The Lockdown Series: Get Crafty
SO I was fresh out of new ideas for blog posts when I realized that writing about what I’ve been doing during Lockdown was good content and a way to record it. Hence why I’m starting this new series of things to do to keep yourself busy whilst stuck indoors!
CRAFTS / DIY
Those that know me, will know how much a love a good craft or a do it yourself fix, and the best part about doing this in…

Let's Tap Out: Why I support sport for mental health
Let’s Tap Out: Why I support sport for mental health
Okay so, I haven’t written in a while and that’s down to a mixture of lack of motivation and creative thoughts. However, UEA Tap Dance and I are fundraising this week for student mental health and why sport is important for your mental health. So I thought I’d share why this cause is so important to me personally as a welcome back to this blog.
As a dancer, we’re taught to be perfect and compare…

Too much Censorship in Saudi: Will there ever be free press?
Too much Censorship in Saudi: Will there ever be free press?
Despite being a high income country, Saudi Arabia is not developed enough to be classed as a ‘developed’ country; a factor of this being media development and the illusion of free press. Reporters without borders stated that “journalists have never before been subjected to as much violence and abusive treatment as in 2018” (RSF, 2018), one of the most notorious acts of violence in association…

Is the Media giving White Saviorism more attention than it deserves?
Is the Media giving White Saviorism more attention than it deserves?
My recent trip to Malawi with International Citizenship Servicebrought about many issues regarding what change was actually being made and whether the programme was predominantly for personal gain. The impacts of ICS are said to be “the delivery of development projects, and the personal development of volunteers” (The Independent, 2013). However, if the main impact is helping the volunteers, is…

All adventures end somewhere.
All adventures end somewhere.
As the title suggests, adventures aren’t forever (even though I wish they were), so this post concludes my time in Thailand working with Camp Thailand. I’m still not sure where I’m going next, but university is an adventure in itself so I’ll keep you updated on that.
Day 14: This day led us to the district of Pak Nam Pran for the day, which started off at the National Park. The route was…

It’s been wayyyy too long since I picked up my laptop and actually wrote something that isn’t an essay or read a text which I definitely don’t understand. But I promised a continuation of my trip to Thailand, so here it is!
Hua Hin Day 8: Elephant day! This is the day we’ve all been waiting for! Everyone is excited to see Thailand’s most famous animal and probably it’s biggest tourist revenue (not for good reasons). We set off for the Wildlife Friends Foundation, an animal rescue park that saves elephants, monkeys and everything in-between from poachers and riding businesses. We split into two groups to go walk two elephants whilst feeding them and then giving them a bath and a good scrub! It’s a completely surreal experience to stand next to such a friendly giant.
On the way home, we’re all exhausted but are ready for the night ahead of us, our first real night out in Hua Hin! After a quick stop to the tattoo shop for some of us, we head to one of Hua Hin’s best nightclubs. It’s an entirely different type of night out to what we’re used to in the UK, lots of free drinks from shot girls and strange looks from locals.
Day 9 & 10: Extremely Hungover, we’re glad for a free day! Some of us head into town and to the local shopping mall for a hangover cure, burgers!
After a day recovering, we head to Santorini Water Park, one of the biggest in the area! It has a completely vertical drop slide, which some of the group decided to brave – surviving with bruises to brag about! After a quick run around on a total wipeout course, where I realised I was not made to compete, a few injuries later, we’re on our way back to camp!

Day 11: Another trip to the school to teach a lesson about body parts, after which we all realised that I can’t draw a body in exact proportion! We headed to the beach for a relaxing day, despite being at shark beach! There was also a walk up to see a big Buddha statue overlooking the beach, the climb definitely made a nap on a sun lounger worth it! The beach has a swim boundary as there have been cases of sharks swimming close to the shore, which is both worrying and exciting, I preferred my nap!

Day 12: Today led us to the monkey temple, first a long trip up a mountain on the rickety bus which took us to what originally looks like a normal Thai temple. After walking the steep steps and making a wish on a golden elephant statue, we made our way to the real focus of the trip. Monkeys. We are warned before we go to the populated areas that the monkeys have a tendency to steal and jump, which led to good entertainment watching two brits get their ice creams stolen!
After this, we headed to a local orphanage to spend some time with the children! The boys played football whilst we had some fun playing circle games and showing the kids filters on snapchat (never felt more like a millennial). The kids are so loving and grateful for the sweets and gifts that we bought, I’ve seen many children’s homes that aren’t colorful and safe spaces so it was nice to see how happy the children were to go to school and learn.
Day 13: Another day of teaching brought a different class and older kids to teach, at least they aren’t as difficult to control! We taught them about shapes and counting the sides of shapes, something I am good at drawing! After a tiring day, we decided to get even more tired and try some Thai boxing! Not my most natural sport but God loves a trier, right?

Camp Thailand, an experience of a lifetime.
Camp Thailand, an experience of a lifetime.
It’s been three weeks since I left some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met and one of the best experiences, behind. This draft has been sat on my laptop for a week, untouched; it’s hard to put such an amazing experience into fathomable words. But here I am, attempting to show you how much I loved the wonderful land of smiles.
Bangkok Days 1 & 2: We started off our journey, all boarding…

Finding myself in every new place.
When I started my gap year last year, the one thing I kept on seeing was “finding yourself?”. In my mind, I thought finding yourself was an act you can only do once; once your find yourself then you’re fine. Upon closer inspection, it does not work this way. After spending 3 months in Malawi, I thought the amount of time I had spent looking into the vast forests of the mountain would be enough.…

The Art of doing Nothing.
The Art of doing Nothing.
Is this a phrase? I’m sure if it was, it would describe my life in the last 2 weeks. Doing nothing is an art that only the 16-20 age range can actually perform. When you don’t have a full-time or even part-time job, studies or friends around, you become accustomed to doing nothing the majority of the time. By nothing, I mean waking up at 11, going to the gym, lunch, wash clothes, dishwasher,…

Life out of Africa.
Life out of Africa.
Tumblr media
It’s been a while since I’ve put my fingers on these keys to solely write a blog post, mostly because I’ve been so busy being away; partially due to procrastination since I’ve been back. May is a very quiet month for me, my only plans being to sit at home and stream all the Netflix I’ve missed in 3 months.
In short, Malawi was an experience of a lifetime that I would give anything to re-do or…

Becoming a Big Sister for the First Time.
A number of weeks have passed since we jumped on a flight from Heathrow to Lilongwe, and how so many things have changed. Now separated from the Salima team, we find ourselves slowly integrating into the Malawian culture. Something that’s so close but so far apart from the western ways we are used to. For me, trying to fit into my host home has been a personal struggle, one that others don’t…

The Real Malawi.
Sorry for the long wait in a new blog post, packing for a 3 month trip has its problems! Flights are also very stressful so I decided to binge Glee instead, very productive! Now I can successfully say that I’ve been living in Malawi for 3 days, it’s been a ride. This week we met at the airport with a lot of us having never even met, I assigned myself surrogate mother to make sure we didn’t lose…
