“Does the braiding hurt, Ma’ Narlor?” The older woman asked, voice along the cusp of a murmur. It reminded the little girl of the tender sway the long grass danced, just outside the jungle and into the meadow of mid-autumn.

“No, Sa’nu,” Narlor replied with a cute shake of her head, few braids followed with it. “Your hands are gently,” she implored, hands twiddled in her lap to find something to do.

Sethunya hummed with a twinkle in her eye, delighted her daughter could withstand a few tugs her fingers deftly made. “You know,” she starts, grasping an unfinished braid to finish off the end, “Your brother is much too tender-headed for this.” The mother revealed, exhaling in a laugh when Narlor giggled alongside her — pleased to learn another embarrassing weakness of her older sibling.

“That why Tsmukan always has his hair wild?” Narlor asks between her continuous laugh, the sound a soft jingle.

“Yes — that’s why O’awve’s hair is wild,” Sethunya affirms, shushing her daughter mockingly when the eldest boy walks in, utterly confused at what could possibly have Narlor hugging her stomach and pointing at him.
