The Batak Massacre by Antoni Piotrowski c.1889 Between 3,000 and 5,000 Bulgarians were massacred in Batak during the April Uprising of 1876, which was launched to overthrow the oppressive Ottoman rule over Bulgaria. Ottoman general Ahmet Aga Barun asked the civilians of Batak to surrender and they complied. However, that did not stop Ottoman irregular army from butchering the population there.
