Small, lovely details

Pairing: Neteyam x gn! reader, Childhood (?) friends to lovers!

In which loving you comes too naturally he didn’t realized he was in love before.

Warnings: English is not my first language so there could be some errors, childhood (briefly mentioned) friends to lovers, just fluff that’s it. I hope you like it!

At first, it wasn’t obvious to him, after all it wasn’t like the love stories he often heard from his parents or the humans at the lab (that he didn’t liked much to visit, he found a bit disgusting the way the air smelled inside there), it was quiet, warm in a way he always found comfort in.

His heart didn’t paced faster like his father said it did for him every time he looked at his mother even after 18 years of being together, his face didn’t heated up like Spider’s did every time he looked at his sister when he thought no one was seeing (it was very obvious and it got a bit on his nerves), he didn’t stuttered like some guys did when the one they like engaged in a conversation with them, and he definitely wasn’t like Lo’ak, acting all clumsy when he caught a crush on a girl and tried (and failed) to impress her.

So when a friend of his, joked that he had to have a crush on you because of the way he looked at you, pointing the reasons out when a confused Neteyam asks him what he is talking about, everything began to come into pieces.

He realize it was little things, quiet, familiar ones that settled in the deeps of his heart- of his soul, that he didn’t noticed until he was so down for you he wouldn’t be able to take out the roots of you off his heart even if he tried to (not that he wanted to).

It was the way your nose crinkled when you saw something that disgusted you, the little hum you did when you ate your favourite food, the little excited jump you did every time you shoot in the bullseye when you practiced with your bow, the way your touch was gentle every time you comforted him when he fell like breaking down from all the stress and expectations he had as the Olo’eyktan’s son, how warm your hand was every time he hold it when he leaded you through the forest or in between the crowds every time they held something important in the clan, how soft your voice were when you called his name, the way your eyes sparkled every time you looked at him, as if he held the stars just in front of you.

It was every little detail about you that he had committed to memory that enamoured him, that he held closely to his heart.

So when he fully comes to terms with the new feelings he didn’t knew about before (which didn’t took much effort to him), he committed to pursue them, to court you.

He asked his father for advices once, only to quickly realize his father sucked when it came to matters of the heart, leaving the tent wondering how his mother fell in love with him to begin with.

Then he went to his mother, and after a bit embarrassing talk about how grown up he was, he finally has some advice that is actually helpful, so he begins with his courting.

Neteyam was never the shy type when it came to showing affection towards his family or you (though maybe it was a bit more awkward with his father), so he’s confident with his approach to you.

Despite that, it wasn’t like he was screaming to everyone in Pandora he harvoured feelings for you, it also came in quiet, attentive ways, that he definitely knew you understood when your relationship with him begins to shift.

It was the way he got more attentive with you from what he already was, offering to go to harvest fruits in the forest when you ran out of them in your home a bit more than usual, lingering touches every time his hand brushed against yours while you walked, stargazing at your special soot with him you discovered not long after moving to the Hallelujah Mountains, his gaze never leaving you, always seeking your presence among the clan even if he was busy at the moment, among many other things that might not been too relevant to others, but that spoke volumes to you.

He’s not even nervous when he finally confess to you (in reality he was, a bit, but not really because of what you might answer) he’s confident, not stuttering for a bit as he pours his heart in front of you. He knew that you returned his feelings, he could see it in the way your gaze shifted when you were with him, when you looked at him with those big amber eyes as if he meant the world to you.

Still, a very pleasant feeling sets in his heart when you replied you returned his feelings.

It was very easy to love you, it always was, even when he didn’t knew he loved you to such expenses. It was quiet, familiar in a way it all came so naturally he couldn’t not love you, after all, it always was the two of you together while growing up, as if you two were destined from the beginning to be together.

And if it was Eywa’s will, who was he to oppose to it?
