"Oh, you think you're forgetting things? It will be so much worse when you're older!"

I need someone else to keep my schedule for me, and still have to choose professionals based on whether they're willing to do all three of the reminder calls necessary to make appointments possible (as in, an above 50% chance of me showing up). But, my new doctor and both my kid's schools are close enough that I can ... just show up after they call me to tell me I'm late. I just drive there, say sorry, and have a slightly shorter appointment!

Well, I lived in the moment, trying not to ever think about the future. Had disordered eating for a bit, because it kept my brain to blurry to panic. But I started auditing classes, so the lectures lost to panic attacks weren't such a big deal. I experimented with fashion. And I managed to find an academic passion and a husband during that period!

"I don't want to even THINK of hallucinations! Stop! It's freaky!"

Yeah, that was freaky. Thankfully they never came back after I stopped those meds. I could have gotten used to them, but it would have been ROUGH after I had my kid - if my husband is calling me and I ignore it, no big deal, but every diaper in the house gets coated with vaseline if you ignore the newly awoken toddler!

People look at you weird, and that sucks. Some things become harder, possibly too hard to be worth doing, and that sucks. You have to rely on others, sometimes, and that's scary and can suck.

But, did you know that you can find things funny WHILE in the middle of a panic attack? Heart racing, struggling for breath, and using up all your air to laugh at the joke your friend just said.

You can laugh at their joke even if you can't remember their name that day. You still recognize their body language, and the cadence of their speech, and that they're going to pause for a moment to see if you see how clever they are before they grin.

You can live.

seeing people my age talk about how scared they are of memory loss, which they only associate with old age, is so surreal to see as a 24 year old who has actively experienced memory loss for a long time now

there are causes for memory loss besides dementia and alzheimer’s, i hope y’all know that. dissociative disorders, trauma, brain injuries, thyroid problems, even just stress and lack of sleep can fuck up your ability to store, process, and access memory. and that’s just a few of the many causes i can think of off the top of my head right now.

please stop treating disabled people like some scary “other” that you might become only in the distant, decades-away future. we are your age, too. you may become one of us sooner than you know. stop acting like memory loss marks the end of a life, when so many of us have so much living left to do!

(Ending bittersweet and the healing still ongoing, but situation resolved. 'Unhappiness' is subjective.) Scarily accurate exploration of the justifications and fixations of an abuser. Intermixed with really thoughtful and caring comfort. And examples of the incredible strength of the person suffering. This story is SO mature and masterfully done! The characters remember what Babs dealt with during the Killing Joke, and so everyone leans on Babs to give ideas of what Tim might benefit from! It's full of little things like that - characters making decisions unique to their own history and their relationships with each other. Wonderful! (Also horrifying.)

REALLY gorgeous voice for this one. Second person POV rarely works for me, but here it adds to Tim's disconnect from himself, and the dreamlike tone. There's a LOT going on under the surface, but the story is kind and lets you float above it if you want. I strongly suggest reading the second part, as well. They build on each other. Let us actually see a bit of Jason past Tim's apathy. Stories often use sex as a stand-in to explore other concepts. This is about in-universe Tim using sex to explore other concepts. And it works really well!
