          he feels bad, almost.  like a burden.  it’s not as if he’s consciously being useless in this moment, but there’s still that familiar pang that brings back that slight slouch and worried frown.  curse his dad for these sensitive genes.  as cool as they could be, duke, right now, could seriously live without the touchy senses.     `   sorry i’m not really making this any easier on you,   `     he apologized sincerely, logically unnecessarily but mentally otherwise.

i’m too tired to full on para meta about duke and relationships, so here’s a small bullet point of things so i don’t forget:

a “few close friends” kind of guy; it’s easy for him to go with the flow and to make friends, and he’s not really one to lie about himself or be dishonest about aspects of himself, but even so, there are very few people he lets get close, you know? (i.e.; middletown cell, bruce) it takes a lot of trust building and time together, so unless you’ve known him for awhile or have heard stuff about him from the grapevine, you’re most likely not going to know about the more intimate details of his life.

he takes friends / family seriously. he will do anything for them, and if something ever happens to someone he cares about, he will go to great lengths to ensure that they are fine. he’s very respectful of others’ boundaries, and will never force anyone to open up / talk about something they don’t want to talk about.

the reason for both these things is bc? he hasn’t really had anyone in his life ??? aside from his parents, grandma (SOBS we miss u grandma th/mas :(( come back), and cousin, he’s. always been really independent. so like. making friends, finding a home in others...it really does mean a lot, you know? for him to be able to have that. thank you.

tbh, the kid isn’t? at all romance-orientated. even when he’s in a romantic relationship, he isn’t particularly cutesy or anything like that. he doesn’t do petnames, doesn’t really do pda. he’s very casual with it, and both when in / out of a relationship, very work and school focused. that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t love his s/o endlessly, though! he’s just. not the most romantic guy and stuff. (see: insight on his and izzy’s relationship + him 24/7 lmao)

Hi! I love Duke Thomas so much, but I often really struggle to get a handle on characters. Do you have any advice for writing him? Favorite comics that really show off his personality? Thank you!

Sorry I’m getting to this so much later than it was sent! But! Yeah! So! Duke!

The general fandom has painted Duke as worrier, someone who has been thrown waaaaay out of their depth by joining up with all the Bats and Birds in Gotham. And that is entirely antithetical to Duke? Let me explain.

Duke’s path to heroism before he ever meets Batman. It starts when he meets Bruce Wayne. He meets Gotham’s prodigal son during the Zero Year event, when his parents bring the unconscious Wayne into their home. When they meet, Duke is already studying up and planning to take on the Riddler by himself. He’s all of 10 at this point, and there’s a man who has taken over the entire city, and Duke is completely unafraid. The consequences for failing the Riddler’s test are dire, but it doesn’t matter. Duke is willing, Duke is ready.

After this, we see the next major development of Duke’s personality. Batman, who Duke has looked up to since he was rescued in the wilds of the Zero Year while fishing, is gone. And so are his parents. Duke enters foster care and essentially becomes a problem child. He has gained a deep distrust of authority and a fierce independence. He bounces around foster homes because he refuses to stay put and be used, because he has learned to rely on himself for his needs. He’s had it rough. He develops his manifesto of “Robin doesn’t need Batman”, which is a perfect summation of how he operates as a hero. Further still, Duke chose the vigilante life on his own. He recognizes it’s crazy and irresponsible and he can’t help it, it’s called to him.

He joins and even leads a division of the We Are Robin Movement, and we see him developed a bit further in relation to Bruce specifically. By this point he has deduced the identities of 3 members of the Batfamily (Bruce, Dick, and Damian), and knows that Bruce is hiding from himself. He confronts him on it, calls Bruce on his bs, and that’s another important facet to Duke’s personality. He doesn’t take shit. At all. Duke stands firm in his identity and doesn’t take others being untrue to themselves lightly. Duke is perceptive enough to call someone’s bluff.

Now, while Duke is fully prepared for crazy and being a hero, he is still unsure of what that means in relation to the Batfamily. Note that this isn’t the same as feeling out of his depth; Duke would be a vigilante regardless of the others. He already was one. But now that he’s in the gold, he has doubts as to what that actually means. He’s not like them, but only because he’s not in the dark. He literally operates in the light. He’s not hiding. Because he’s not afraid of who he is and what is in him.

As far as recommended reading, definitely his appearance in Zero Year and We Are Robin. The backups in All-Star Batman, definitely. And Batman and The Signal. Those are the real highlights for me.
