The end of the semester was drawing closer and closer, peaking CJ’s anxiety to whole new levels. Once this semester closed hold, and hoping his grades stayed practically unscathed, then he would only be a handful of credits away from wearing another cap and gown. Not that the four years would be the end; it was still a long climb and he was already looking into graduate programs. But that was so far in the future - there was still a couple hurdles to be dealt with before then. Most pressing being a final composition for one of his music classes. The choice to study scoring had never been welcomed warmly by the other Bolands but CJ felt rather passionate about it. That was until they were given a final assignment to come up with a short composition that was to be based on a life experience of their own. The struggle wasn’t even in writing the music, it was in finding the perfect moment in his boringly average life to write music to. And he’d only had about a week left to pull something together to present. That’s what had him seated at a table outside in a lesser populated area, pages upon pages of scribbled notes and stanzas. He was humming along to his melodies, cursing under his breath when it didn’t sound right, and burying his face in his hands outta sheer frustration. It was during the latter moment that he’d heard another speak up, and he poked his head up to see the other young man with a cigarette in his mouth. “C’mon now, this place ain’t so bad,” CJ said in a dull tone, trying to distract from his own headache. “What’s got you down anyway?”

With his last class of the day finally over with, Oliver gathered his things and headed towards his favorite spot with his journal tucked tightly under his arm. For the little work he’d done that day, it was surprising how much he had to write for his diary entry. His pen’s prey of choice, however, didn’t stray towards any of his peers despite the strong pull of his ink; but instead a teacher. It was rare he had any complaints about the college professors and if he did have one, it’d be about how they did too good of a job of hiding their smiles when he really stuck it to one of his peers. Yet, here he was sitting at a rundown table with his blood still boiling. How dare that glorified substitute mark him down a letter for simply replying to a question. Was it the best idea to mention how Kelsi with an I was cheating on Brad with the entire lacrosse team? Maybe, maybe not, but that didn’t mean Oliver was wrong or that he deserved to be punished because he was defending himself. Taking a break from his venting, he pulled a cigarette from the pocket inside his jacket and lit it, placing the stick to his lips. After a few drags, he decided to eighty-six the entry and pull out a different book instead. He’d need all the studying he could get now to pass the class.

That’s... actually a good question. I don’t know, I guess the army is just weird like that. Then I can see why he’s bothering you a lot. Some parents have like attachment issues - it’s not exactly the same, but my grandparents were like that when my dad was stationed in South Korea. I think they called at least one a day for two and a half hours at the very least. No, they’re in Florida. Luckily they don’t feel as attached to me, at least not enough to bother me a lot.

Oh, sorry - that’s 4 am in military time. My dad’s in the army, so... Well that’s cool. I mean not the super protective part, that’s never fun. But it’s gotta be nice to have someone checking on you. I’m guessing he’s not close by or anything?

And I thought my dad was psycho. I mean, sure he calls me everyday at 0400 hours, but not for more than like 25 minutes. Are you guys really close or something?

Honestly, my dad is just getting more and more pathetic day after day. I just got off a three hour long skype session with him. Do you know how much of that call was dead air? At least like… 75% percent of it. I know he’s totally trying to keep me inside and away from any frat parties tonight, but lucky for me they never start earlier than 11, anyway. Nice try dad, but you still lost.

Well, I thought about speaking up but for some reason the desire to keep my job outweighed any sort of anger I felt? That and... I was pretty flustered. I mean, it was as much a surprise to me as it was to them, you know?

BIOGRAPHY

when asked where cameron boland is from, his quick response is a shrug and “everywhere”. which is true. he was born oversees at a base in germany. army brat - that’s the term commonly used for kids like him. with a general for a father, the boland family were stationed all over the globe. germany, south korea, japan and then a few of the states; florida, alaska, indiana, massachusettes - you name it, he’s likely been there. this was both a luxury and an inconvenience - while he’s been to many exotic places and all over the states, cameron never had a stable childhood and didn’t stay around long enough to really make friends. because of this, he’s somewhat shy and socially awkward. but most of all, he’s become very idealistic - without having the reality of what actual relationships are like and what it means to grow far apart from people, he only has a romantic notion of what it would be like to have a stronger bond with other people. 

seeing as he doesn’t stick around a single area for long, cameron had to learn to entertain himself. with two older brothers it was easy enough - the boland boys were usually the only constants in one another’s lives. but when the elder bolands left for school or to start their own army careers, cameron was left to kind of figure things out for himself. despite having classically “strong” male presences in his life, he was incredibly soft and mild-mannered so it was easy for him to be clumped up into the more forgettable “nerd” crowd wherever he went with an established social hierarchy. this is comfortable for him - he’d become an avid fan of video games and comic books as things he could enjoy in solidarity while jumping from community to community. sports weren’t worth it when you may not be in the same school for a whole season, but comics could be found anywhere. he doesn’t really mind the ridicule and stereotypes that come with it - he enjoys what he enjoys and it’s that simple. 

on top of having very little time to establish relationships, cameron hasn’t really had very many “romantic experiences”. up until college, he just didn’t stick around long enough to become a blip on any girl’s radars. but that didn’t mean they didn’t become an object of his affections. hopelessly romantic, cameron falls in love just as quickly as you can say “hello”. in fact, within a few minutes of meeting a girl there’s a high chance he’s already developed some sort of affection for them. as such he relentlessly pines after girls, and goes out of his way to try and garner their favor. which isn’t exactly hard - he’s an incredibly sweet young man. but unfortunately there isn’t much else that stands out about him. so more often than not, cameron gets used. of course it doesn’t occur to him until it’s too late and at that point all he can do is shrug it off and move onto someone else. the few times he’s actually landed in a relationship, more often than not he’s more into it than the other person, so no matter which way you cut it he’s just never been particularly lucky in love. 

the real question on a lot of people’s minds is how in the hell did an army brat who’s toured most of europe and asia during his childhood end up in the midwest when graduating high school? when cameron turned eighteen and finished school, he decided to finally find a place to set some roots - at least for four years, anyway. intelligent and armed with benefits from being the son of a veteran, cameron could get into any college he wanted to. so to make the decision easier, he found a map of the united states, pinned it to the wall and blindly threw a dart at it. wherever the dart landed was to be his destination, and it landed right in illinois - around where the town of shermer was located. a google search supplied him with the news that a university was situated there - illinois state of northbrook. seemed promising, so he applied and jumped at the idea to move.
