A scene in a book that will stay with me forever is in the school for good and evil where the unpopular, not-so-pretty girl gets a makeover and she���s so happy she’s running through the halls with a big smile on her face and all the students are looking at her differently and she’s thinking wow this must have been a great makeover and so she looks in the mirror and absolutely nothing’s changed about her except for the fact that she’s smiling now like younger me reading that, reading how nothing about her appearance changed except that she smiled for the very first time, the notion that I didn’t need to change myself, just smile, made me fucking cry and even now to this day years later I think about that scene and how fucking powerful it was

Callis Survives AU

*cracks neck* so. 

I find it VERY hard to believe a bunch of villagers w spears could have killed someone so powerful (everyone always fights about how she died but if I remember correctly it says in TLEA that the villagers advanced and she fell, or something to that effect, so I think it was them, not the fire)

So they THINK they killed her, but bc they’re all horrible people they just. Leave her there and hope someone else is going to move her body

Yeah uh she’s not dead. She prepared for this. She knows how to slow her own heartbeat. She’s injured for sure and she can’t go anywhere because they got her in the legs, but she ain’t dead

Honora comes to get her body in the middle of the night, bc Stefan had a crisis of conscience but is still too concerned w Sophie, so Honora decides she’s gonna do it… Scares the absolute shit out of her when Callis starts talking lmao

She sneaks Callis back up to Graves Hill and helps her treat her own injuries, and goes to see her under the pretence of overseeing the burial (I mean, they do LIVE IN THE GRAVEYARD lmao).

Callis packs all her shit (and some of Agatha’s), thanks Honora, thinks “fuck this stupid village” and the second she can walk on her own, takes the grave portal into the Woods

It’s been like a month or two by this time so it’s probably like, just as they’re about to go face Rafal. The sun is literally melting and Callis gets into the Woods and immediately knows this is some Rafal shit.

But she’s got like, nothing– no way to help them, no weapons and she can’t even track them yet bc her magic is kinda burnt out

So she goes home. I detail this in the Never Tedros fic but I headcanon she’s a member of the (in)famous Wardwell clan of Netherwood, who are this really rich, influential family, basically like a mafia, who are well known for producing really goddamn good sorcerers. She’s not quite as healed as she thought and basically collapses at their doorstep

Everyone loses their shit bc they ALSO thought she was dead and Eris (her sister) is mad as hell lmao. Everyone’s also mad that she just LEFT for like 15 years but u know. Whatever she’s back now. She’s not really in good enough shape to go barrelling across the Woods, and no one will let her, so she’s just fuming at home sending pissy messages to Merlin and the League of 13 as everyone splits up for their quests.

Merlin does not think to tell Agatha that her mother is not dead. Because he’s useless. And to be fair he’s a bit busy being Not Allowed in Camelot

Callis is in a similar position, since her clan has never been welcome in Ever kingdoms, generally, and Arthur explicitly banned them after Callis wrote to him telling him he was a git after Guinevere fled (she was in the same year as them at school).

She tries like 20 different ways to contact Agatha and none of them work, and doesn’t manage it before Rhian does his coup and she’s really mad at herself

So the second Agatha goes on the run, she extends her family’s massive influence. Nevers just pretend not to see her or run the hell away if they do. People who go after her mysteriously have bad things  happen to them :/ oh no.

Simultaneously, Callis has gone after Agatha in one of the family’s carriages they r very cool

The reason Rhian’s patrol never catch Agatha is bc Callis may have uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh disposed of them

She finally catches her near Sherwood Forest but Agatha is convinced it’s a trick and just BOLTS into the shrubbery and Callis has to literally jump out and run after her and nearly falls in like two ponds it’s not fun

it takes her a Very Long Time to convince Agatha it’s not a trick but eventually the thing that does it is the absolute Rage when she finds out Merlin didn’t tell Agatha anything or pass any messages on

Agatha cries in her arms for like three hours whilst Callis tries to understand what the hell has been happening

then Agatha accidentally lets slip about her uhh minor beef w Tedros at the end of QFG

HE SAID WHAT MOM NO IT WASN’T LI I’LL HAVE HIS HIS HEAD MOM PLEASE THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS IS KEEPING HIM ALIVE OH I’LL KEEP HIM ALIVE ALRIGHT SO I CAN KILL HIM

yea takes a while for Tedros to win back favour w Callis after that (not that he ever rly had it in the first place hh). like until after OTK kind of while. 

hmm what else. this isn’t properly planned out beyond like qfg/acot but it would probably all be over a lot faster wouldn’t it, seeing as scims are susceptible to fire and Callis appears to be rather good at fire

random scenarios ig? Robin Hood refuses to help Agatha, then makes eye contact w Callis and changes his mind lest he get his ass handed to him like he did back in first year. several times. Similarly, Hort will never be the same again after suggesting they just straight up kill Agatha in OTK. ever. every other adult gets an absolute bollocking for being useless and unhelpful and endangering the kids including the rest of the league of thirteen who get rounded up like elderly sheep, and Callis’s ex-students who r pretty confused about why she looks different (bc she keeps herself looking like Agatha even after Agatha’s insistence she doesn’t have to)

Random Burn trivia no one asked for

Now I've finished and nothing will be a spoiler

I was originally going to write Tedros's recovery and Agatha's coronation but didn't think it was worth it since nothing much interesting would happen. I'm going to reuse the foundation of one of the scenes in the Never!Tedros fic

I found out that a lot of people didn't seem to know what the handkerchief thing in the tournament was? It was a medieval thing where ladies threw a ribbon/handkerchief/glove to their chosen champion, it got rly romanticised as like a courtly love thing and I thought it was fun lmao

Also I've seen people recreating jousting before lmao it's a Lot I enjoyed writing it

I briefly considered giving Agatha lightning like the firebenders in avatar but I couldn't find anything scientific to justify it apart from "lightning hot"

The reason Tedros tried to pull Agatha's veil off in chapter 21 is bc he thought he was dying and wanted to see her face haha that's fun right hahaha

Weatherford was originally intended to be Rhian, but I thought if I did that no one would trust him at ALL and wouldn't believe his good intentions, so I had to make him an OC

The Painting was written pretty much completely spontaneously, it wasn't in my plan

My favourite scenes, in no real order, are the bit between Callis and Agatha and ceremony (both in the first wedding chapter-- the ceremony even made ME anxious) the jousting scene in the tournament (the :O of the Gavaldon lot and the handkerchief thing were fun) the first time Agatha coughs up embers on the ship (good scene for her and Callis), Agatha stealing and burning the painting and Callis coming to find her, Tedros and Agatha in the epilogue, and the bit where Agatha has a crisis in the second wedding chapter and Tedros produces her own handkerchief hhh. Oh and both times I compared Tedros to a penguin.

I have a v early draft of the scene where tagatha meet for the first time from Tedros's POV but I thought I liked it better from Agatha's so I went w that instead

Alex's story at the end is a nod to the first chapter of Alex Vs

I went through a lot of different ways of how I could do the powers reveal before I settled on the one I eventually did; Agatha accidentally catching him training and her seeing him get mad at the courtiers were the main two but I like the one I did better

I chose a lot of pearls for Agatha's outfits bc they don't burn or melt very well they're pretty hardy

The thing is, despite her best efforts, she’s imagined this moment a million times.-- from the wedding part 1, the bit where Tedros is about to pull agatha's veil back; I considered being a PROPER bitch and starting the chapter with a nightmare sequence for Agatha the night before the wedding, where she dreams that Tedros is horrified by her appearance and rejects her, but decided that was a bit too much and I might kill @ladylesso

The scene where Sophie pushes Agatha out of the window in the painting was written with "haha she does this in book 1" in mind lol

And my ultimate crushing favourite that I couldn't get into the fic but can't resist telling you; when Alex was born and they worked out she had fire magic, Agatha refused to go to sleep bc she was terrified Alex would do what she did and hurt herself, Tedros and Callis had to take it in turns to watch Alex all night so that Agatha wouldn't just be awake for like a week

the end of an era 😔

some fic updates: the next chapter of burn will be the epilogue, i.e the last one (sorry D: but all good things come to an end) and after that I’ll be moving onto the Never! Tedros fic as promised, which I think will probably only be two parts, but will most likely end up long as HELL, but we’ll see. obviously I’ll still be working on Ros Vs, though! after the Tedros one,,, not sure. maybe that celebrity AU I was on about a while back?
