I took my own advice and used a reference to draw this picture. There are still flaws, but I’m happy with how she turned out. I think I’ll call her Jane. Simplicity; either a positive or a negative trait for a drawing to have. It can be a strength or a weakness. When you don’t draw things exactly as they are, you have to take creative liberties. A mouth might become a single line or two. Eyes can be represented as single dots if so desired. I often don’t use a reference when I draw, and that shows when I draw things out-of-proportion or at the wrong angle. I explore every artist to use references without copying the original artist’s work. For instance, if you like how one artist draws a nose, then look closely at an example of it and draw a few studies of it, then draw it on a face without looking back at the picture. Of course, when you’re learning to draw, it’s best to use real-life examples to understand the structure of the object you’re drawing. That’s all for now. I hope this helps someone!
