Hi, I decided to do some research and put together a table (this took a while, I opened each character file, even Social Bunny and Repo-Man who have no voice in the game) each voice and version of the Sims, including the tutorial, I also decided to leave at the end the version of the base game and which version the Body Shop demo uses, in addition to that, as some ancestral Sims use an old neighborhood numbering (Pleasantview-N014, Strangetown-N010 and Veronaville-N005) I decided to separate in the character file the Sims that still have the old numbering with those that have the new numbering, you can see the difference in the prints below, usually the ones with the old number are in the final prints, I know it was a lot and obviously I wasted a lot of time, this was a lot of free time and lack of better things to do.

This can be useful for describing unused resources on the TCRF. Thank you 😀.
Resource List to Table Tool
I've just released a web tool for The Sims 2 modders that converts SimPe resource lists to HTML and Mod The Sims BBCode tables. The tool includes group and type names, and allows to sort the rows of the generated code.
It's intended to make preparing technical descriptions for mods easier. See an example of how it can be used.

Hi!! I'm curious what you mean by GRM adds a bunch of unnecessary stuff the game doesn't care about that the Legacy sgr doesn't. I've peaked in both of them but the differences all go over my head so it got me curious which parts of the GRM one are unnecessary? And then would it be better to use the Legacy sgr on reddit or to tweak your own existing GRM one to take out the unnecessary things? Or tweak the original maxis one?
Okay, long post because I am going to include screenshots. Let's start with the UC.
Let's look at the VideoCards.sgr first, because that is what GRM works with. When GRM makes your game "recognize" your GPU, what it does is add your graphics card model to the VideoCards.sgr:
But as you can see, the VideoCards.sgr is literally just a list of cards and the comment at the very top says "maps vendor ID to vendor name, maps the card ID to card name". So the game now knows the name of your card and which vendor it is from, but there are no other instructions in this file. So what does the game actually do with this information?
For this, we now need to look at the GraphicsRules.sgr. Relatively at the top of the file, you will see this:
Here it says that the game is supposed to change some options around depending on the card and card vendor. We scroll down to find the specifics. There are a bunch of entries that look pretty similar, so let me just show you one example:
Here, the game checks whether your GPU is listed under the vendor NVIDIA. If this is the case, it then checks whether your graphics card's name includes the terms "NV 1" or "NV 2" or "Riva" or "TNT". If this is the case, it switches to software rasterization instead of hardware rasterization, because those cards were already outdated back in 2004. It does this with all other vendors as well.
Further down there are some more tweaks, such as:
For example, here, the game checks if you have an NVIDIA card (without even checking the specific model!!!) and then creates this workaround texture to prevent blue screens of death -- and this right here is why I said adding your GPU via GRM could even be detrimental, because these tweaks are extremely outdated. They're from 2004, for graphics cards from that era!
What EA did in the Legacy Collection is to simply take all of this out from the GraphicsRules.sgr, since all modern GPUs can handle the game just fine. From what I can see, the game does not check your GPU anymore at all, so it doesn't even matter if you add it via GRM anymore. Using the Legacy Collection version of the GraphicsRules.sgr is just the more "elegant" solution, because it's shorter and doesn't even make the game go on a wild goose hunt for your GPU model in the first place.

in the interest of nostalgia, here are some mods i've found to restore old game behavior that was removed or changed by updates.
mean interactions for any age - removed in OFB. anyone else remember booting up the game and seeing lilith duke it out with her parents?
kill visiting playables - self-explanatory. removed in seasons.
fewer hobby wants - to keep FT wants from cannibalizing the older wants.
no pet obsession - same as above, but for pets wants.
no shade eyes salute - removes the salute added in M&G.
let me know if there are any i've missed!

Fun Fact: The Sim in The Sims Bowling is ACTUALLY Don Lothario and not some sim looking like him. Why he's bowling? idk.
Also one of the opponents is named Kelly. Was sad to find out her name was not Annie but oh well...
The name Kelly does remind me of that deleted veronaville character though

Some more thoughts based on the post about D3DERR_INVALIDCALL in The Sims 2.
The path to the source code file contains the abbreviation GZ. It is very likely that this is the file structure of the Gonzo development framework on which the game is built. It uses this shorthand in its files.
The SimCity community has recently started developing a reimplementation of it.
More details at their link:
We also have a discussion about the technology used in The Sims in The Sims 2 Beta Discord Server in #ts3-beta-channel:
1. TS1 is built on top of MFC (Edith) and Gonzo/Rizzo. It uses a renderer which utilizes a mix of SC2K, SC3K, and Quake3D code.
2. TS2 extends TS1’s behavior engine but replaces the renderer with a new 3D engine, although it still uses the Gonzo development framework. It’s pretty much TS1 on steroids internally.
I did the DEP fix on my pc and I haven't gotten any crashes yet but I've gotten pink code along with this on the cheat console (I had a lot of messages saying this there): WARNING D3D Error: Bad return code, is this normal? : D3DERR_INVALIDCALL C:\dev\sims 2 remaster\DL\GZFrame\Graphic\GZGraphic4\Win32\source\GZGraphic4ShaderProgramDX.cpp(435)4
Hi! Any file ending with .cpp is a source code file. So we can gather that there is a bad return code/invalid call error concerning Direct3D (which is Microsoft's DirectX programming interface) and something that is in the game's shader code. We don't have access to the source code, so I don't know what exactly the issue is here.
So this is basically what I've been saying all along. It looks like the game is doing something "illegal" when rendering things (meaning it is not strictly following the rules of DirectX), and this is what potentially causes pink flashing. But as long as we don't have access to this source code, there is nothing we can do about it.
And there is a big fat BUT: There is no guarantee that this error has anything to do with the pink flashing either. It could also be coincidence, since errors aren't necessarily always visible. For example, if you open your browser's developer tools, there will be a bunch of red errors there too, but you just don't notice them because the program handles them automatically.

🧱🔧 Scion, a WIP implementation of the Maxis Gonzo-Rizzo engine
What is this?
Scion is a (very work-in-progress) reference implementation of the Gonzo-Rizzo game engine used by Maxis in the late '90s and 2000s.
You can find the code here:
Who is this for?
This project is mainly for programmers either developing DLL mods, or digging into the internals of 3D-era Maxis games.
While this framework version is specifically based on SimCity 4 Deluxe, it might still be helpful for looking at different versions of the framework that were used in other Maxis projects, like:
SimCity 3000
The Sims
The Sims 2
Spore
Since this is an SDK and not a standalone mod, it won't immediately benefit players.
How is this different from gzcom-dll?
gzcom-dll is a basic SDK for writing a DLL that the game engine will load, and for plugging into different parts of the game.
It's mostly meant for making as many SC4 game interfaces accessible as possible.
Scion is the game engine that would be loading DLLs and tying them all together.
How does it work?
(This section summarizes a lot of stuff that's been written about the game engine by myself, speeder, and Null 45, so if you're already familiar with DLL modding, this probably isn't news to you.)
Gonzo-Rizzo is named for Muppets characters Gonzo the Great and Rizzo the Rat.
As best I can tell:
Gonzo ("GZ" in code) is responsible for a lot of the main functionality: the core framework, graphics, sound, resource management, and so on.
Rizzo ("RZ") mostly handles utilities like string parsing, filesystem access, thread synchronization, and reusable helpers.
The game engine is modeled after Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM).
At the core of the engine is the Framework, which provides:
A GZCOM class registry, for registering component classes and creating new instances of registered classes;
A registry of system services, which are singleton classes that can be used by components and do work on game ticks;
Coordination for game ticks and framework hooks.
Above the COM are directors, which act as framework hooks and can (and usually do) have their own registered classes, as well as child directors.
The engine comes with prefabricated directors for doing graphics, sound, UI, and resource management, among other things.
If you ever checked the Apps folder in SimCity 3000 and saw a bunch of GZ*D files, that's what those are:
for example, GZSoundD.DLL is the GZ Sound Director.
Games build on top of the engine by doing the basic framework initialization and registering their own directors.
For example:
SimCity 4 has its own cSC4COMDirector to register its 3D renderer, simulator, lot developers, etc.
SC3K has a bunch of SIM* DLLs that serve the same purpose, like SimTransit.dll, a GZCOM DLL director that implements transit networks.
The game also takes responsibility for loading plugin DLLs, which is where expansion functionality comes in.
(Aside): For any enterprising SC3K modders, those built-in DLLs might be a useful entry point for modding that game.
How far along is Scion?
As of posting, the Scion implementation has:
a core GZCOM implementation that's mostly done, with some scattered TODO items, and
a mostly-done implementation of DBPF for resource management.
There's still some more work to be done on the resource manager, and no work has started on the other core directors.
The README on GitHub has a table showing the latest status.

🧠💾🛠️ I've always had a fascination with The Sims franchise and I am currently looking to get into programming. How was The Sims created? What programs were used (Python, Java, etc.)? What programs and computer languages would I need to learn to emulate this sort of game? - Quora
Answer by Eric Bowman:
I was part of the core Sims team. The first Sims code was written by Jamie Doornbos, later I joined him along with Don Hopkins; the three of us wrote pretty much all of the core code using Visual C++ and used a lot of STL. We also adapted an internal Maxis framework called Gonzo, written by a few people including Paul Pedriana (Paul later drove EASTL). I ended up rewriting a lot of Gonzo specifically for The Sims, but it was a nice windowing abstraction to get started with. I'm still quite proud of my text edit widget, which had all kinds of features totally unnecessary for a computer game, but I had a little time to kill while the game play was coming together.
I think the precursor to the original character animation code was written by Jacques Servin, who was responsible for the famous SimCopter easter egg (SimCopter) and is now one of the Yes Men (in an odd twist of fate, along with a college acquaintance of mine, Igor Vamos). Or maybe Jamie helped him with that, I honestly can't remember.
We wrote a ton of code as a small team, and it was 100% C++ -- there wasn't a single line of assembly code in The Sims, at least not in the core code. By the time it shipped we were using a few internal EA libraries as well, in particular for font rendering. We also didn't use 3d acceleration at all, which turned out to be a good call for massive market penetration. We hit a sweet spot in terms of CPU requirements for smooth gameplay and Moore's Law. We also had basically no unit tests; back then Real Programmers didn't test their own code, which led to an army of testers (who were amazing) and basically a lot more pain that necessary. I'm really happy the world moved toward automated unit testing since then.
Jamie created the "tree language" which gave the characters behavior, which they received from the objects they interacted with. Patrick Barrett was the first and probably greatest tree programmer of them all, and added a huge amount to the game.
One thing that I recall is that the original prototype for The Sims, written by Jamie (in C++) was written for the Mac. When he ported it to Windows, he introduced some Mac-like data abstraction layer to make the Mac code work on Windows, and some of that survived in the shipped game. That must have made porting it back to the Mac particularly interesting (as did my somewhat flagrant use of the DirectX APIs in a way that I'm still embarrassed by).
One thing we considered doing was using Swatch Internet Time which looked like it might take off there for a minute or two, and that would have been an interesting twist how time worked in the game.
There is an ok history of The Sims at the Will-Wright Fansite ::.

We should try to get the SimCopter and another 3D Maxis games to pink flashing. Leftovers from that game are in The Sims 2 engine, according to Andrew Willmott's presentation "Shipping Sims 2".
Lego Island from 1997 has been decompiled because it also suffers from pink flashing on modern PCs
