From New Orleans to Vacherie was a solid 45 minutes to an hour drive; thankfully, it was also a pretty drive…as the city gave way to more rural areas. Swamp areas that would eventually become full on bayous and houses that slowly grew in size until they were full on mansions. 

As she drove, she blasted the radio, occasionally singing along. Her music tastes tended to run towards the eclectic – emo and punk from her teenage days, pop hits that try as one might they could not deny were bops, and oldies that her dad had introduced her to growing up. It made the time pass and before she knew it, she was pulling into the long, gravel drive.

And then it hit her. Why she knew the address. She knew this place. Had lived here as a child. But after her mom…after she passed, they moved. Her dad saying something about wanting a smaller place. Closer to the city. Funny that this would be the call she took.

But then, the universe was often funny when it came to things like that. 

Climbing out of the car, she climbed the front steps, ringing the bell and then stepping back to wait. A moment passed. Maybe two. And then the front door slowly swung open to reveal…no one. Absolutely no one.

Okay…so it was gonna be one of those houses, huh? Funny. She didn’t remember any helpful poltergeist when she lived here. But then…she didn’t remember a lot from when she lived there.

Stepping inside, she called out a hello, right as the door slammed shut behind her.

“Cause why fuck with the classics, right? All right, ghostie. You got someone here…question is why….”

Danny didn’t talk about the old place often and never in great detail. Cora knew, but she and Luci had been friends since they were little girls. She’d been there for the last days in that house. Everyone else knew some of the story, but not all. They all had their secrets, their reasons for doing what they did and never pried into each others’ pasts.

“Why would she go there?” Cora asked as they drove.

A shake of his head, eyes focused on the road ahead. “I don’t know Cora. She shouldn’t have any reason. We talk about the house sometimes, but never thought about going back there.” At least, Danny had never wanted to go back there. There was too much darkness that even they couldn’t rid the house of it completely.

He wasn’t sure how much of a head start Maddy had on them, but he saw her car when they finally pulled up the drive. Climbing out, his gaze shifted over the house, the lawn, and a shudder worked its way along his spine. Danny hadn’t seen the house in person in years.

“We stay together on this one. It’s been too long that I don’t know what’s cropped up. This house tends to have shit pop up like weeds.”

Danny pulled out his cell phone, ringing his daughter’s number. Maybe she was around back. He wanted so badly for her to not be inside. Because he didn’t want to have to set foot inside.

Working in the real estate business (haunted or otherwise) means seeing and/or hearing a lot of addresses. Places going on the market, places going off the market. Places a client wants to see for a second, third, or even sixth time. (Those types of clients were the ones Madison hated the most). So when the call came in, Madison didn’t think anything of it. Yeah, the address sounded familiar but she just assumed it was because of…well, one of the above.

Why would she ever think otherwise?

And normally, she would have attempted to put off the meeting. Let them know her father was currently out at another “open house” but would call them back to set something up. After all, dealing with clients…buyers AND sellers was not her favorite part of this gig. But these people sounded so desperate that she…she caved. Told them she’d be out within the hour.

Which is how she came to be leaving her dad a message as she walked to the lot a few blocks over where her car was. 

Hey. It’s me. Just wanted to let you know I’m headed out towards Vacherie to look at a place. Sellers seem SUPER DESPERATE so you know its gotta be bad. Don’t worry. Being careful. Love you. Oh! Wait! Have we ever done anything out here before? The address sounded familiar. Anyway. Will check in after. Bye.

Some houses they dealt with were more difficult than others. The one Danny and the crew were at fell somewhere in the middle. A feisty trickster of a creature that seemed to be overly attached to any children who came into the house. Even to the point that it would go after the parents if they even raised their voices to scold. Danny felt like they were taking away a beloved pet, but once they house was cleaned, he instructed the parents to get the boy a cat or dog or even a hamster. Anything was better than ghost Fido.

During cases like this, he kept his phone on silent, needing to make sure all of his focus was on the task at hand. So once they were packed up and back outside, he wasn’t surprised to find a missed call from Maddy.

When he listened to her voicemail, he knew all the blood had drained from his face. Coraline came to his side, a hand on his shoulder and a question on her face. “Maddy’s at our old place,” he told her once he shoved his phone back into the pocket of his coat.

He was already striding to his car, Toby watching him curiously as he loaded the equipment into the trunk. “You need us come with you, boss?” 

Danny considered saying no, but he didn’t want to go alone. He didn’t know what he was going to find when he got there. “Yeah. You and Cora come with me. Shoot a line to the office to keep them on alert in case we need backup.”

He climbed into the driver’s seat, waiting for the two of them to join them as he turned over the engine. Once they were settled, he floored it, angling the car in the direction of his old home.
