See, I love this. It's powerful and holds a lot of truth. But I can't ignore where I heard this. I can't ignore that this comes from Disney in the end. That Disney feels safe enough, powerful enough to put this out there and not fear how people might apply it to them.

We just want to live

I woke up this morning, on Trans Day of Remembrance, with the news from Colorado. I woke up seeing images of fascists harassing a trans story hour in Texas last night. I woke up with the memories of stones thrown through windows, of community centers burnt down, of armed white cis men going after literal children.

This day, that is already full of mourning, full of pain and heartbreak, today, when all I want is to be with my loved ones as we remember all the beautiful, precious, unique lives taken by hate and bigotry.

We just want to live. We just want to live. We just want to live. Why is that too much to ask for? Why can't you just leave us alone? Why do you hate us so much? Why do you care so little for our lives, for our humanity that you are willing to destroy us for your own gains? Why is it so hard for you to see us as the human beings we are? We just want to live.

Today we mourn our dead. Tomorrow we fight like hell for the living, because no matter how tired we are, no matter how scared we are, no matter how broken we already are, this is a fight for our lives.

Once again, Tumblr manages to succeed via just being honest with their users.

I made a post back around April fool's about the crabs being so popular because the joke was that every other website tries to trick you into clicking things so they can make money from your clicks and what if instead a website just asked "please click this revenue generating crab. It is there to generate revenue. In return you will have clicked on a crab. Nothing more." And the answer to that question was "people will frantically click on that crab. They don't hate the idea of the website getting money, they hate the idea of being profited on against their will".

So Tumblr implemented actual revenue crabs. "For this much money you can fill your or someone else's dash with virtual crabs. This will have the effect of there being crabs on their screen."

And people will buy those crabs. Because yes you're spending money on something stupid and useless but it's being sold to you as "hey you want something stupid and useless?", which is a nice change of pace from every other site trying to make itself out to be something more than what it is.

Twitter is floundering with the checkmark system because it's being sold as "confirm that you are someone important and who you say you are is true", which it isn't at all right now because anyone can buy one. You're buying a useless checkmark that only says that YOU think you're important. Or, more often than not right now, you are intending to trick other people into thinking you're someone you're not.

Meanwhile, Tumblr just said "Consider this double check mark. It does nothing. You will be marking yourself as someone who paid money for a meaningless checkmark and sometimes it will randomly turn into a bunch of crabs, making the site harder to use". And the userbase is like "Well sure, that sounds delightful."

The point is, despite what all the marketing and advertising people have tried to say, painting trash gold and trying to pass it off as something better is almost never as effective as just saying "hey you want this trash?"

Twitter and tiktok are like a coral reef

It’s loud and bright and productive and glamorous. It’s fast-paced and things cycle through the environment in hours. Everyone is trying to fight for their position in the food chain and stay Relevant. There are lots of pretty things to look at. If something gets Popular it has an impact on everything around it, for a brief time until the next big thing arrives. To an outside observer it’s chaos but to those involved it has order, reason, a Purpose.

Tumblr is like a deep-sea ecosystem.

Things are slow and weird. Memes bounce around for years and even decades. People exist in their little isolated hydrothermal vent communities of mutuals. Sometimes something big happens (suez canal, November 5th, Queen Lizzie kickin’ it) and we all gather around like a whale fall but for the most part we’re just snootling around in the sand doing whatever the fuck. Occasionally someone comes down and shines their flashlight around and immediately leaves and tells their friends about what freaky shit we have going on in the depths. We don’t care. We’re very busy talking about Our Friend Jonathan from a book published in the 1800s like worms slowly digesting the bones of a long-dead organism.

It's always been so funny to me that the Council of Elrond is literally just a meeting of people who have showed up in Rivendell with different problems and just happened to do so at more or less the same time. They didn't gather there to discuss the Ring, the future of the Middle Earth or the rise of Sauron.

Nope. Each of them have faced An Issue and decided to ask Elrond for help.

Poor Elrond. He managed to avoid the kingship, but not becoming a parent figure for almost everyone in the Middle Earth.

sometimes i get sad thinking about the changes they made to faramir in the films and the way that seems to have shaped the general perception of his character, but then i remember the sheer power he has in the book and think....maybe it's for the best.

everyone in gondor loves him so much that randos form a crowd and chant his name when he arrives at the city... soldiers weep whilst on duty standing guard when they think he's dying....... he's literally the jewel – the hope – of minas tirith and everyone is obsessed with him... he's THE knight in shining armour... and on top of that he has an unshakable moral code and is so so gentle and tender and loves his sad little histories but he's also a respected leader and war commander and scout and he's fiercely brave and "can tame both man and beast" and he's a tactical smartass and a he's little bitch and he has beautiful long black hair that blows in the wind and he kisses eowyn on the walls of minas tirith in the bright sunlight and doesn't give a shit that literally everyone can see them..........like what do you do with that. how do you depict that raw power. the unhinged appeal. the secksiness of character ???
