Project 3 -:- Occupations -:- Part 1
This time I have to transform this building to something based on its surroundings (universities, train station, hotel, some housing, ...). I ended up deciding to focus mostly on uni students and make a creative studio.
Firstly I had begin by crating a protagonist (since we were not given one):
Tumblr media
Then we did a site visit and been given floor plans to create bubble diagrams over to get a feel of the space and how we want to use it. Here is my first go at doing so:

Relics in the Landscape by Daniel Arsham
There's a nice aged copper effect that brings across the idea that they've been there for a long while without maintenance, hence why they're called relics. The small gemstone bits poking out the 'eroded' parts help further this idea. I particularly like Pikachu as it's not something you would expect to see; especially in this style of sculpture.

Project 2 -:- Re-imaging a place -:- Part 3
I added some papercutting elements on the lights and decided against doing it on the greenery as it wouldn't look good on the trees and could be too overwhelming. It would also have taken too much time as the pieces are tiny, hence very fiddly to place and glue down.
Tumblr media
I then spent some time using Photoshop to add extra linework that I stretched to be larger than the image. Finishing off with adding moths and people as well as a light effect on the lights.

Final result of the day:

Now, I will be working on adding more contrast to the people and moths to make more visible, possibly moving some moths onto the white space well to lead you into the space.

Project 2 -:- Re-imaging a place -:- Part 2
I used Procreate to create easy guidelines to draw on A3 cartridge paper so I can get the perspective and main shapes drawn in correctly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a quick model out of post-it notes to help me figure out perspective and how to add extra elements.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then sketched in the details I wanted to add to create a more garden like space for the moths to live in and people to enjoy.
Lastly, I went in with some black and white ink and messily shaded the space to make it create a darker, monochrome background colour, allowing the colour to pop more later on.

Next, I will be some colour through papercutting techniques, and afterwords I'll be using Photoshop to add people and moths into the drawing and possibly work more on lighting.

Project 2 -:- Re-imaging a place -:- Part 1
Expanding on project 1, I now have to transform my chosen building's interior to suit a new purpose of my choice.
I have chosen to re-imagine it as a moth and firefly sanctuary and possibly study space that would be open from evenings and throughout the night. It would give an alternative safe space for people who prefer the nighttime but don't want to go out partying while also creating a new attraction for both locals and tourists alike. Moreover, it could educate people about moths and create a place for moth lovers.
Below, I have attached a photo of my quick sketches of my initial ideas that I will be expanding on later on.

Project 1 -:- Idealsing Manchester -:- Part 1
Create an atmospheric drawing based on a historical building in Manchester.
Tumblr media
John Rylands Library, Manchester, UK
I chose this building because it's not what you would expect a library to look like. It also gave me slight haunted house vibes, hence why I edited the photo to contain more oranges and purples. The building was commissioned by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of John Rylands during the 1980s. During the 1960s, Enriqueta became a companion to Martha Rylands, who at the time was married to John Ryalnds, but when Martha died in 1875, Enriqueta proceed to marry the much older John. When John died in 1888 she requested the help of architect Basil Champneys to design a building a Victorian neo-gothic style; the building's architecture also takes inspiration from churches which makes sense as the library was largely ment to be theological.

Later, I am planning to create a copy of the finished sketch above to colour using coloured pencils and maybe some coffee stains to create a different effect and possibly atmosphere without destroying the original.

Standard Kitchen 2017 by João Vasco Paiva
That's a pretty standard kitchen, well aside from the fact that's it's completely stone and thus non functional. It was definitely not something I expected to find on my way back, but I liked this sculpture. It's well spaced, and you can easily imagine someone cooking here. The minimal bumps also give it a more lived-in in and used l, ok which I think suits a standard kitchen adequately.

This collection by Masayoki Koorida was one of my favourites there. The sculptures are smooth giving them an simple yet elegant finish. They also have a more childlike energy to them letting your imagination go wild. I especially like "Growth" since it reminds me of a rocketship.
I also did some quick sketches of them (- "Kids") when I was on site.

Summer Project: Sketch your favourite and least favourite building in the area you live in.
I sketched both my chosen buildings in Procreate and added some light shading to separate the major structural layers of the buildings. In the future, I am hoping to add more details (for example: bricks and colour) and to get better at adding depth and atmosphere to my sketches.
Tumblr media
Favourite building: Trafford Park Hotel, Manchester, UK
While this hotel is now abandoned, it still looks great. I love the tiny complex carving details throughout this building as well as the depth of it. I also adore whenever buildings have a clock feature, and this one clearly has one.
Tumblr media
Least favourite building: The Peveril of the Peak, Manchester , UK
Whilst I enjoy chaos, this building is just slightly too chaotic for me. The front seems glued on to the rest of the building, and the back of it reminds me of a block house a small child would make. Also, what is not seen is that the colour of the front is a dirty neon-like yellow while the back of it is regular red brick; these two colours slightly clash together further making me dislike this building.
