The clearest, most-convincing contrast between Milev*n and Byler

Milev*ns like to say that Mike + El have been "built up" for 4 seasons. But they're built on a foundation of LIES.

In Season 3, they violate each other's trust. Mike lies about caring for his grandma, and El spies on him. They never resolve these issues or talk about them; instead, they paper over them with an "I love you" and a one-sided kiss.

In Season 4, Mike and El feel like they have to LIE to make their relationship work and are fake "happy" versions of themselves:

In contrast, Mike and Will feel they have to be HONEST with each other to make their relationship work. Will calls out Mike's BS and Mike owns up to it. They instinctively understand each other ("I didn't say it." "You didn't have to.") They share their fears and insecurities. They feel that they can be their TRUE SELVES with each other:

Meanwhile, Mike and El never address their issues in Season 4. Mike never explains why he expressed more concern for EL'S BULLY than for El. El never explains why she LIED about being happy in California.

To cap everything off, the act that "fixes" Milev*n – Mike's love confession – is based on a LIE that Will tells Mike...

... a lie to cover the truth that those beautiful things Mike heard in the van were not El's feelings, but WILL'S.

All this in a show whose motto is "Friends don't lie."

These are clear signals from the writers, that one relationship isn't meant to be, and the other IS.

So who do we think is being "built up" as endgame again?
