Not to be that person to break the Mizumono tragedy magic, but the coat Hannibal wore after coming out of his home and the coat Will placed on Alana are two separate coats.

Here’s the props for Mizumono:

The point of Hannibal cutting Will and also killing Abigail was him literally trying to cut Will out of his life. He wanted him to feel the most intimate pain he ever knew and left him to reel in it. He wanted to move on from Will to preserve himself. Consciously at least.

He then came to Bedelia’s place to literally wash the blood off of his hands and rid himself of Will’s scent and replace it with a new one. That of Bedelia’s.

But if you ask me, subconsciously, he did a really half ass job of trying to rid himself of Will. Because if he really wanted to do it, he would’ve killed him. And if he really intended to forget him, he would’ve also gotten rid of all of the custom made clothing embroidered with his initials in them. Which he didn’t.

When I think of what Will did to Chiyoh, the phrase “Misery loves company” comes to mind.

Although Will initially came to Hannibal’s childhood home to know of his origins and to know him more intimately, when he came across Chiyoh, he found out more than he ever wanted to know. Maybe about Hannibal, but also about himself and what it made him.

Will was already miserable and frustrated with what he knew. He came across as arrogant and self righteous when he talked to Chiyoh about what he believed Hannibal had did to her, because he had experienced the same (at least from his perspective).

He had an idealized version of Abigail who was taken from him resulting in the scales to be violently ripped from his eyes and here Chiyoh was having an idealized version of Mischa in her mind with her scales still intact. By freeing Chiyoh from her duties and forcing her to confront the truth, it would more or less make them even and put them on the same playing field.

Although freeing Chiyoh could be considered an act of mercy and righteousness, it was still something done out of morbid curiosity. And although Will questions why Chiyoh would help him find Hannibal, it is exactly what he wanted by placing her in a position of obligation to him through both trauma and capture bonding. He intentionally asks her disturbing questions to keep her on edge, playing and messing with her to satiate his love for violence and to keep her under his thumb.

But unfortunately for him, he and Chiyoh didn’t have that kind of bond. They were not the same. And she did not want his company.

I know the fandom gives Hannibal a lot of shit for sending Dolarhyde after Molly and Wally, but he literally gave Will several chances to stop it from happening.

When Will accused Hannibal of nudging him towards the Blake painting at the Brooklyn Museum on a Tuesday when he knew Dolarhyde would also be there, Hannibal answered that he (and Will) who had a “sophisticated mind” knew that he would be there. In fact, in the original script, Hannibal makes it quite clear that Will is regaining his mental mojo because he’s now able to know what Dolarhyde is doing at the same time he is much like when he felt the same with Garret Jacob Hobbs.

This should have been a glaring red flag for someone as sophisticated as Will.

In the same conversation, Will deduces that the Dragon has contacted Hannibal some way and presses him to tell him who he is and who he’ll choose next. Hannibal asks him “When you close your eyes, Will, is it your family you see?”

Again, another very glaring hint. And it’s not even a hint anymore. One thing we need to understand about Hannibal is he’s the type of person to show, not tell. If you’ve ever seen Red Dragon (2002), you’ll see this mentality when Will beats around the bush and Hannibal intentionally goes off topic to show him that he’s wasting his precious and limited time. Only then does he tell him to get to the point.

The fact Hannibal is literally telling Will that his family is going to be targeted next and breaking his usual code is him being incredibly generous. And when Will accuses Hannibal of letting them die, he tells him this.

Was he going to do it anyways? Absolutely. But Hannibal has evolved past just eliminating anything and anyone in his way to Will. He needs Will to have autonomy and to be aware of it in his web of manipulation. To consciously choose a path and to want him of his own accord. Otherwise there would be no point of him being all locked up as he is.

And we all saw what choices Will made or didn’t make.
