Being a Proshipper doesn't mean we don't care about fiction.

Being a Proshipper doesn't mean we don't love characters.

Being a Proshipper doesn't mean we can't have strong emotional, sometimes parasocial attachments to fictional characters.

It means we understand the difference between pixels and the physical world.

It means that, while putting a character through the horrors in any way might be upsetting, it's also fucking hilarious and we commit to it. It means we can experience the full range of however we play with our dolls.

It means we don't constrain ourselves in fiction. It's an endless canvas, and we explore all of it without guilt to our leisure.

Because at the end of the day, fiction is playing pretend.

How people choose to integrate reality into fiction or whether they choose to do so isn't our problem. In fact, we do a disservice pretending otherwise, because at that point it's taking away people's agency, and we're not doing that.

Case in point. You can write about your incestuous crossverse AU between two minor characters and have anything happen to them, and you wouldn't care any less.

I am actually getting so fucking sick of people who say, "But minor x adult ships cause real world harm!" or whatever type of fiction they've chosen to target.

When you ask these people HOW exactly something completely fictional with proper content warnings can possibly hurt real people, you usually get some version of, "Because it will teach kids that those things are fine in real life!"

And they probably say that because they don't have anything better, seeing as this is the only excuse they ever give and it's an extremely flimsy one at that.

First of all, if a story has mature elements and has been properly warned for them, then kids shouldn't be reading them anyway!!! My brother got in trouble for watching The Matrix when he was really little because that movie is rated R! And it's so much easier to steal a physical DVD than it is to get through parental filters on an internet browser!! Are you telling me that even gen z's neglectful parents are still more vigilant than you??? You're going to BRAG that you're an awful parent to make your point????

And second of all, once again, it blows my fucking mind that this is used as an excuse so fucking often because it's such a terrible one!!! My brother, when he was VERY little and definitely still in the highly impressionable stage, managed to play counterstrike behind our parents' backs, and surprisingly, ✨magically✨, he did NOT grow up believing that real terrorism is cool and fun just because that's how the game portrays it, and if a wildly successful VIDEO GAME that is essentially pro-war propaganda can't teach you that bad things are good, how can some random fanfiction on the internet COMPLETELY shape your morals to match exactly what you read???

It's so fucking transparent that these people don't care about kids; They care about fiction existing that makes them feel icky in a place they could end up coming across it and they think their sense of disgust is akin to a moral compass.

That's why their excuses feel so hollow and so empty, because they are justifications after the fact; Rationalizations applied to their feelings rather than beliefs founded on evidence.

hi! I’m 13 and I been reading a bit of porn. I’m just wondering like is that ok for me? That's absolutely okay for you. There's nothing wrong with media that involves sex, including media that's created specifically for the purpose of being arousing and involving sex. Just be aware that porn is not a substitute for actual sex education and there's a lot of exaggeration, lack of negotiation and even consent sometimes!

It's not going to hurt you, it won't affect your growth, it's absolutely fine. It's in fact healthy to enjoy different types of media, including sexual ones.
