My mom used to be borderline homophobic before I came out. She wouldn't have assaulted or insulted anyone for their identity or sexual orientation, but she wouldn't have defended them either. She didn't make homophobic jokes, but she laughed at them all the same. That only changed a few years ago, when I cut my hair short, and she realised my gender expression made me at risk of being attacked by homophobes and transphobes. She started to educate herself on LGBTQIA issues and what certain acronyms and terms meant, to ask my opinion on representation on the media, etc

Today, she went to work (in the catholic school where she teaches) wearing a rainbow shirt for pride. The only gay teacher went to hug her when he saw it, and was very emotional because that was the only pride-related support he had seen in the whole school. It's a very small gesture, and it's not going to change homophobes' or transphobes' minds, but it's a way of saying "I see you, you matter".

Unfortunately, I can't help but think she wouldn't have changed if I hadn't come out. Which begs the question : how many people would actually be supportive if they only saw things through their kid's eyes ? We can't just wait and count on that to happen. But maybe, just maybe, seeing my mom's shirt today made one if her students feel safe, and help them come out in the long run.

In any case, she's come a long way, I'm proud of her, and I wish for every LGBTQIA kid to have a supportive parent like her.

Emergent help with groceries, living expenses, about to be homeless after mom/caregiver passed away

Hi everyone. At the end of April, my mom passed away by suicide. She was my caregiver and supported me financially. As of right now, I'm waiting for a disability claim to go through. I am currently battling a bad bout of depression due to my mom's death and my financial situation I currently haven't ate in 2 days and I'm literally going to starve without some type of help.

As of May 1, I owe $1150 in rent. This is because our apartment is 2 bedrooms and meant for 2 people. I'm currently looking for a new fully wheelchair accessible apartment but need some time. In the darkest of times, I need support. Please boost and share.
