the fact that diana knows gabe’s entire schedule - a schedual that doesn’t even exist - and doesn’t know natalie’s is a detail that absolutely guts me

no because Diana is convinced that if she never grieves Gabe, she'll never really lose him, but dan thinks that if he just completely ignores Gabe's existence, now or before his death, he will never have to feel the pain of the loss. and then there's natalie, who experiences the grief her parents are incapable of feeling, passed down to her.

okay. i need people to understand the main issue here. ncuti gatwa is the first (full time) black doctor. his entrance was overshadowed by david tennant. his entire run has been the least watched run, many of you admit you did not watch his era. now, after only 16 episodes and a few specials he has regenerated and all people are talking about is billie piper. do you really not see the issue at all? and don't even get me started on what they did to belinda! i'm so BOGGLED by the amount of disrespect thrown at fifteen. he barely got to BE HIS OWN CHARACTER. we barely know him and he's gone. unreal.

Happy pride month specifically to folks on the asexual and aromantic spectrum who oftentimes feel isolated and left out of the conversation. You belong here as much as the rest of us and I hope that you are all loved in a way that is comforting to you.

The face when you’ve been spinning on the floor for 14 minutes and your wife is saying catch me Im falling like you haven’t been catching her for 19 years:

just realised that when gabe says "I am more than memory" it is meant both metaphysically of him as a concept and also literally within the context of the musical, i.e., even when Diana loses her memory, the echoes of Gabe (grief) still linger within her because he is, in fact, more than memory, and again i am not okay

the fact that the title of the musical is sung by natalie and she’s the one who turns on the light, because this was never about natalie but it was always about natalie

ok but what has been described as Gabe's 'sinister smile' is almost always directed at Natalie
Tumblr media
when she's signing Super Boy and the Invisible Girl, he starts singing along, highjacking the melody and smiling all the while
because even though she's singing in sadness and anger
she's still singing about him
the sister who never met him is acknowledging his presence. perhaps more even more than his parents are

I don’t understand why people keep saying that Gabe goes away at the end of next to normal. In Light Diana literally says „some hurts never heal / some ghosts are never gone“ as Gabe stands on the stairs behind them all. Like. He‘s faded into the background and they‘re learning to live with his presence in a healthier way but he will never truly leave. You have to acknowledge your grief to process it but that doesn’t mean it just goes away. That’s the whole point I fear.

one of the details in next to normal that genuinely makes me insane is the fact that diana isn’t just imagining a perfect son when she imagines gabe. yes, he’s her “superboy,” but in the very first part of the musical, when she’s “waiting up for him,” she imagines him coming home late like any other teenager. she complains and calls him a loser and a brat and a little shit. she’s not imagining a reality that never would have happened where gabe grew up to be the perfect child that never causes her any problems or stress. she imagines him as a real teenager, someone that could have been. diana doesn’t want the perfect son. she wants her son.

Dan asking Diana “Why would you want to remember the things that hurt you?” and it being revealed he’s being repressing his grief the entire time and refusing to acknowledge the the things that have hurt him. God.

the way dan screams diana! during i’m alive [reprise] fucking GETS ME. EVERY TIME. particularly in jamie parker’s rendition because yes he might sound a little like a muppet but it’s so full of fear and grief and anger and panic and GOD we just watched this man clean up his wife’s blood and stand by her and do his absolute best and now he is just so terrified for her oh my god.
