Displacement Maps
Image used for displacement map task:

Create new layer and desaturate colours in layer:
Adjust levels of desaturated layer to add more contrast and shadows.
Add text:
Right click on text layer and click ‘rasterize type’:
Filter > Distort > Displace
Copy the background layer and place it above the text layer then double click the layer:
(Colour of image changed to red for the purpose of this task)
Move the sliders to the left to blend the text into the image.
Different texts will have different effects as the text I used still has an unusual distortion to it therefore thicker texts would work better.

HDR
Some examples of when HDR has been used effectively:

The above images have more information in both the highlights and shadows due to HDR, the images (excluding the b&w one) have a wide range of colours and tones in them that work effectively together to create the overall image.
Bad example of HDR:

As seen above HDR can be taken too far where there’s a lot of contrast and clarity, the over saturated colours don't work well with the image and the sky looks very unrealistic.

Paper Movies Research Task
1. What is the significance to us of the ‘Photographic Journey’ in three decades from the 1950′s
Over the three decades a range of advancements and discoveries were made to photography. Due to the current events at the time, photographers were inspired to explore different avenues of photography such as documentary photography.
2. Joel Sternfeld is seen using what type of camera? Why would he be using this instead of digital?
Joel Sterneld appears to be using a 10 x 8″ large format camera. He uses this as it allows him to really focus on what he is capturing by planning the image beforehand to enable him to capture the exact image he wants.
3. Why has Robert Frank’s book ‘The Americans’ had such an impact on modern photography? What ‘narrative’ is pervasive throughout his book?
Robert Frank explores what in his opinion, America is like as a country, he does this through street photography. He revealed the truth behind America through abstract images and beat poetry.
4. William Klein had one particular photographic outlet for the expression of his photography - How would you describe his attitude to photography?
He has no fear when it comes to photography, he will challenge and provoke people until he gets the reaction/expression he is looking for.
5. What made Joel Meyerowitz reject Henri Cartier Bresson’s decisive moment concept for his New York Street Photography?
Henri had a very peaceful, quiet approach to photographing New York however Joel had the complete different approach as he was full of energy and took advantage of every moment and situation.
6. Iconic NY street photographers Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus & Lee Friedlander and English photographer, Tony Ray Jones who was heavily influenced by the above noted the key pointers to being a successful street photographer... Can you list them...
- Get closer to the subject
- Be patient
- interact/speak to the subject
- Take simpler photos
- Don’t take boring pictures
7. Why have British ‘street photographers’ gravitated to the beach as an ideal location for their subject matter?
The beach was the British equivalent to the streets in NY as the beach is constantly busy with countless spontaneous situations.
8. ‘Surface rather than soul’. What does that mean to you?
Capturing the exterior of the subject in a way which allows you to find out more about their soul/personality.
9. The road trips of Stephen Shore & Joel Sternfeld, Your observations.....
He was able to make the most basic of things interesting such as everyday items (beds, people, paintings etc.) Used colour to his advantage and showed the importance of colour.
10. Why would William Eggleston be regarded by photographers as ‘king’?
He used specific colour schemes for certain subjects and or to suggest something that resulted in memorising images. ‘I am photographing life today’ .

Environmental Portrait
For my environmental portrait I went up to the 10th floor of the college and spoke to a lecturer who gave me permission to come into his class and photograph one of his students who was a jewellery maker. Although there wasn’t a lot of space in the studio I feel as if I was still able to show the subject and his workspace.
The student’s workspace was right next to room height windows which was beneficial as there was a lot of natural light that enabled me to achieve deep shadows which made the overall image more interesting.

Environmental portrait
I found this brief very challenging as I don't know anyone who fits the brief (artists etc.) therefore I will be going to the arts department in the college to see if I am able to take a portrait of one of the artists in their own workspace.
Research
Below are some images that I took inspiration from for my environmental portrait. In each image the subject is either in the centre of the image or positioned slightly off centre and the subject is looking into the lens and are either amongst their artwork/work space or are carrying out work. I aim to position the subject in a way that you can clearly see their work whilst building a connection between the subject and the camera through composition and eye contact.

Brand Archetype Research
For my brand archetype I aim to use title boxing gloves and create a street fighting scenario by making my background image an empty car park. For the portrait part of this brief I will have the model wearing the boxing gloves and have him standing in typical boxing positions. The model will be topless to avoid distraction from the boxing gloves and emphasise his muscles creating a strong, powerful image.

Something New Research
For the something new brief I will be using my beats solo 3 as the product. I will be a shooting a clean and simplistic product shot and will be using string or fishing wire to get the ‘floating’ effect. As the brand is beats headphones I hope to follow a similar style of how they advertise their headphones.
