In my experience as a third culture kid who travels a lot the best indicator that you as a non-x is appreciating x culture is if the locals actively invite you to participate in it with them
Yes, you are allowed to buy those handmade Inuit winter clothes if an Inuk is literally selling them to you. They would not be offering you a price point if they didnt want you to buy and wear them. And you might discover that theyre the best winter clothes youve ever worn because of COURSE they would be if theyve kept this culture warm in harsh winters for thousands of years.
Yes, you are allowed to join those Cambodians in that local holiday theyre celebrating during your visit if they literally invited you to it. They would not have invited you if they didnt want you to participate. And in the process you might learn a lot about a culture you never wouldve interacted with and you can all have a laugh together about your clumsy but genuine attempts at getting your footwork right in one of their traditional dances.
Yes, you are also allowed to ask if you can participate in something from the local culture you are visiting. Sometimes you will get "sorry, thats a closed practice" but in my experience most of the time you'll get "of course, let me show you how to do this!" And in my experience people tend to appreciate when others make an active effort in sharing their culture and wont stone you to death if youre clumsy about it while youre learning. I guarantee that the local children doing all of this for the first time too make the same mistakes you do and they can tell if youre being disrespectful or genuine.
So much "cultural appropriation" discourse really starts to sound like "you cant participate or visit any other cultures if youre from a Colonial Culture and have to stay in your little box and never relate to other people"

if you have a popular post on this site inevitably people will tag it with something like “croggles to bringles when they lost the ploogie in ep 10” and it rules. i have no idea what you’re talking about but you’re right this IS so croggles to bringles when they lost the ploogie in episode 10.

i’m curious what arbitrary and specific flavors people dislike are. rb and tag a Taste you simply don’t fuck with. for flavor reasons not texture reasons. for me? i do not like elderflower or caraway for whatever reason

The only thing I am ashamed of… is that I didn’t do something to save him when we had the chance. That instead I listened to you.

i do think it's interesting how the primary misstep people seem to make when it comes to analyzing severance is seeing the innies and outies as entirely separate characters. when i think the coolest thing about the way the show has gone about doing its doppelganger concept is the way it so thoroughly problematizes any attempt to do that. normally when stories do a doppelganger, that character is either an unambiguously separate character who is only metaphorically the same as the protagonist, or an alter ego who represents a piece of or exaggeration of the protagonist. or a literal twin, or clone, or double. in all cases the story is usually about that which we consider falsely other to ourselves. and maybe the story plays the monstrous otherness straight, or maybe it's about the consequences of seeing parts of yourself as a monstrous other. but regardless of what exactly the story is doing the doppelganger in question is in some sense made literally other, whether physically (frankenstein's creature) or in terms of character (mr. hyde, tyler durden).
whereas in severance the only difference between the innies and outies is their memories. no one's been possessed, or lost their soul. repeatedly, elements of the innies or outies bleed through. and yes of course, philosophically, you can argue about whether--by having different memories--this does make the innies and outies as separate of people as say, clones might be. ie, people who also have different physical existences. and i don't think the show is running away from that discussion or something. clearly, given the whole conversation about "do innies and outies have separate souls" from 2x06, it's a question that's on the table.
but the point i'm trying to make is that for the purposes of metaphor, by making the innies and outies share a body and a selfhood, it immediately and viscerally becomes painfully obvious that severed characters really are otherizing themselves. they are punishing themselves, ignoring themselves, betraying themselves, fighting themselves, dehumanizing themselves, abusing themselves. they are doing that to someone who is a person, because the person is them. the false otherness isn't a surprise, it is deliciously plain, almost pathetic or mundane. and that is a different and interesting kind of horror.

i've written lengthly meta on here and explained my thoughts to friends for hours about the ending of black sails for each and every individual character and but really it can be summarised really neatly in one word. Compromise. it is an ending of compromise - for everyone and isn't that just thematically brilliant. vane was always right in that scene in miranda's house "give us your submission and we will give you the comfort you need."

ive been embroidering for nearly half my life and it still blows my mind how cheap it is as a hobby tbh. it can be as expensive as you want to make it, sure. I've definitely invested in nicer tools when I had the finances to do so. But relatively compared to other hobbies it's kinda nuts that a splurge on materials is like. 9 bucks for a pack of some of the fanciest needles you can buy. Silk thread for 6 dollars. The industry gold standard thread is the stuff already available at every single craft store in the USA. If you follow exacting patterns that require a lot of color changes it can add up, but those are often projects that require weeks or months of work. Let's say you had 50 color changes and the project uses most of each skein. That's months of hobby-ing right there, for about 50 dollars plus the cost of base materials which is under 10 dollars.
