This Skin I’m in

Oh, this skin I’m in

I’m trapped in this skin,

Skin got me trapped in a cage?

So thick but so thin.

All words stinging

Like bullet wounds.

Words? Actually.. the stares and the fear

Pierce through my skin like the first minutes of getting your first tattoo.

Tattoos LOL.

This skin I’m in

It’s tattooed over my flesh.

Over my soul.

Over ME.

Trapped in this skin, EYE was locked away.

EYE, the ME you cannot & choose not to see.

Yet trapped in this skin, I’ve gotten comfortable.

Comfortable with how to navigate this body, this brain, & the workings of this world, to be able to protect this body.

Trapped in this skin, I recognize this is it.

This is me.

There is no cage, but the world thought they could trick me into thinking there was one.

Trapped in this skin, I can see there is no trap.

Maybe some mindfucks, but that’s about it.

This skin I’m in.

This OH SO beautiful skin I’m in.

No longer trapped by the cage beautifully crafted for me.

No longer caged in this body.

No longer attached to anything.

With this skin I’m in

I am free to just be.

“Black Angels” is a mini collection I created inspired by Eartha Kitt’s song “Paint Me Black Angels; Angelitos Negros” from the 1950’s asking for artists to represent black people in art. I combined modern fashion trends from black culture with ancient art to depict black angels. I’ve been working on this for a year now and made everything myself, the design & the clothes. IM BLACK & IM ANGRY

I'm black and I'm angry

But I couldn't tell you why.

I mean, I could tell you but you wouldn't understand.

When I tell you I'm hurting what can you say to make the hurt go away?

What can you do to take the drugs out of our neighborhoods?

Keep our children away from gangs,

Away from hate, corruption & more pain?

What can you do?

They say the black women is so angry, she's so strong, yet conniving.

She's so beautiful, but her hair's nappy, and her mouth is too chatty.

With her child bearing hips she must be sunshine & rainbows in the bedroom but her knowledge is never enough to stop the rain pouring in your ongoing pain parade.

“Oh what supple breast you have," as she stares in the mirror, she sees how you see her & within experience it becomes clearer.

She doesn't see the queen, just the peasant who carries her body.

The peasant the world sees & tells her how the queen should live.

You see I'm BLACK & I'm ANGRY

Because I'm so tired of seeing my sisters hurting themselves because that's all they see done to them & those around them.

I believe hurt people, hurt people.

And the cycle never stops.

This world breaks down our ppl & then in turn we help them break us down & we don't talk about that.

We don't talk about it because we think we're so tough.

We're so tough we miss blessings & destroy our own futures.

We don't talk about it because we're afraid to tap into our emotions.

"Only the strong survive," we're told. "Show no love, love will get you killed," we're told.

"Suck it up, be strong," we're told.

“We've been through worse, this will pass," we're told.

We're not told how to deal with the pain though.

How to not get angry, how to not just let things pass, but truly understand what's happening.

Why it's happening.

And accept so we can grow from it.

We only know how to pretend like nothing's wrong, when our whole world is crumbling around us.

I'm black and I'm angry, but I'm not angry because I'm black.

I'm angry because within all of our "magic" we've yet to figure out the formula for taking care of our own spirits.

We never tap into our own energy to seek the guidance & answers right in our faces.

But we're so quick to get angry when no one else is there for us either.
