saying it.

Armadillidae. (arm-uh-dilly-day) It's really just the -dillidae that gets me. 😆

A lot of the information out there has more to do with keeping them in terrariums so I'm still on the lookout for more "scientific" information. 🤔

Common Names: Ground Ivy, Creeping Charlie, & gill-over-the-ground

Perennial herbaceous plant

Native to Europe, and introduced to North America as early as the 1800's. It is considered Invasive in the U.S as it forms dense patches that can push out native plants.

Pollinators include: Anthophora furcata (Fork-tailed flower bee) Anthidum manicatum (European wool carder bee) Anthophora plumipes (Hairy-footed flower bee) Anthophora quadrimaculata (Four-branded flower bee) Anthophora abrupta (Minor bee) Osmia aurulenta (Gold-fringed mason bee) Osmia caerulescens (Blue mason bee) Osmia lignaria (Blue orchard bee)

Microplastic warning - try not to use these

Spring gardeners, if you haven’t started your cold season crops, you probably will soon! With that in mind, we’d advise avoiding these seed starting products. They make starting seeds easy, but they also use polypropylene, polyethylene, and polylactic acid (PLA is what companies are shifting to, because it’s the least harmful of the three, but it’s still being studied). Best not to be using polyesters in your garden - they degrade and then you wind up with microplastics in the soil. It’s virtually impossible to remove the plastic net without tearing roots, which are meant to grow through them, too. 

These pods also come with a lot of excess packaging and use peat. Peat’s hard to avoid in gardening, but because it’s such an incredibly unsustainable product, we suggest skipping it whenever possible. 

Instead of using these, what we do is mix garden soil with only a tiny layer of peat seed starter on top in a reused plastic pot from plants we’ve bought at nurseries or plant sales. It’s not a scalable solution for agriculture, but it works well in a home garden.
