Is it normal if you like liminal spaces?
I always thought I had a weirdo taste for liking liminal spaces all the way from childhood and even had dreams about it. Also I liked cruising these places in games where developers put minimal effort on maps but somehow made us like the environment more. but when I found other people are interested in this topic too it made me wonder. Is it normal to like this kind of stuff?
When I found out. The answer is: Clearly Yes! You can like liminal spaces and there is no weirdness for it at all. Here are some reasons why It's completely normal like being or imagining these kind of environments;
The fascination with liminal spaces can be attributed to several psychological factors:
Sense of Mystery and Intrigue: Liminal spaces often evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue because they exist in a state of transition or ambiguity. The uncertainty about what lies beyond or the history behind these spaces can stimulate curiosity and imagination.
Nostalgia and Sentimentality: Liminal spaces, such as abandoned buildings or empty streets, can evoke feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality. They may remind individuals of past experiences or evoke a sense of longing for a different time or place.
Sense of Adventure: Exploring liminal spaces can provide a sense of adventure and excitement, as individuals venture into unknown or off-limits areas. The thrill of exploration and discovery can be inherently rewarding and satisfying.
Reflection and Contemplation: Liminal spaces often provide an opportunity for introspection and contemplation. The quiet and solitude of these spaces can encourage individuals to reflect on their thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
Aesthetic Appeal: Liminal spaces often possess a unique aesthetic appeal characterized by decay, abandonment, and architectural remnants. Some individuals are drawn to the visual beauty and raw authenticity of these spaces, finding inspiration in their weathered textures and eerie atmospheres.
Sense of Freedom: Liminal spaces, particularly those that are abandoned or forgotten, may offer a sense of freedom from societal norms and expectations. In these spaces, individuals may feel liberated to explore and express themselves without judgment or constraint.
Psychological Comfort: Paradoxically, some individuals may find psychological comfort in liminal spaces. The sense of detachment from the bustling world outside and the quiet solitude of these spaces can provide a refuge from the demands and stressors of everyday life.
Overall, the appeal of liminal spaces is multifaceted and varies from person to person. It often involves a complex interplay of emotions, memories, and psychological needs, ultimately contributing to a sense of fascination and allure.
