Shouto Headcanons

Since I am not actively writing anything BNHA for the moment (lemme get through May, I'll be back, I swear), I'm thinking about Todoroki Shouto.

Well, I'm thinking about Shouto and headcanons I've seen that I do not jive with, and since I'm in no position to throw stones with my "Shouto grows out his hair as an adult" why the fuck did Hori give him the ugliest ass shit hair cut that looks like he hacks it himself with fucking scissors? headcanon, I'm just going to share some other thoughts.

I'll start with my favorite headcanon and work my way back, since I've already mentioned it, but Shouto grows his hair out as an adult. It probably starts with just not getting around to getting it cut for a bit, so it was getting a little too long, and Enji, of course, had to say something about it, activating Shouto's inner troll, so he refuses to cut it out of spite. His hair is canonically fireproof, so he uses his fire to dry it, which generally makes haircare, even when it gets stupid long, a lot easier than it is for most.

Shouto absolutely has a spiteful streak, and I get literally endless mileage out of the fact that Shouto could make any number of decisions that would usually be dumb or even out of character in other circumstances because he wants to spite his dad.

Here's a big one I think gets overlooked: Shouto has terrible self-esteem. This is something that actually gets a lot worse after Izuku does his Talk-no-jutsu mojo on him at the Sports Festival. Up to that point, Shouto's fairly self-obsessed and is absolutely fixated on surpassing his father as a hero, and he would absolutely step on someone or over someone to get there. The thing is, when he's like this, he's also being as selfish and self-centered as Enji is about the task. Not a surprise, given his father, and this whole "pursuit of being a hero for the sake of recognition alone" is exactly why both he and Katsuki end up in the remedial course. It takes time for him to actually break down his motives for wanting to be a hero, even after he decides to own his own power. It's once he does--and once he really starts to allow himself to unpack his father's abuse--that we see Shouto's self-esteem for what it really is, and it's pretty awful. The way that Enji puts saving Touya explicitly on Shouto's shoulders makes it even worse, and here's why:

His entire life, Shouto has been explicitly told that 1) he was only ever born to achieve his father's ambitions, and 2) the only value he has is as his father's masterpiece. Shouto is not special; his quirk is. Deciding he wants to be a hero because he actually wants to help people is inextricably tied up in the fact that he feels his only real value is in his quirk. To not use it would be tantamount to blasphemy or sacrilege, but it's his quirk that's special, not Shouto.

The thing is--Shouto knows how powerful he is. He knows how competent he is. He's very confident in his power and his skill, and that confidence is usually a sign of good self-esteem. Except not in Shouto's case. Shouto turns that initial selfishness around to such an extreme that he takes selflessness to a dangerous level (and let's be real here, his best friend is Izuku, who is hardly a good role model with how much he hurts himself). He will put anyone and everyone's needs before his own--especially with his family. He becomes the kind of hero who will give and give and give until there is nothing left. Naturally, this also translates into him being an absolute workaholic. He doesn't see himself as anything special or remarkable--after all, his quirk is half his mother's, and half his father's, and he's pretty sure Enji couldn't have made him more perfectly to fulfill his vision of an heir if he tried. Yes, he's powerful, but he's powerful by design. It wasn't blind luck of the draw or even hard work--because it takes a long time to truly understand how much his childhood training was extreme--but even his mastery doesn't feel earned because he was forced to master it, it was just what was expected of someone with his power. Worst of all--he always rose to the challenge and basically proved it right. Only he doesn't see it as "rising to the challenge," but "meeting the bare minimum." Because Enji did not set the bare minimum bar low, and Shouto definitely does not have a realistic perspective on exactly how high it was set.

And if Shouto hadn't internalized that his only value was in his quirk before finding out Touya was alive, he definitely did it after. He had to save Touya, and no one once considered that it might kill Shouto to do so.

He loves his friends but he doesn't really understand what he brings to the table. He's just really, really glad they seem to value him too.

As far as shippy fics go--most of the long ones will deal with Shouto's partner recognizing his shit self-esteem and trying to help him value himself the way his friends and partner does.

Seeking a Soft Place to Land When I Fall Ends!

Another longfic completed! And then because I'm Like This, what do I do but go--"What about IcyHotWings Mpreg with Shouto pregnant by both Keigo and Touya?"

Introduce a new item to the to-do list.

Before I can do that, however, I have a few other fics.

First up--a Gundam Wing longfic first, but it should be posted quickly because it's it's for a May event, so I'm going to have fun speed-running that. As it's planned, it's going to have 13 chapters, so wish me luck.

The planned longfic after that is a ShoutoMight time travel fic that's been itching at me. Targeting loosely 50-60k on it, and this fic is going to be very special to me, even though I know, due to the ship, it won't be popular.

From there, I have a few longfic options:

RoyEd Omegaverse followup fic - this is going to be a shorter end of a longfic, but it's the mpreg followup to the omegaverse oneshot, and I've just been dragging my feet on it

The Lives Todoroki Shouto Didn't Live - this is planned to be a DekuBakuTodo fic, but the central idea came from a Twitter thread where someone asked how things would have been different if Enji had been a good father. This fic is meant to look at a lot of those "what-if" scenarios with a background thread of Shouto learning to value himself as more than just a tool. There will also be at least one DabiShou chapter 'cause I'm me and shameless

I didn't know where else to go - a DabiShou fic where Dabi escapes (kind of accidentally) from Tartarus and goes to Shouto for help. Featuring Healer!Shouto and a traumatized child with an ice quirk. Slow burn fall in love.

IcyHotWings Mpreg - featuring Slutty!Shouto, accidental bitching, and accidental pregnancy

We'll see which of those I chose when I get there, but the other two take precedence. If you're particularly interested in anything up and coming, let me know.

Seeking a Soft Place to Land When I Fall Delayed

Just a day--I promise! And it's going to be another chonky chapter, but my options at this point are to either split the chapter in 2 and mess up my structure for the rest of the fic, or just finish it tomorrow. I'm opting for finishing it tomorrow.

Sorry--I knew this was going to be a big chapter and should have started it Sunday, but I got lazy. Hopefully the smexy will be worth the wait.

Are people reluctant to leave kudos/comments on darkfic and/or smut? I ask because my dark and sexy fic has half the kudos but as many hits as my other stuff, and the people who have commented REALLY like it so I don't think it's a bad fic. Maybe a poll would be helpful here? Like, "are you reluctant to interact with dark and/or sexually explicit fics" with the options "yes, both" "yes, dark" "yes, explicit" and "no"

2024 Posting Stats

So I did this last year, so I thought I'd do it this year too since I was tracking anyway.

I posted a grand total of 518,069 words in 2024. (To be fair, I wrote some of those in other years, but I also have plenty I wrote in 2024 that I didn't post, so sticking strictly with "posted in 2024" should be fairly honest).

Just a heads up about Bent Beneath a Full Collar's Weight--it will be updated tomorrow not tonight. I've got it about half done, but just finally got all the guests out of my house and I'm coming down with a cold. Hopefully, sleeping for the next 12 hours will help with that.

Update on this--so I reported the user, Tundra, and a couple other DabiShou fics I found. I stated both that one of the fics I reported was mine and stolen, and then reported the other two DabiShou fics for being in violation of TOS because they're--shocker--INCEST.

The response I got was a canned response about issuing a DCMA takedown if it's mine. To say that's unsatisfactory is... an understatement.

It's batshit that I should have to issue a DCMA takedown for something so easily provable as stolen.

Since incest is explicitly against Wattpad's TOS, I DEFINITELY should not have to issue a DCMA takedown for a fic that is in blatant violation of the site's terms.

Since they're completely ignoring the fact that I called out the entire account should be considered suspect, they're obviously prioritizing their user (even if a bad actor) over me, the rightful author of at least one of the stolen fics. On what planet would I trust them with my IRL information to submit the DCMA takedown? (if you didn't know, an official takedown request requires providing your IRL information).

None of this even touches on the plagiarism this account is undertaking, which is ALSO against the TOS.

I don't use Wattpad because its algorithm-driven bullshit made zero sense to me, and the one time I did look through it, I could not find anything worth reading. I also don't use it because of its content policies, which actually shows more respect for their content policies than this trashy thief who thought running the fics through GoogleTranslate would let them slide under the content radar.

Funnily enough, they closed my initial ticket after giving me the copyright advice, and then sent me a "are you satisifed" survey.

Suffice to say, I blasted them (in my best professional language, which--since I've worked customer service, is very good). I've also gone back to re-report all three DabiShou fics under just the content violations (Tundra's the only one of the three that doesn't have a Dead Dove tag on Ao3, which just means the other two are in violation of the content TOS twice-over).

I'll provide an update on both the response to the second report and my blatant blast of their "service."

I was just informed by a kind reader that someone else had plagiarized my story from a03 onto wattpad, and apparently using an auto translator, too, lmao.
