so! what do i think makes a font family neurodivergent / dyslexia friendly and / or accessible to low-vision persons?

i think a font is visually accessible if it passes the tests of:

no-exact-mirror-letters [ b d p q ]

distinguishable-vertical-bar-characters [ 1 I l i ]

and also very very importantly: i find it at least aesthetically tolerable 😅😉

which btw @staff the default tumblr True Blue color scheme uses a font that fails both of these tests — UPDATE: test failure for every color scheme's default font when using the ios app (side note: we need a dark mode for the queer pride color scheme)

UPDATE: i just tested all color schemes on my chromebook -- Vampire theme has a default font (combined with a tolerable-to-my-eyes low-light compatible color scheme) that passes these readability tests in the chrome browser but i don't know about any of the other browsers *shruggie*

some context:

so while i was working on research (motivated by @flamingwell 's post) about ways to make my podfics accessible for hearing-impaired fandom friends, i got to thinking about how i often struggle to read lovingly made podfic covers and painstakingly created fandom-themed gifsets and text post memes here on our beloved hellsite. and so i was inspired to try and raise awareness amongst the podficcers making cover arts and the magicians making gifsets & memes! about webdesign standards regarding visual accessibility

btw! if you're tracking this, my research and experimentation with how i personally can make my podfics more accessible to those with biomechanical and/or neurological hearing challenges is still in progress, but you can read more about what i've learned so far here!

a final consideration re font choices: don't be afraid to use Big Font Sizes and Use Up Some Space in your text overlay visual arts! especially for the most important information; WCAG standards recommend 18 point font size for easier readability (or a 14pt bolded font)

TLDR--what i am asking for people to do when designing podfic covers and gifsets (well. really any artwork with a text overlay on an image) is to choose the font color and immediately surrounding background color to have a high contrast ratio (3:1 min for headers and 4.5:1 min for smaller fonts) AND to use dyslexia friendly fonts. pretty pretty please!

Switched Career AU

I’m aware the name sounds like a sims expansion pack I’ll fix it later

So i got this idea when i was thinking about how younger me misunderstood Alice in the first episode.

I thought that when she said “country boy” she meant he was a cowboy. And i thought this for like a whole year.

And then i thought “What if he was a cowboy?” But thats too easy and boring + They already kinda did that in s4. Not really but close enough (i have enough memes of Cowboy Clay locked an loaded anyway so i think I’ll survive) So i continued thinking and remembered from the Knights code how Clay said a certain sword was easy enough a child could make it. And i just started assuming he must have some knowledge in weapon making. Cuz why not? and also! I didnt neglect the other knights for this project! THATS A FIRST!

I gave them minor redesigns, nothing too mayor but still something. (also all of this is pre-knights academy. So they’re like 15 or sum)

Yet again, just playing with the idea that he works as a blacksmith, providing for him an his brother.

I somehow thought out more for Aaron than Clay??? Big things are happening in Detroit ngl

And for Merlok: guess he just never found him. Or he died. Idk I’ll figure something out later.

Oh and since Merlok couldn’t find him he just kinda grew into his powers, and so did Fletch. They dont know much tho about it and just use it as some sort of minor day to day tool. But they haven’t trained it so its just still kinda uncontrollable at times, remaining heavily linked to emotions. (All of this still in very early development dont come for me)

I have no clue what Aaron’s dad works as but i just made him a fisherman.

Aaron still craves danger, but the danger of fishing (cuz that shit can be real fucking dangerous let me tell ya that-)

He’s still too younge tho, but he can’t stop talking about it, and how much he wish he could join his dad on his boat (He has snuck on on several occasions but turns out hiding under deck during a storm isn’t a good idea. The only reason he stopped was cuz he’d miss out on the fun part regardless) Him and Clay are friends, meeting every now and again when Clay and Fletch come and buy fish from his family.

He’s been very excited about taking over the restaurant, already having a plethora of dishes he wants to make (and eat ofc).

He’s friends with Aaron, given they also buy fish from his family. He’s not very familiar with Clay tho. They’ve been at the fish market at the same time once or twice but barely talked. But they still see each other as friends, just not very close

Macy is still, Macy ig? I’m not sure what to do with her. So i just made King Halbert more chill. She takes several combat classes and planning on becoming a fighting queen if anything.

Her and her family are going on a trip through out the kingdom with the Richmonds. On her end its more of a meet and greet thing, but it’s different for Lance.

OG Lance must be quite jealous. He was sent into the acting industry at a very young age. He thrives in it, taking role after role back to back.

However this next one requieres some sort of reference with the commoners. He joins Macy’s family (Bringing his agent and Dennis with him obv.) as they travel through the country sides of the kingdom. He honestly can’t wait to go home and take a dip in the gold pool.

Idk why this thing kinda makes me sad but oh well, it’s the truth after all.

I am planning on writing this. Like fanfic wise.

But whenever that’ll be out is a mystery.

I haven’t written a fanfic since my wattpad days and AO3 still lowkey scares me.

Also other than Fletch so am i not sure what to do with Ava, Robin or Izzy. So if ya have any ideas, please share, i have no clue.

Project Thunder: Renata

We start with Tulip and Alice (mostly Tulip since she's the one with the weapon and Alice is a cell phone) dealing with a massive swarm of Twilight who are close to totaling the Van. They're about ready to accept their fate when the sound of a powerful engine roars, a heavy wind whips up, and spotlights hit the battlefield directly on top of Tulip, which actually causes the Twilight to back off a bit. As a large shape (obscured since Tulip would have to look directly into the spotlight to see it) descends, two voices call out over a loudspeaker;

"Prepare for trouble!"

"And make it double!"

Yep. The first ones to find her were Team Rocket. They're using a cargo plane that's been fitted with hover jets and painted to look like a Pelipper, and once their motto's done their full teams descend upon the horde, kicking ass and taking names, assisted by weapons that were also fitted to the plane and Tulip once she recovers, who is completely perplexed by this situation but not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Also, we find out during the action sequence that Road Rage (Tulip's Keyblade) can Formchange into an actual fully functioning motorcycle. That can still cast magic. And will be able to drive up and along walls once Sora has a chance to teach her Flowmotion.

Once the enemies have been cleared out enough for the plant to land, the group (and the Van) moves inside and makes a clean getaway. Yes the plane is big enough to carry around a whole RV. After they take off again and start heading towards the nearest group from the rest of the rescue party, Tulip is reintroduced to Team Rocket, who can explain the full situation better than Alice was able to since unlike her they were around during the buildup and got their own explanation from Ash when he recruited them.

Good news, between what Alice has told her and Pokemon apparently being real now Tulip decides to believe them for now. Bad news, they forgot to grab some of the supercharged Memes when the groups split up so they can't cure her until they get to their destination. They eventually reach Laharl, who's just finishing up slaying one of Renata's Bosses alongside FM, X and Minion, and is very excited when she sees that Tulip is okay... and a bit pissed about Team Rocket's stupid mistake. Tulip seeing this crazy (and admittedly pretty cute) girl in a trademarked Styx Apparel jacket when Tulip (as far as she knows) hasn't actually had a chance to do anything with said trademark what with living on the road both before and after the Twilight so there can't possibly be any bootlegs gets rid of the few doubts she still had.

And when she actually takes the meme, she pulls Laharl into a model-crushing hug because she knew her memories were real she knew it she knew it she knew it! (...yeah she's probably gonna need some therapy after this) Also once she's done with that she notices her redesign with newly Memed eyes and, rather than having an issue with it like the others, decides that she looks good, her new hairstyle in particular.

Anyway, the crews in Renata are Laharl's (except for Flonne, who's using her giant mech in the code-level battle alongside the Squirle Squad), Ash's, Sora's, Shantae's, Olimar's, and Frida's, along with a few characters from other Alliance universes. 7 and 10 aren't there because 7 is still in the hospital. They've been hunting the Bosses and searching for Tulip, and by the point where Tulip comes in they're mostly done. They just need to deal with the last remaining boss, a massive, corrupted semi truck with way too many trailers that wanders the map in a winding loop like a demented train. Everybody meets up to deal with it, and that's where the section rather awkwardly ends since the rest of what happens is an action setpiece.

...Actually that's not quite accurate. There is one important thing that happens during that fight, which is that at one point Tulip nearly fucking dies and Alice somehow becomes a Porygon to save her. no idea how that works but there it is.

I watched The Boy and the Heron yesterday with two friends and they enjoyed it but described it as a "fever dream acid trip," and that wasn't my experience at all. I asked them a few questions and realized they had completely missed that it was set in a real, historical setting and thought it was in... fantasy Japan??? So below is my spoilery notes on context that they missed.

Disclaimer that I've only seen it once, dubbed, and while I grew up in Japan and have done research on Japanese clothing, I am not Japanese.

Setting: Fire bombing sirens going off especially while men are sleeping in kimono but wearing western clothes in public = WWII Japan. The setting was instantly obvious to me despite thinking this was going to be a fantasy setting. This is further reinforced by the parades, rationing, and teachers and children being voluntold/conscripted for tasks. Mahito is very privileged to not be conscripted, probably why he gets yelled at by the other student.

Hunger and eating of sentient beings: There are constant themes of hunger in this movie, both in real life and in the fantasy realm. WWII was a very hungry time for Japanese civilians and soldiers, with many people slowly starving to death. There are even documented cases of cannibalism. This had a massive impact on Japanese culture. The desperate pelicans and fascist-coded budgies eating people are Very On Point.

Lady Himi: I haven't been able to find kanji for her name, but you could understand her name to mean Looks Like Fire (I don't speak Japanese well, so grain of salt there). I also desperately want Sewstine to make her outfit. Super Alice In Wonderland and Firebird vibes.

Natsuko (step-mother): Her name means summer child. I think it's a relatively common name in Japanese, but all I can think of is the Game of Thrones meme. It was awesome to see her shoot a bow in the dream(?) sequence since her signature kimono has yagasuri arrow/fletching patterns on it. A popular motif for recent brides. Mahito making a fletched arrow as she stops wearing her kimono was interesting symbolism. Also, hella wealthy. Her family home being that fancy and That Big, with a whole western style house, much less an Omnious Tower. So wealthy.

Kiriko: Be still my bisexual heart. Older her has access to bows and arrows and younger her is a BAMP with a soft spot for kids. Ox cart wheels like the ones on her kimono have complex symbolism, but a common motif is for them to be submerged in a stream when not in use to prevent warping. Her living on a boat and providing rides to Mahito makes her motif have extra depth. It also implies to me that she's constantly in motion and not resting in a stream.

2. Have you read any of the novelizations?

Most of them! I'm still reading The Final Chapter. I didn't know until I moved on from Extinction that Afterlife never got one? The last two are written by different authors than the first three, but I still find that odd.

Anyway! There are parts I like. Actually knowing what happened to Angie, how the the quick spread of the virus across the globe is described, getting names/surnames for characters that never got any in the films, the way Matt's consciousness lives in Nemesis is kinda neat to see, etc. But I have a bone to pick with DeCandido for his characterization of Rain in Genesis. Actually, for most characters.

But I'll talk about Rain specifically because I never shut up about her. Yes, she has bite. A lot of it, but she's also the woman who threw herself into a horde of zombies to try and save J.D., willingly stayed behind to hold the grate so Kaplan so climb to safety, got bit trying to help a woman she thought was injured, immediately asked Matt and Alice if they were okay when they rejoined everyone, and tried to sacrifice herself without hesitation for the door code. She's a protector at her core not entirely out of duty, but because there is warmth and care behind the bitchy exterior. I don't get that vibe in Genesis. I get more of Bad Rain vibe tbh.

Also bitter that the dynamic between her and Alice feels so empty there. And that he somehow made her death scene bland when in the film, it always makes me sad lol. I think the characterization and bland energy is a problem throughout every novel so far. Even the John Shirley Retribution one. Although, I do appreciate the very tiny Rain/Alice scraps provided and inclusion of the third Rain clone.

16. Underrated character?

This is tough because I care way too much about the majority of the characters in these flicks. Tempted to pick a character with one to no lines of dialogue, but I'll restrain myself.

I'll say Angela Ashford. Even the writers didn't care much. She vanished into thin air after Apocalypse without so much as a mention, and then her whole plot important thing with the T-virus got retconned in The Final Chapter. I also don't see her people talk about her as much as the other kids Alice basically adopted (K-Mart and Becky), though I partially think that's because they really wanted to make Alice into the Terminator and went in a little too hard with the emotional detachment there. Why do I get to see AUs where Becky lived and none where Angie lived? Her degenerative condition would start effecting her again without the virus/antivirus doses, but why not explore that? I want to, actually.

24. Worst death scene?

Not sure if it really counts since there is no scene to accompany it, but that's the problem I have. Jill, Ada, Becky, and Leon getting killed off screen in the destruction of the White House at the beginning of The Final Chapter. I mean, poor Jill just got free from Umbrella's mind control after who knows how long and then you're gonna blow her up? Off screen? Disrespectful, honestly. I don't even care for Movie Leon and I'm still annoyed by it.

At the very least, in the novelization, we get to see their demises. Except Becky. She lives :)

If I have to pick something with an actual scene attached, I'll say Wesker's in The Final Chapter because that shit was lame as hell. Game Wesker? Gets blown up after falling into a volcano. Movie Wesker? Motherfucker gets killed by a door.

Yes, there are more Space-verse fics planned! I did have a one-shot for the 12 kisses meme I was attempting started but I decided it's boring and I hate it, so we're back to the drawing board for the next part.

I have a one-shot for Rose outlined because I went and made Rose more miserable in this universe but also this absolute badass? I've done a little work on Alice's origin story and why her kind are so hated. Obviously Bella's waiting in the wings for her moment to appear. And we can't have a high-stakes AU without Aro making trouble.

In Space-verse, Maria was essentially a terrorist; she has a similar history to Jasper with Synths and basically turned to extreme violence and propaganda to recruit her crew. More of this will come up in future installments but the Monterrey was caught, the crew charged, and Maria and Jasper were sentenced to prison for a time. Jasper got out on parole with hefty fines and heavily restricted options, but Maria's always plotting.

Maria will definitely run into the Olympia crew. The Monterrey is currently inaccessible to Maria, and it would be a real shame if only one member of her old crew had the unlock codes...

I'm genuinely on the fence about the Synth that murdered Jasper's father. I'm still working on the wider timeline for this 'verse, and whether her return fits into it. Jasper definitely still has nightmares about that night, but he's now a 6ft+ grown man with military training and access to some pretty intense weapons. And his not-girlfriend is professionally trained in murder, so I honestly pity anyone who thinks they can harm Jasper at this point.

I think the next installment is going to be returning to Edward's family home, and seeing the Denali crew. This is the plan right at this moment, at least.

I have nothing satisfying from that universe to share; most of it is in dot points or paragraph snippets, I'm sorry! But we persevere with Space-verse, just slowly!

I had an odd dream the other night, in which there was a fanfic website that was dedicated to taking the concept of the gift economy way too far.

So, at first glance, the site looked fairly normal. It took the open-source code from AO3 and based itself off of that, though the default site skin was dark pink comic sans on a light yellow background. The difference was that there was an in-site way of commissioning authors. Not for money - the site was as against monetizing fanfic as the average (reasonable) fanfiction website is.

Instead it had something called either CommentBux or FicBux (I'll use the latter from now on bc that's shorter). You'd earn one FicBux if you left a kudo on the author's work, and another FicBux for every 10 words you left in a comment. There was a plagiarism checker so you couldn't just quote the fic when commenting, emojis didn't count, and I'm not sure if words rolled over from one comment to the next. FicBux were separated by each author, because they were used for commissions.

10 FicBux = 100 words that you could commission from the authors. Authors couldn't turn commission requests off, but they could

Change "prices" from the default.

Report harassing commissioners.

Reject commissions.

Accept requests and refund them later (but not after publishing!), but there was a 3-day wait time between doing so.

Set it so that readers couldn't request fandoms, characters, ratings (not rated wasn't an option on the website), relationships, archive warnings, or additional tags beyond what you had already written.

Readers, on the other hand, could report authors for not writing what was requested (within reason, which is to say the staff/volunteer got to decide what they wanted). They could also cancel the commission any time before the author finished, but they then couldn't request from that author for another 7 days.

Authors wouldn't be able to publish a commissioned fic until they reached the word count, but they could offer a partial refund. However, the commissioner would have to accept this before the author could publish. If an author went more than 33% over the paid word count, a warning would pop up, and if they went more than 66% of the paid word count they couldn't publish the fic.

Due to the way the site was putting the economy into the gift economy, they got rid of prompt memes and gift exchanges as well as regular old gifts for non-"paying customers". Sure, you could write in your author's note that this was a fic written for your friend Alice's birthday without actually gifting it to her because she didn't pay you, but it was frowned upon.

like literally i dont think any one piece of media has ever made me so joyful! It just just so beautiful. Visually its so pretty, thematically it toes (tows?) the line of realistic and comforting really well (at least for me), the acting is incredible - especially considering the age of the actors, and the constant unapolagetic queerness that is so obvoiusly written by queer people is so refreshing and just .. nice to see. Nick saying 'im bi, actually' so many times was heartwarming and - as someone who is bi themself - it was so nice to see that the only time the usual bi stereotypes were presented was through nicks anxiety (and also ben). I am so scared to see where they take nick's self worth in regards to his 'similarities' to ben bc i don't want to see him sad. I had already read the comics so it was so cool to see how effective this adaptation is continuing to be. the final few scenes of episode 6 have altered me as a human being and are like a visual form of pure nostalgia and comfort. the taylor song in there is so gorgeous. and speaking of songs the entire soundtrack was perfect (like they understand the vibe and the target audience) and had me doing the leo dicaprio pointing meme constantly. I also watched both seasons several times in the last few weeks and probably will rewatch for the rest of my life tbh. I cannot wait for the next season. anyway yea

I 100% agree I just watch this show or read the comics and I am smiling uncontrollably and just feel so warm and comforted and happy it's insane!! It's so beautiful to see something that feels so genuine and it's awkward but sweet and even seeing the changes and growth of all the characters from season 1 to season 2 feels so realistic!

Nick Nelson saying "I'm bi, actually" about seven times in S2 is literally so accurate and I felt so validated by that because it's so real (also as a fellow bisexual) to have to continually justify your sexuality depending on who you're in a relationship with. The queer rep is just wonderful and can I just say that Isaac's journey this season was one of my favourites and the way I screamed when he went back into the library and claimed the ace book at the end 🤌

Anyone who hurts Nick Nelson or makes him feel sad must endure my wrath! I want to put him in my pocket and protect him from all the sad in the world he is so sweet and caring and kind to Charlie, I hate seeing him compare himself to Ben but I love the way they showed that yes the situation was similar but he was so different because he cared about how his coming out made Charlie feel too and they literally talked and communicated, it was fucking beautiful.

And the whole hickey shenanigans from Charlie noticing it (or lbh from when Buck gave it to him) was so funny and realistic and just that episode was perfection (I'm saying this like all episodes weren't 😅)

The Taylor song scene literally did things to my heart, I felt that scene physically, and you are so right the whole soundtrack is perfect! I mean, Taylor aside you have girl in red, Conan Gray, Gabrielle Aplin, wolf Alice, Holly humberstone, Miya folick like so many more I am obsessed with the soundtrack! And have you listened to the "to Nick from Charlie" playlist based on the mixed tape from vol 1? It's literally also a vibe and has Hayley kiyoko (my beloved) and Troye Sivan (I was JUST SAYING that his blue neighbourhood album is so heartstopper coded and wild is one of the tracks 😭)

Read more comic (trying to spread it out so I get more but I am failing)

Constantly think about all of them until I fall asleep
