Ow ohhh ow yeah that’s my heart-shaped object breaking into a million pieces. Genuinely great analysis, like after reading it I think I’ve fallen more in love with Deltarune that’s how good. Made me think of how when Spamton approaches Tenna in Chapter 3, it’s when Tenna is at his lowest. His employees are quitting, his game show is on fire, he’s no where near the Big Shot he once was. You’d think after hating on the cathode so much Spamton might use his one chance to interact with him to insult him, espically since he’s basically met the same fate Spamton did, the one Spamton seems to blame on Tenna. But other than lightheartedly calling him trash-heap, he doesn’t. At first it felt a bit out of character to me, but I think it makes sense if you remember how one of Spamton’s defining character traits is his desperation. Before it might have been his desperation to get Big again or to be Free, but he seems to change his view to Friendship a bit at the end of the NEO fight. Like don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we beat him and we made him do a complete personality 180, more I think he just came down to earth again for a bit (I mean literally with the wings breaking). Still a scummy business man, but he’s off that high yknow. Maybe for once instead of comparing his lot to another’s, he could just recognize Tenna’s situation and relate.

Can we talk about how much Spamton must have actually cared for Tenna? It’s hard to imagine the spiteful little man cares about anyone, but it actually seems like he did at one point. If you go through the S-rank minigames, you’ll know Spamton seemingly was going to give Tenna the secret behind his success, of what made him a Big Shot. Spamton is the greediest, most self-centered creature known to man, and yet he was willing to tell Tenna that? Actually insane. Not to mention the Tropics of Love or the entire room just for fan mail. Also I know a lot of the Spamton Tenna divorce stuff is mostly a meme but given that the Spamton Sweepstake wedding ring page links to a thing about Tenna and that Spamton possesses an item called the Thorn Ring, can we be so sure it is a joke? Your honor I rest my case

Gerson reminds me so much of my Jewish great grandfather so I may be biased when I say this, but he feels very Jewish coded to me. Like firstly, his name is Gerson, a Hebrew name. Then, we have the scarf he wears on his shoulders, which looks a lot like a more simple, non-traditional tallit

Obviously he’s not actually Jewish as Deltarune has its own religion, but I see a lot of people just equating that religion directly to Christianity which I think can limit analysis and theory crafting. Deltarune takes a lot of stuff from Christianity sure, but it’s not as cut and dry as just Christianity 2 Electric Boogaloo. It’s nice to see some traditions from different religions were also represented, like with the Guei or incense burning, and it’s interesting what these elements may say about the story’s greater themes. Hell, even the angel of death Azrael is mostly a Jewish and Islamic figure if I remember correctly

The writing part makes sense if your think about how Gerson is supposed to be an author, and his son runs the Church which is most likely the location of chapter 4’s Dark Fountain. Perhaps his works were translated to multiple different languages?

as for the new darkner, it seems like they're visually based on the chinese character their name is a pun on — 鬼. i'm wondering if the object they are is related to writing in some way, given that a lot of the other darkners are visually based on what they are in a literal sense (spades king is shaped like a spade as is lancer, queen has a computer mouse for a head, sweet cap'n cakes are all music players, ect.) it would make sense for a writing-inspired darkner to be based on a literal written character. there's also the obvious ghost aspect, what with the meaning of the character itself and the exorcism pun, but i feel that's more like how the tasques are cats or how spamton is a puppet. meaningful, but not so literal as to be what they are as objects in the light world. (though i suppose that means this could all be applied in reverse, and the ghost aspect is what the object is after all..?)

i know i love on shadowstar a lot but add karlach in and that’s my IDEAL throuple.

neither of them are the sharing type but shadowheart will get what she wants and if it’s both of them, so be it. she gets her charming dark prince and her rambunctious knight in flaming armor, neither of them could possibly deny their princess of the other.

and i do think astarion and karlach have some potential as well… astarion being used for his body and desensitized to physical touch while karlach craves it desperately, both of them having experience with exploitation in different forms… karlach would be pretty much immune to any of astarion’s “gain your trust, sleep with you, discard when convenient” tricks because she’s just so genuine and kindhearted. she’d give her blood to him no-strings if she could, she’d politely decline his advances in fear of hurting him, etc. she might be more brawn than brains, but any time astarion makes some offhanded comment about just ignoring things or putting up with stuff that’s uncomfortable, she’d stop him and give him those sweet puppy dog eyes, tell him “sorry that happened, fangs, you didn’t deserve that” then offer to go out breaking shit to get the bad thoughts off his mind

they would understand each other in a way that shadowheart can’t entirely grasp, and maybe their need for companionship with one another is just as strong as shadowheart’s love for them both

A theory on our much forgotten Poppy

Spoilers for the new Welcome Home update below the cut

So... That Brick-by-Brick book

Where do I even start. The neighbors obviously care for Poppy, Sally especially. She wants Poppy in her play, she wants her to be her star! In The Telltale Heart no less, we'll be getting back to that later... However, while Sally cares for Poppy, she doesn't at first consider her friend's needs. Poppy obviously has some sort of anxiety disorder, so being the star of a play would most certainty be a nerve-wracking thing for our dear bird. Especially in such a frighting play! When Sally realizes the worry that her mere request must have put her friend through, she panics! She over corrects. It's not enough to tell Poppy she doesn't need to be in the play, no, we must lock Poppy away for her own good! Yes, the mere sound of such a terrifying play might just scare her feathers off, she'll be much more content in a... dark... enclosed space... You see the problem here?

These pages are horrifying to me. The way that after Poppy is sealed up the audio is cut off, I'm scared to think what it would have sounded like if it hadn't. And then we just... Don't see Poppy again. For the rest of the book. It ends with her still locked in there. In fact, she barley appears at all in the rest of the update. And it made me think, haven't we seen this before? Or, better said, haven't we not seen this before?

It really stood out to me during the Awayfrompryingeyes updates how little Poppy appeared. Where was she at the Homewarming party? She's there at the beginning, when Eddie is pouring gravy on his tree. And then she's there with Julie for one of the title cards. But other then that, no Poppy, unless I'm mistaken. So that's 2 time she's gone missing now in just the last 2 updates. What is going on? And why is no one talking about it? Well, I think that second part is purposeful.

You see, the 2 times Poppy has 'gone missing' was in updates that were largely centered around other characters. First Eddie, and then Julie. Something else I noticed is that while Eddie and Julie both have their feelings acknowledged by a character in these updates (notably both times by Frank, maybe that means something too but that's not what this theory is about-), Poppy is just sort of forgotten about altogether. The fact that she isn't there is never brought up. Just how the fandom forgets about her - a purposeful choice by PartyCoffin I'm presuming.

Looking into the future, I think that's where Poppy's arc is going to go. Being forgotten is already a huge theme in Welcome Home. The show was forgotten, Wally is struggling to come back from non-existence, Eddie feels forgotten on Homewarming. But the most forgotten character is the one who we don't even acknowledge is forgotten. Others like Sally may care about Poppy, but when she get into one of her worry moods it's just easier for them to distnace themself from her. She'll be better off that way, right?

If we get a Poppy update, I have a feeling she's going a completle breakdown. We may even see back into her bricked off house, and hear a Telltale Heartbeat similar to how we did with Eddie...

Anyone else notice in the new Welcome Home update that the flowers used to decorate the pie Poppy and Julie made are the same as the belladonna card we saw in the Floriography game? Y'know, horribly toxic to eat belladonna?? Julie now being established as bringing the flowers into bloom, you think she'd know that... Poppy saying to share it with everyone is also suspicious... Might just be a red herring though

Deltarune tomorrow but Ralsei today

I can’t believe it’s almost been 10 years since Undertale’s release…

Undertale came out when I was in elementary school, Deltarune’s chapter 1 and 2 came out when I was in middle and high school. Now I’m in college anticipating the new Deltarune chapter and I’m STILL in love with both games. It’s neat, having an interest that’s survived that long. Watching how your art grows throughout the years as you draw the characters over and over. And seeing how the fandom has grown too. It’s crazy how many artists, theorists, writers, fan game makers, and all around lovely’s folks we have.

This story just means a lot to me. It shaped me in so many ways. From Undyne and Alphys helping me to realize you could like girls as a girl, to Toriel and Sans shaping my love of bad puns, and Papyrus literally giving my senior yearbook quote, “Goodbyes aren’t allowed in my town. Just see-you-laters”. I know a lot of the themes in Deltarune are about not relying on escapism (which I agree with), but part of me also hopes the game touches on how positively impactful fiction and fandom can be. Toby Fox already loves getting meta about his games from a mechanical lens, I think I’d be really fun to see him do the same from a fandom lens. Either way, really excited for the new chapters is I guess what I’m trying to say lol.
