Front side -- Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), a famous German entomologist, naturalist and biological illustrator. By the time of her death, she had raised at least 300 species of insects and produced four books on her scientific work. Her images were the first to portray insect metamorphic cycles and behaviors centered around the plant species that nourished the caterpillars. In the background, buildings from historical Nuremberg.
Reverse side -- a dandelion (Taraxacum), with the caterpillar and butterfly of the pale tussock moth (Calliteara pudibunda). The Dutch common name for the moth Meriansborstel is named for Merian.

Plate 8 from Merian’s first "The Wondrous Transformation of Caterpillars and their Strange Diet of Flowers" book showing a dandelion and the lifecycle of the pale tussock moth.

Johan’s Presents
Caterham Super Seven toy/model car
Tumblr media
The Lotus Super 7 was a lightweight, fast, minimalist, sports car produced by the British manufacturer Lotus Cars. It was designed by Lotus founder Colin Chapman and has been considered the embodiment of the Lotus philosophy of performance through low weight and simplicity. Most cars were sold as kits and the simplicity of the car was such that most people could assemble the kit in their garage in one weekend.    Production started in 1957, and continued until 1972 under the Lotus name. In 1973 Lotus sold the Super 7 rights to Caterham, which continues to produce the cars to this day.
Tumblr media
Caterham Super Seven can also be seen in “Cop or Hood” (Flic ou voyou), a 1979 French crime and action film directed by Georges Lautner, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. It's possible that Urasawa watched it and dreamed of having the car in his youth.
                                                             ---------
Teddy bear
Tumblr media
The teddy bear is a stuffed toy named in honor of U.S. president Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, after he refused to shoot a bear during a Mississippi hunting trip in November 1902. During the trip, guides clubbed a bear and tied it to a tree then invited the president to shoot it. Instead, Roosevelt declined, saying it would be unsportsmanlike to kill a defenseless animal that way.
As news of the hunting trip spread, many newspapers around the country featured cartoons starring "Teddy" and "the bear", where it was made to look smaller and cuter. A man named Morris Michtom saw one of the cartoons and had an idea. Michtom and his wife created a tiny soft bear cub and put it in the front window of their candy shop with a sign "Teddy's bear". The toys were an immediate success and the couple decided to start a toy company.
Teddy bears are among the most popular gifts for children and are often given to signify affection and sympathy.

Hey Erich! This blog is amazing! I had a question, do you know what the lyrics are for the first 10 seconds of the Monster opening song?
Thank you. I've never seen the lyrics to Kuniaki Haishima -- Grain being revealed officially, but some people claim it's "the monster deep in his lair" repeated twice, and it does sound probable.
