the pain of lucas waving at max in the stands at the pep rally.... ack. he seems so hopeful and sweet and nervous, raising his hand up with that little smile. and you think he's just more smitten with her than before, like he can't wait to see her every morning, he's proud of his place on the basketball team but he's not different, he's the same lucas that's crazy for his girlfriend. he makes sure he still finds her in the crowd of people, he sees her because she's the girl he looks for. he looks into the crowded bleachers and scans for her red hair, for her familiar face. he smiles, hopeful, and waves, because he wants to wish her good morning, he wants to make sure she knows that he's thinking about her.

and then the camera cuts to max. she holds his eyes for a few beats, because of course she was look right back at him. but her face doesn't change, her lips don't twitch at his dorky wave, her eyes don't sparkle with the fact that he's the center of attention of this pep rally but she's still the center of his attention. she holds his gaze and then turns her head. whatever he wants from her, she doesn't have to give him anymore. she doesn't have it in her to fake a smile, she can't bother to lift her hand to wave back. she looks at him but can't bear to be looked back at for too long. so she looks away and breaks off the moment. lucas is living his life, he's changing, he's growing. max is stuck, in the trailer park, in shitty grades, stuck in her head, stuck in her memories of billy, stuck in this shitty life.

and lucas's smile drops, his hand lowers, and he shifts uncomfortably. standing up there with everyone's eyes on him is strange and new and exciting but it's not the same without max smiling at him in the bleachers.

There's just something so beautiful about a heartbreaking queer film made with love ... They do not die for the comfort of the audience who hated them from the start, they do not fall apart for the sake of those wishing for it, they do not find themselves in pain for some leering indulgement of hatred, but because they are human and they are in love and how else does tragedy come about?
