she nodded as he spoke, for once not interrupting and giving him the time to speak and choose what he wanted to share with her. they weren't strangers, but she knew it wasn't easy to tell someone about the kinds of things they'd seen no matter what their relationship. "i'm sorry you have to keep reliving it. our minds can be cruel to us like that." his own mind was kicking him while he was down and he didn't have any control over it. alice couldn't help but think about how unfair that was. fairness really wasn't a given in their world though. "what do you usually do when you have these dreams? how can i help?" she might not understand exactly what it was he'd gone through, but she knew the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night because of her past.

No doubt they both had but this was different, they weren't on a mission. They had gotten back from one and he had prevented her from getting some much needed rest because his own past decided to haunt him on top of the wound he was healing from. No doubt that was why it came to him, walls down as all focus had been on the wound itself. Something he would curse at himself for later. He doesn't look at her as she speaks, his hand remaining lifted to pinch at the bridge of his nose and keep his attention away from her. "I don't know about that." He mumbles, taking in a breath and wincing just a bit before she asks about his dream. It makes him freeze before letting his hand fall to his side. "It's not happy." Obviously, that was apparent. Why would a dream like that be happy? Relieving the memory of the day he lost a part of him despite what he eventually gained. "It depends." He tries to shrug but doesn't get very far with it and gives up. "Tonight was......like how it happened."

"fuck anyone who isn't us having fun right now!" alice added. sure, there were technically good people grouped into that proclamation, matt, karen, foggy, sam's sister and her's, alice's coworkers, the list went on and on, but that really wasn't the point. the point was that she and sam were having fun, being silly and pieing criminals was technically a good cause.

she wanted to prepare sam if shit went south, she didn't want to suck the fun out of what they were doing while she did it though. "just so you know, hitting people with pies is technically assault so if we get caught those are the charges we're looking at." alice shrugged. "it's minor definitely not like something a ton of people are going to take seriously though. it's pie. that being said, if you wanna put like rotten berries in the pies or something we could hit up a grocery store dumpster or something." there, she'd pointed out they were committing a crime, buuut she'd also pointed out that if they were going to commit a crime they ought to go balls to the wall.

⭑ His keys jingled slightly in his pocket with each step, so no need to try and dig around for them. Sam didn't like how much help he needed these days, but he liked hanging out with his friend ; Alice made it easy to believe that the two of them were hanging out for the sake of it and not because he needed assistance.

' Fuck cops and fuck criminals ! ' Sam beamed, bouncing a little as he walked now. His brain was ticking into overtime, whirling around. He loved helping people and being trained by other vigilantes, but it was always more fun to head into the night with Alice, it meant less instruction. They should probably stop into a dollar store or something and pick up ingredients, but he was too busy thinking about photos of crime scenes where thieves had been aprehended, covered in pie topping. His smile was vicious and full of teeth, and he briefly wondered if him and Alice had a mind link that made stuff like this so much more fun.

"oh i'll be at some dingy comedy club as soon as we get back into the city," she chuckled at her friend's comment. she couldn't help it, it was easier to try and be funny when they were in an uncomfortable situation. "yeah, i definitely get that vibe," alice didn't want to think too much into that idea or she might just start believing it. she couldn't wait to get out of here and back into civilization. "is anywhere we go ever normal though?" she deflected, as if that was comforting. she splashed a little water in the direction of lex's hands, careful not to get her shirt, before she turned her faucet off.

— ' You get funnier every day, your comedy show is soon, yes ? ' Lex sighed and bent at the waist to pull off one of her boots, frowning at the amount of stones and mud slipped down into the soles that she had to shake out. She mashed the shoe back onto her foot and cringed, following dutifully to the water and somewhat desperately scraping away the thick black line of mud under each of her nail beds. ' Right ? This place is creepy, a little like in a minute I'm gonna realise I'm in a coma and this is some dreamscape, ' she bared her teeth at the view past the edges of the tent as if she could ward it away. Honestly ? She didn't think the tents and plane debris helped; if anything, plain wilderness survival would be less... apocalypse inducing.

sam was most definitely right about the coffee. she ran on that shit, it was practically her blood at this point. if she stopped drinking coffee her exploding head wouldn't just murder everyone, it would wipe at least the entire tri-state area off the map.

"i'll accept top three, i'd even accept top five. i know a lot of people wouldn't consider the top ten an achievement at all, so ya know..." she wasn't sure she was really even top ten, and that was probably a good thing. it meant she still had something to work towards or that she was a lot more well adjusted than she thought. it all depended on how one looked at it.

that was a surprising question sam brought up. she hadn't ever thought about it. she didn't love confined spaces, and while she'd been trained to get out of various bindings the idea of being in a straight jacket made her squirm. she was surprised it wasn't part of her training to get out of one, but maybe she ought to rectify that once she went back to work.

alice shrugged, "i have no idea, it might be a while. i think i'd panic first and then once i got through that i might be able to figure it out. depending on how long i had, it would take me at least an hour probably. if i account for panic time." there were people she wouldn't admit that she would panic to, but sam wasn't one of them. she almost felt like she owed him that complete honesty too. she wanted him to understand that she wasn't the perfect agent or vigilante.

⭑   ' If you stopped drinking coffee I think your head would explode and then murder everyone in the fallout, ' Sam laughed. He thought the same would be true for so many of the vigilantes. Personally, he tried to keep it a little cooler with the caffeine, mainy drinking green tea and huge amounts of sugar to get through the night.

' You have some fierce competition, ' he hummed ; he had seen Alice's competitive nature up close and he really pitied any hero trying to beat her out. That guy who was really like four guys was probably top of the list for crazy, and he thought Wade probably had a few more screws loose, but everyone else was fair game to try and beat. His head tipped to do his best approximation of glancing at his friend and the man shrugged, ' but I reckon you have a chance to win top three at least. '

Sagely, he nodded his head. A padded room would be like being a bouncy ball in a trampoline park – hellish – but he would follow Alice into one and try to break her out. Sam squinted his eyelids, ' how long do you think it would take you to get out of a straight jacket ? '

she'd kept her phone on the table in front of her, hoping for a quick reply. just about everyone had plans today, she wouldn't be surprised if he did. she'd be a little bit offended if he didn't want to hang out but it probably wouldn't stick. she leaned forward watching the text bubbles until his message popped up.

she lifted her phone and was about to reply when the bubbles popped up again. the second reply was much more satisfactory. alice smiled and sent back:

[ MSG : jake ] that i am

[ MSG : jake ] i'm not too picky if you wanna go somewhere or i got a pretty nice hotel room here if you wanna come over.

the buzz of his phone was enough to rouse jake from the semi-comfortable nap he'd been enjoying on his couch a moment prior, and he reached for the device with a groan.

[ MSG: alice ] you could say i was, but not anymore. why?

swinging his feet off of the couch and propping himself up, jake raked a hand through unkempt hair before firing off another text. anticipating he might be leaving the house soon enough, he shifted locations to his room for a bit to freshen up and find a more presentable outfit.

[ MSG: alice ] you looking for company or something?

alice walked alongside him, generally looking up at him, but occasionally scanning her surroundings. she'd come to trust him for the most part, but she still liked to have some idea of where she was going and where she was in relation to where she had been. she couldn't help but be amused by his question. "i could tell you, but then i wouldn't get to see you wandering around confused." he'd be her translator so if she had to tell him she would. but she'd keep it a surprise for as long as possible though. "you can try and guess while we shop though," she suggested.

A chuckle left the Romanian as he nods, glad to know that wouldn't be an issue. That and the fact she went along with his tease. "Well, that's good then." Andrei replies as he moves to get up. "Yeah I can do that." He motions for her to follow, leaving his own side of the compound that served as his living area and out into the hall to go towards the kitchen. He made sure to keep his pace slow enough for her to keep up, knowing his gait was a little large for most. "I mean, are you going to tell me what it is or a hint?" He asks as they make a turn to go down another hall. "Because I have a feeling I'll just be holding everything confused."

alice followed the lawyer back into his office. she gave it a look around, not so much worried about security as much as she was just plain curious what a guy like him had in his space. it seemed pretty normal except for a god awful painting on the wall, but alice wasn't going to judge. she was pretty sure some people really hated the art in her office too.

alice raised an eyebrow at the suggestion this visit might be about one of their associates. that was a pretty massive jump to make, especially since she assumed they probably knew some of their clients were shady here. wouldn't it be preferable that a client be the cause of her investigation and not the firm itself?

"well, i hope none of your associates have been dragged into this mess, but if they are i'll let you know." alice could sit, she knew that, but instead she leaned her palms on the back of the chair she assumed harvey's client had just vacated.

she looked up at the lawyer, meeting his gaze directly as she spoke. "mr. spector, one of your clients, doctor tara white and her company are under investigation. i'm here on behalf of SHIELD to let you know that if we find out your firm is involved in any way, we will be investigating the firm as well. i know you can't break privilege, but we'd appreciate your cooperation to the best of your ability."

harvey blinked, mustering up as polite of a smile as he could manage, before taking to his feet and beginning to usher the older man out of his office. after what felt like nearly an hour, his client was finally finished speaking.

“ alright, mr. mcnamara — donna will be in touch. thank you. take care. ”

with a hand on his shoulder, harvey led the man in question a bit further past donna’s desk and directed him to the elevators at the end of the hall. making sure he was out of earshot before speaking, donna let out a snort, “ he’s certainly a chatty cathy—- by the way, you’ve got a visitor. ” but before she could explain the situation any further, the blonde was already on her feet and approaching.

SHIELD. great.

his mouth parted to question her title ( she did look a bit young for such a position ), before a badge was presented to him — it appeared to be legit, as far as harvey could tell.

he glanced at donna for a moment, who gave him a confused shrug, before gesturing for the young woman to join him in his office.

“ i hope this is an incorrect assumption, miss gallagher, but this wouldn’t be about any of our associates, would it — ? ”
