Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl! Don't just look online or read/listen to books. Interview professionals. Call their office, hospital, police station, etc. Tell them you're writing a novel and you need to do a ride-along or interviews.

Deputy Robert Mirabal is the technical advisor for THE OUDERKIRK HOUSE. I did a ride-along and interviewed him as we raced to a break-in, then patrolled all night. Island County Sheriff's Department features heavily in OUDERKIRK. I wanted them to be shown as the small island heroes they are. I'm including him in my acknowledgments and dedication for the novel.

Interviews are easy. Just have your questions in mind, or even written down, then take copious notes of everything they say. You never know what you might need to use in your novel. Enjoy it. Talking to people was the best part of my job as a journalist and foreign correspondent. You'll just be doing your job, after all!

So I’ve noticed that in this fandom it’s common to include Deaf/ASL-using-characters into stories, which is honestly AMAZING and makes me SO HAPPY TO SEE, but many of us aren’t deaf we rely on resources, therefore:

My ASL teacher gave us this website cause it’s updates constantly (ASL evolves lots) and it’s a lot more accurate and reliable than just google :))

To work it- type the word, and a word bank will pull up, click on the term u want and a video/description of the sign and word will appear!!!

It’s rlly simple and has most words and if it doesn’t it’s bc it’s finger spelled probs!!!!

If u want more in-depth good grammar, search up “five parameters ASL”, “glossing in ASL” and watch a few videos to see “how sentence structure differs in ASL”

As always, remember it’s ok to make mistakes/notice a mistake, just be mindful and kind :D most of us aren’t out for malice and if someone is it’ll probs be very obv 😭

i have a few resources i look to consistently but i'm gonna plug anatomy for sculptors as One Of The Most Useful. great if you're a 3D artist, INVALUABLE if you're a 2D artist. gives you turnarounds of specific limbs/fiddly body parts like ears. great especially if you're referencing a photo and start looking at an individual part like 'wait, what the hell is going on in there'

Been going through a lot of animation reels this past week and a bit and one prevailing thing I noticed was that a lot of animators either struggle with, or completely disregard, the timing and pacing of their frames. Timing and spacing is (to me) utterly essential to create some nice, smooth and well flowing animation, otherwise it can look very jittery, jumpy, volume will fluctuate greatly and won't look too good.

This clip here should help show you how I place my keys, breakdowns and inbetweens to get some nice movement. (I wish I had room for timing charts!)

As you can see from the timeline grab here, a lot of this is on 3's, with a few 2's here and there. Even some 4's to help ease. With proper placing of frames even 3's and 4's can look smooth!

ok so! first of all here's the site I mentioned (highly suggested, you won't regret the hard work).

then for a small tutorial (I hope I make sense)

The line of action is not the curve of the spine, but the path of the movement of the body. More like a guide of the force and movement of an action. You can use more than one on a single pose of a figure, eg for the torso and for the arms or one for an arm and one for the rest of the body.

First thing you wanna do is find the movement in the pose you wanna create. every pose has movement, even "static" ones like sitting, sleeping etc and even if you're only drawing a bust.

(for this,as with all drawing, the best advice is to observe real life, even before starting practicing drawing poses)

so, step 1: draw a line

the human body mostly moves through S an C shapes, an S shape is good to start with because we are usually starting with a core movement, so the torso is the main character here.

I said that the line of action is not necessary the spine, but it can happen to be similar or close to it as it is our core. just do not let that constrain you.

step 2: head, rib cage and pelvis

using the first line we're placing these three along it and marking what direction they're facing with those cross lines.

you can already see the movement.

step 3: secondary lines of action

be loose and go with the flow! Remember: ACTION FIRST, STRUCTURE SECOND! that means that the anatomy comes after the movement you are trying to depict. build the structure on top of the action.

(of course that does not mean anatomy is less important, they work in tandem, and a better learning of anatomy gives you also a better grasp on portraying movement)

step 4: legs, aka more Lines of action

the line of action is not necessarily a curve, it can also be a straight, and creating a visual contrast using both types makes the pose more interesting.

Of course there isn't a single way to do the same thing

a single line of action (B) would have also worked to start with!

Here's 2 examples of more dynamic poses I drew:

with more dynamic and extreme poses the main line of action is more often a C shape as the body compresses. (objects can have lines of action too! notice donnie's bo and mikey's nunchaku)

As I said, learning anatomy goes hand in hand with practicing poses and lines of action, as you will notice how the single parts of the body move and the way they all have their own intrinsic movement.

To start is useful to take some pictures of people/animals and just draw the lines of action on top. Start with just one line of action and after you've practiced a bit, move on to photos of more complex poses and find the secondary lines.
