Also interesting that every friendship pair you pointed out for HC fandom is of the same gender because there’s a tendency to like same gender friendships over friendship between a man and a woman because the latter immediately gets categorised as either romantic or sibling-like. Instead of being what they are (friends). Like there weren’t many popular different gender pairs duo in HC (ofc Jleo is a staple) before the current Gem+Etho, Gem+Grian, etc.

“Hetbait” is fun because you have to really develop the dynamic without letting heteronormativity do all or most of it. You have to convince the audience these two have a deep and affectionate bond even if they’re not romantic. And this makes shipping more fun because there’s a basis to go after. But you also don’t need shipping if you don’t want to because the canon material is already great.
