♥️ 💕 ❤️ Valentine’s Day is all about taking the time to show your appreciation for your loved ones (it actually has a rich history behind it, from the Feast of Lupercalia to Saint Valentine defying unjust orders and marrying couples in secret). But, it’s 2020 🌎 So, let’s also show our love for Mother Nature this V-Day 💚 Below are some easy switches to make your day of red a little greener 🙃. . . Discover your partners love language (research online about the 5 love languages if you haven’t yet heard of it). If your partner’s main love languages aren’t receiving gifts, then it’s time to get creative and plan an activity around their love language. 💃🏼 🕺🏻 Choosing experiences over material items is a great way to make lasting memories. . . Instead of buying 💐, go outside and design a bouquet of plants (even in the coldest of places you can make a bouquet from coniferous tree branches and sticks - it will look & smell wonderful). 🌲 🌲 . . ❌ single use cards, that often have plastic coatings and get thrown out a few weeks later. Instead, write your own romantic words for your partner and share them on a piece of recycled paper, an email, or orally 💜. . . Instead of 🍫, buy 🍫 🙃. Just make sure to research and find a fair, ethical brand in paper packaging or no packaging (often found at health or bulk food stores). . . Some of my favourite Valentine’s Day memories? Spending the entire afternoon making rainbow heart cookies with hubby, waking up to thoughtful and useful surprises from my parents, spending the night watching romance movies with friends, and - of course the best one of all - being taken on a surprise skating date in a provincial park, by my now-husband, where he proposed 💍♥️ . . . . . . . #valentines #valentines_day #vday #valentine #love #anticonsumerism #experiencesoverthings #ecofriendly #lowwaste #eco #ecoblogger #ecoblog #sustainability #sustainableliving #sustainability #lovelanguage #5lovelanguages #sustainablelifestyle #lifestyleblogger #lifestyle #gogreen #gogreen💚 #lowwasteliving #lowwastelifestyle #lowwastejourney #zerowasteliving #zerowaste #zerowastegift #giftideas #gift #greensplained https://www.instagram.com/p/B8PQgBOgj-3/?igshid=1dnt1mqd0met1

[swipe left to experience my art walk]. Over the weekend I took some time for myself: I allowed myself to be creative (write poetry and take photos) and be inspired by the beauty that can be found in my community. All too often I spend the entire winter wishing I lived somewhere warm and not enjoying the winter paradise of northern Canada. ❄️ So I’ve been forcing myself to bundle up and trick myself into loving winter - and this weekend it worked!. . I was stunned by the amazing, jaw-dropping artwork that a local artist (@elmer_gunderson ) carved into the bark of living trees! [What an eco-friendly medium for artwork! ]. How amazing is it, that anyone who decides to walk on those paths gets to experience both the beauty of the outdoors AND the exquisite carvings? https://www.instagram.com/p/B8HjuI6ANs3/?igshid=2g7fswx20olr

Who says paradise has to be beside a beach? ☀️ I love waking up to a sunny, warm winter day. Comment a ❄️ if you feel the same (or am I the only crazy one- ha!). Walking through the forest, hearing the birds singing and the trees dancing in the wind🌲 So thankful to be able to experience every season in the mountains this year 💚🏔 It’s when I am out experiencing nature’s beauty, that it reminds me of my purpose. A lot of people will say that they wouldn’t want to ‘give up so much’. But I don’t see it that way. I truly love brining more sustainable habits into my life. And it’s no excuse to say that ‘you can’t do everything right’. I take it one step at a time - I mean, it’s better to do something than nothing. . Today I’m finishing up a new post for www.greensplained.com Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it 🖖. . . . . . #mountains #paradise #greensplained #green #nature #naturewalk #hiking #hikingadventures #gogreen #sustainability #sustainablelifestyle #mothernature #earth #hippie #hippievibes #zerowaste #bcblogger #bcsmallbusiness #womanownedbusiness (at Prince George, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B76uDIdAYaB/?igshid=b9m9cprmyazt

Swipe left to see the articles I wrote for my mini-series on biodegradable fabrics 👔👚👕👗👖 - Life is amazing, isn’t it? We have the ability to change our thought pattern, and re-direct our entire lives! As a child, I grew up wearing hand-me-downs from my cousins. I absolutely loved it, and would be so happy to receive a new bag of clothes. But by the time I was a teenager, I was brainwashed by the media and negative influences around me. I thought that wearing used clothes made me less of a person. I felt unworthy and ugly. I thought that exterior beauty was the highest achievement one could accomplish. Fast-fashion entered my life, but it didn’t make me any happier. - Did you know that nowadays fast fashion companies have up to 52 micro seasons a year?Meaning that something that was bought last week could already be out of fashion. - Luckily, I quickly realized the negative effect my shopping was having on other people, animals, and the health of our world. So I stopped dead in my tracks and changed overnight. I began living and purchasing intentionally. And you know what? I still receive a lot of compliments! Sure, some family members worry about my financial health when when they discover I’m a clothing thrifter and repairer. But let’s change this. This needs to be the new norm! How exciting is it, when you find just what you’re looking for at the thrift store? And if you can’t, it’s just as exciting to get to chose with your dollars to support fair brands that chose natural fibres over synthetic and don’t pollute our earth with toxic chemicals and dyes. - Let’s make 2020 the year, that just by being you, you feel beautiful. Because it’s the truth. Still wearing the same jeans for over a decade? Classic. Own jeans from the 80s/90s? Vintage chic. Purchasing new jeans from a fair, eco-friendly brand? Great work! Purchasing from a thrift store? Thank you for giving that item a second life and saving it from the landfill. - Live long and sustain 🖖 - - - - #ecofashion #ecofashionista #ecofashionblogger #biodegradable #ecofabric #endfastfashion #thrift #fairfashionblogger #repairs #bcblogger #princegeorgebc #ecoblogger #sustainable https://www.instagram.com/p/B74dpV0AXro/?igshid=16fcxkv5hdd99

Are you tired of stinky trash and using plastic bags to line your garbage cans? Food waste is what causes our garbage to rot, stink and slime (and of course if you use single use diapers and/or menstrual pads/tampons). Take a look through your trash! If a container is stinking, it’s likely likely due to a pieces of food in it. Did you know that because rotting food is so abundant in our trash, animals are diverting their natural migratory patterns so that they can visit landfills? Where they then fill their stomachs with plastic pieces they confuse with food. Since plastic isn’t digested, it fills their stomachs causing them to feel satisfied when really they are starving and malnourished. . So what‘s one habit that you can acquire that will make a major difference? Start composting! There are 3 different types of common household composting methods: aerobic, anerobic, and vermicompost. Both aerobic and anerobic are best suited for outdoor compost piles/bins. Aerobic is fast working, but also requires more maintence (every few weeks you should turn/mix the pile) vs. anerobic requires little to no maintence -  just make sure the pile is damp but not wet, and covered away from critters, then in 6-12 months you will have nutrient rich soil at the bottom of your compost. . Vermicomposting on the other hand can be done inside! And don’t worry- it won’t stink. A common spot to keep your vermicompost is under the kitchen sink - making composting easy peasy 🍋 You can also chose smaller or larger bins depending on how much compost you produce. Read more about vermicomposting on my blog: www.greensplained.com . Let me know all your compost questions in the comments below! 🌱 . . . . . #compost #vermicompost #foodwaste #gogreen #greensplained #lowdownongreen #ecoboost #sustainableliving #sustainability #sustainable #ecofriendly #eco https://www.instagram.com/p/B71lI8MgBOh/?igshid=1n7qxzaayi6ky
