Another year at Uni in London has come and gone and i’m still scratching my head as to whether this was the right course for me. Yeah, i learn some cool stuff and i’ve made some incredibly valuable contacts but the course seems very up it’s own arse...

Me and a handful of others are there purely to learn sound design with the bonus of learning about Sound Art and culture at the same time, however, the course and course leaders seem to be very geared toward sound art and know very little about the sound for media industry as a whole. The only true lessons we got on actual sound design were during a six week option block...

Now my final year is approaching and with it, my major project and dissertation. When i explained to the head of year what i had planned i was met with a blank face, she didn’t have the slightest clue about anything i was talking about and tried to recommend books that weren’t even slightly related to the areas i wanted to explore. If all goes well i���ll be able to justify it to my new head of year this September and get the go ahead. Otherwise i’ll have to come up with some bullshit project just to “tick the boxes”.

Back Home

Just dragged my bags through the door to my house and collapsed into bed. I get to chill out and do absolutely nothing for the next 2 and a bit weeks. 

Is this needed? 

Absolutely.

Is it enough? 

No.

 I am a home bird and in an ideal world i would take as much time at home as i can possibly get. Yeah sure, London is a lot more interesting and fun but i do enjoy the quiet of my town and surrounding area.  It just has a certain charm that i never appreciated until i got used to the chaotic city lifestyle.

So now i’m lying in my bed and couldn’t possibly be more content than i am right now.

The sound of empty space brings together three works by Montreal-based sound artist and experimental composer Adam Basanta that each explore the phenomenon of feedback.

Feedback is almost always a sound that is unwanted. Most often caused accidentally, it is the result of a loop created when the audio output of a system is directed back into its input, that is, when a speaker is placed too close to a microphone. It is a sound born of this tension between microphone and speaker; a volatile sound, threatening to break out into a jarring, high-pitched screech. But it is this unwelcome, unpredictable sound that Basanta is able to manipulate into nuanced, gentle and precisely tuned tones in his work.

Finding a legendary item.

Context: so I (a human barbarian) and my buddy (an orc archer) enter a cave. after fighting a whole host of bears (yes, bears) and goblins and shit, we come across a set of chests.

Barbarian: Look, i’m just saying that because I had to fight the fucking bear, i should get the right one.

Orc: no, fuck that man, i shot like, all the goblins. i had to use my torches as arrows!

Barbarian: well, bring more arrows next time.

DM: guys, just take a fucking chest already.

*after rolling to see who goes first, the orc wins*

Orc: alright, i choose the right one. *rolls for chance, fucks up*

DM: you got; the thanatato! *dun dun dun duuuuuu!*

Orc: what the fuck is this shit?

DM: if anyone nearby says “cool potatoes” they die instantly.

barbarian: what the hell? thats useless! no one is going to say “cool potatoes!”

Orc: whelp, you died. i call dibs on your armor.

DM: yeah, you can roll to see if you die or no.

Barbarian: *curses* fine! *rolls poorly* FUCK

DM: yep, ‘tis a devastating weapon.

Trust me, I'm a Wizard.

*Context: I’m DM'ing a game for a few friends. In this game, they’re all wizards and all kobolds. They’re currently apprentices and have been sent into the basement to deal with giant rats and a mysterious odor. They’re trying to solve a puzzle in a room full of spikes* Lyth (OoC): I look up at the ceiling for clues.

DM: Okay, roll perception for me.

*Nat 1*

DM: You look immediately at the floor.

Lyth: Holy shit, when did I get on the ceiling?!

Plan Ahead

So turns out a little prep work can go a long way. I’ve been procrastinating from an essay for the past month. It’s due in next week… along with 2 other projects… which i also haven’t done. So at 3am last night i jumped out of bed; scaring the shit out of my girlfriend in the process, and started hastily scrawling notes down into my notebook. Within 10 minutes i had the entire structure of my essay done and the details of both projects sorted. Shouldn’t take more than a couple of days to do them all.

Fellow procastinators, it doesn’t take a lot of time to plan. Get this shit done early!
