❤️KAPPA RED❤️

Kappa: Audacious

The average kappa are child-sized humanoids, who sport a turtle-like beak, shell, and scaly skin that varies in color from shades of green, to vibrant red or blue. Their most distinct feature is the large concave area in their heads which carries water. The water is the source of a kappa's powers and if it depletes the kappa will grow weak and possibly die. Three things are most important to kappa: mischief, cucumbers, and passing gas. Though not all Kappa are wicked tricksters. Kappa have been known to make friends with both humans and other yokai. Although stubborn, a kappa that has made a promise is loyal to the end.

Audacious Trickster:

Red is the type who laughs in the face of authority. She does as she pleases and doesn’t apologize to anyone. These traits are not befitting of a leader. It's difficult for Red not to let her love of mischief hinder herself and her team. She's had to adapt her style of leadership to suit her unorthodox behavior. Her constant jeering of the enemy and indomitable positivity help to keep the team in high spirits. Some of her antics may stir up trouble with her friends now and then, but on the battlefield, her hairbrained schemes and unpredictable nature make her a fierce opponent. She won’t let anything, even her own shortcomings, keep her down.

🩵TATSU BLUE🩵

Tatsu: Enduring

Tatsu are the classic serpentine dragons that are depicted throughout Chinese and Japanese culture. Their long bodies are often adorned with scales, spines, ridges, horns, antlers, and several sets of legs. These dragons are connected strongly with water, and many dwell in deep rivers and lakes or in the sea. They are seen as godlike creatures and their temperment can range between kind and tranquil or spiteful and terrible. Most Tatsu don't concern themselves with human affairs and prefer to stay in their own domain unless they are directly affected.

Enduring Spirit:

Blue behaves like a body of water. Most of the time, he is placid and serene. Blue can maintain his calm and patience through distressing circumstances, but like everyone he has a breaking point. If pushed to his limit, blue can release a tidal wave of passion, rage, or anguish. Though seemingly strong and disciplined, his emotions are deceptively deep and profound. In battle, this surge of emotion can cause devastation like a hurricane, with the swiftness of mountain rapids.

🤍YUREI WHITE🤍

Yurei: Spirit

Typically, yurei appear dressed either in the white robes of burial or in the garments they wore as they died. Yurei manifest as hazy and nearly transparent images of the dead. These ghosts are commonly tethered to the physical world to haunt the ones they have left behind, be it living family members or the perpetrator responsible for an untimely demise. Lost souls can only pass on to the afterlife if their purpose of remaining is fulfilled or if they are laid to rest by a priest performing an exorcism.

Ecto Explorer:

Being granted the powers of yokai is proof that there are realms that exist beyond this world. White has taken this as their opportunity to learn and explore these supernatural possibilities. They're always asking questions and forming theories, White relies on their collection of knowledge to aid the team in battle. Though White may seem timid initially, once they open up they enjoy discussion and scientific debate. Their yurei powers allow them to slip past the enemy using stealthy maneuvers, similar to how they’ve often been dismissed and underestimated by others.

🧡TENGU ORANGE🧡

Tengu: Brooding

There are several types of tengu in Japanese lore. This ranger, specifically, takes aspects of the daitengu and kotengu (greater and lesser tengu, respectively). The silver crest on the top of the helmet is shaped as such to mimic the long nose that daitengu is depicted with, but with wing shapes to represent the bird-like appearance that kotengu have. Daitengu are solitary but intelligent, and their intelligence makes them formidable and terrible. They typically live on high secluded mountaintops.

Brooding Soldier:

Orange is new to being part of a group. He has been on his own for so long it’s hard for him to adjust to a team dynamic. Vulnerability makes him uncomfortable, and he likes to process his feelings on his own. Orange uses clever tricks to redirect the focus of discussion away from himself. He doesn't want to burden others with his baggage. His team tries to help him learn to unwind and let go of the tension he’s been carrying. He has a group of friends now, not just a team, a group that supports each other no matter what.

🩷ONI PINK🩷

Oni: Demon

Described as being taller and stronger than any human, having multiple horns on their head and sharp fang-like tusks. Oni are most commonly depicted with red or blue skin, but different types of Oni have varying skin color and numbers of horns, eyes, fingers and toes. They are characterized as being brutish and ferocious.

Demon Machine:

Like an Oni, Pink has the greatest brute strength of the team. Though many assume pink is a meathead, he is actually quite tactical when it comes to fighting. His sturdy frame allows him to take a few hits and thereby learn the enemy’s attack patterns so he can adapt to them as the fight progresses. Pink is very much the dad figure to the team. In the same way that he studies his opponents, he observes and adapts to provide for the needs of his teammates. Pink just wants to help them grow into the best versions of themselves.

Hanzoku Sentai Genshōger

Loosely translating as Bandit Squadron Phenomenon-Rangers.

Genshōger is an original team of my design with a Japanese folklore inspired, ninja, and yokai motif. Since yokai are typically the villains this team is made up of more anti-hero type characters, they lean toward good but stay mainly in a gray area. Within their world, the real villains are the powers-that-be, who report the Genshōgers as being evil and this is what's widely believed by the general public.

The five members are social outcasts and undesireables who fight against insurmountable odds but are committed to defending the truth.

Spirit of the Scarab!

Shizenger's sixth hero is a warrior from an ancient civilization. Her morpher, the Scarab Scimitar, was bestowed upon her by the ghosts of a long forgotten line of kings when she stumbled upon their tomb.

She was transported to present day by a mysterious force, to give aid to the Shizenger team. She speaks plainly and at times her bluntness seems cruel, but she means well. An excellent judge of character, she is difficult, if not impossible, to manipulate. Her unique perspective and determination make ShizenKing a force to be reckoned with.

My take on the insects X royalty motif, another ranger I designed before I knew KingOhger was coming. And on top of that a white sixth ranger like their Spider Kumonos lol. It's not intentional, I swear.

Here's a gif I animated to showcase how the Shizenger's Meta-Morphers work.

Each ranger has one with their own color and antenna design.

The Meta-Morpher is worn on the left wrist and when the lever on the bottom is pulled the antenna spring up from within the body of the morpher.

I loved looking at this from a real world perspective, asking how a toy version of this morpher would work and what functions it might have.

The main team is united!

I did my best to emulate the sort of promotional images and locations that you see in a lot of toku photos, specifically Sentai. I'm a beginner at drawing backgrounds though.

A little something about the song "Hikoukigumo"

So as some of you might know, I went to Japan a week ago and got to watch the new Studio Ghibli movie, Kaze Tachinu. While it was a great movie, what really touched me was the theme song, “Hikoukigumo�� sang by Yuming. My mother and I were lucky enough to watch an interview where one of the producers of Kaze Tachinu talked about how Yuming reacted to Miyazaki wanting to use her song in the movie. She was delighted- but probably not for the reason you think.  

In case you didn’t know, “Hikoukigumo” was not written for Kaze Tachinu, as most Ghibli movie theme songs are. Yuming wrote it when she was 16. When Miyazaki heard it he chose it, saying that it was perfect for the movie. 

Yuming wrote “Hikoukigumo” because of a very close friend she had since Elementary school. Her friend had a weak constitution and was constantly ill. At the early age of 14, Yuming started her singing career and traveled around, taking voice lessons and performing. When she returned to her home town and visited her friend’s house, she was greeted by a shrine and the news of her friend’s death. 

In her sadness, Yuming wrote “Hikoukigumo” and recorded it, however it was never a success compared to her other songs. So when Miyazaki contacted her and told her he wanted to use it in his film, she was overjoyed. 

I wanted to pass this on, because “Hikoukigumo” is already such a lovely song, but when you know the background behind it it becomes even more touching. Now my mother and I can’t listen to it without tearing up! This song is the most popular song in Japan right now, you hear it practically everywhere (something that I’m sure Yuming is happy about). If you have the time, I recommend you to listen to it with the lyrics at hand.

Red is a man on a path to redemption. Once a successful young businessman, he was ruthless. He became cold and apathetic towards people in need. He didn't realize the vile nature of his behavior until his own family was pushed away. Now, he's been given a chance to redeem himself by becoming ShizenRed. He must learn to lead with humility and fight with honor for the greater good.

Violet is unpredictable. A drifter, coming and going as he pleases, his teammates aren't sure how dependable he is. His carefree nature and thirst for the open road make it hard to tell if he's committed to his duties as a ranger.

Green is a student and the youngest member of the team. He is constantly learning, both in his studies and on the battlefield. His sense of nobility makes him seem naive. But it's his noble heart and strength of his will that makes Green the perfect addition to the team.

Blue is easygoing, and can seem flighty or indecisive. But they have a kind heart. Blue only wants their fellow rangers to get along and work together as a team.

With a cicada's tough exterior, Black often finds it difficult to be vulnerable. Though her stature is small, do not underestimate her strength. She's loud, she's brash, she'll throw you in the trash!
