Gramophone Company

For my first project I’ve been looking up information on the Gramophone Company and is said to be ‘the parent organisation’ of HMV.

“The Gramophone Company was founded in 1898 by William Barry Owen and Trevor Williams in London, England. Owen was acting as agent for Emile Berliner, inventor of the gramophone record, whilst Williams provided the finances. Most of the company's early discs were made in Hanover, Germany at a plant operated by members of Berliner's family, though it had operations around the world.”

First Recordings

“In 1898, Fred Gaisberg moved from the U.S. to London to set up the first disc recording studio in Europe; it was situated in Maiden Lane. Among early artists he recorded was the Syria Lamont, an Australian soprano whose single "Coming through the Rye" was one of the first ever issued. In December 1900, Owen gained the manufacturing rights for the Lambert Typewriter Company, and the Gramophone Company was for a few years renamed the Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd. This was an attempt to diversify the business model, in response to a series of lawsuits brought about by Edison Bell.”

Creative Drink Driving! Road Safety! advertisements!

The photos and links I have uploaded here are for examples I’m using for my ‘Think! Drink Drive! Road Safety’ project, which is our second project we have been given now for our second year.

These designs I’ve uploaded below are ones that got my attention and for this project, I want to make something that will attract my target audience like these designs did for me and others. I tried to credit the people who made them and website uploaded them, but there are many links , I just added the ones I got them from below the images. All different to each other and have their own message to put across.

The photos here, I’m just looking at other window designs/displays for my ‘Subject in Context’ project. I know some of these aren't to do with my brand HMV, but these are other examples I’ve been looking at to help me along in the project still.

Hmv - Window displays

I’ve been researching and looking at other HMV window displays to see how attractive they are to make the target audience to stop and look at the stores window display. Here are the ones I’ve found that HMV have done, some better then others and seeing these I can make my display different to the ones I have shown here.

HMV information and Photos.

“HMV Retail Ltd. is an entertainment retailing company (registered in England) operating in the United Kingdom. The first HMV-branded store was opened by the Gramophone Company on Oxford Street in 1921, and the HMV name was also used for television and radio sets manufactured from the 1930s onwards. The retail side of the business began to expand in the 1960s, and in 1998 was divested from EMI, the successor to the Gramophone Company, to form what would become HMV Group.”

“His Master's Voice (HMV) is a famous trademark in the recording industry and was the unofficial name of a major British record label. The phrase was coined in the 1890s as the title of a painting of a terrier mix dog named Nipper, listening to a wind-up disc gramophone. In the original painting, the dog was listening to a cylinder phonograph. In the 1970s, the statue of the dog and gramophone, His Master's Voice, were cloaked in bronze and was awarded by the record company (EMI) to artists or music producers or composers as a music award and often only after selling more than 100.000 sound carriers such as LPs.”

The photos I put quickly together below are photos I have taken inside the store, to show what it’s like and what vast amount they sell there. DVDs, games, posters, track records, electronics and more.

Been doing some research on HMV when it began, where it started up, how many stores etc. I’ll be looking up more of the history about HMV like the how they’ve developed over the years, where stores are based and also think about the interactive retail experience for it.

New Project!

First project of my second year at University called ‘Subject in context’. Looking at the Brief it’s about picking any brand you like to work on and make a interactive window design or create something new for the brand they’ll attract people walking by, so the the one I’ve chosen to do is ‘HMV’.

I’ve been taking some picture around the bullring of some windows displays, I will be taking more because there are some really nice displays, my phone died so couldn’t take any more *sigh*.

Summer Project - Brands I’m loyal to.

For part of this summer Project we have been asked to write about brands we are loyal to and what we've purchased from them.

Some brands I picked for this and that I'd say I'm loyal to are:

Nike - ‘Nike, Inc. is an American multinational corporation that is engaged in the design, development, manufacturing, and worldwide marketing and sales of footwear, apparel, equipment, accessories, and services.’

Vans - ‘Vans is an American manufacturer of shoes, based in Cypress, California, owned by VF Corporation. The company also produces apparel and other products such as T-shirts, hoodies, socks, hats, and backpacks.’

Adidas - ‘Adidas AG is a German multinational corporation, headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, that designs and manufactures shoes, clothing and accessories. It is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe, and the second largest in the world.’

These are brands that I have purchased products from over the years now. All these brands are similar in a way, like target audience, accessories, branding etc. They’re well known brands by many people and different company's worldwide and have been around for years.

I have purchased mainly shoes and clothes from them, I like the quality of the products and the design for the shoes/clothes they make as well other products they manufacture.

Other then clothing/shoe brands, there are brands on social media I'm loyal to like, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, these brands help with ways of communication with people.

Facebook - It is an American for-profit corporation and an online social media  and social networking service based in Menlo Park, California. Facebook was launched on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, along with fellow Harvard College students and roommates, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. 

WhatsApp - Messenger is a freeware and cross-platform instant messaging service for smartphones. It uses the Internet to make voice calls, one to one video call, calls and text messages.

Instagram - launched in October 2010, it's a mobile, desktop and Internet-based photo-sharing application and service that allows users to share pictures and videos either publicly or privately.

Snapchat - Released September, 2011. It is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application  created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown, former students at Stanford University and developed by Snap Inc., originally Snapchat Inc.

Skull drawing/Map.

I started to draw out this skull because I want to use it for my poster that I may still make or for my final design and how I want it to look.

Here is the skull again, but as an Island. Yes influence came from King Kong/ Kong Skull Island, but this is my design recreated from the drawing above. more detail will be added thought it would be a nice design for my project.

Plan for final: Here are ideas of what I’m thinking of doing for the final piece. I’ll be making  one of these on the images here. I know what I want to do and how to go about it, now it’s just getting it done.

Easter Project: This is what I did for the easter project, didn’t do many only the one. Tried to make a horror kind of affect to it, with the skull and the running ink going down the pan, leading to the ‘X’ under the skull.

Drawing Maps: At the start of the first chapter of Robert Louis Stevenson's ‘Treasure Island’ theres a drawing of a map which I really found interesting and cool. So after seeing that I wanted to draw out my own maps for the project. The first image is a recreation of the map in the book, I’ve just changed a few bits of the map from the design in the book.

The 2nd and 3rd map are other maps I’ve drawn out. On the left Ive gone over it in crayon, just to see how it would look (needs more colour on it before adding detail) and the right I’ve gone over in coffee to get that, olden days, pirate map kind of texture and rough feel to it.

Treasure Island Poster Covers: Since Treasure Island has had a lot of reboots, I started to look at some of the posters that have been made from the 1900 - 2012. May create a poster as well for the book. Looking at the colours, composition, typography which some have the some kind of style and images they use.

Treasure Island Introduction: On this page in my sketchbook I started to write down notes about the book that were interesting to me. These notes I’ve written down are from different pages of the introduction of the book. photo isn’t the best, but yeah.

Treasure Island: This is when I finally picked a book to work on. I wanted to pick something different from everyone else because the list of books I made were probably, the the ones people would mostly pick to work on. Treasure Island is a well know book of pirates and adventure, its a good book for this project.
