When I was younger I had a dream that I was watching the apocalypse alongside Lucifer.

He told me about how the history of the celestial kingdom had been pre-ordained. He'd been destined to fall because that was the universe that God had willed. That he had loved God so much that when the time came to disobey, he did so obediently, to pave the way for the Heavenly Plan that had been set in motion before he had ever even come into existence.

He told me that he played the role he'd been born for, without complaint, for eternity. That tempting man to sin had been a part of that plan, because God could not himself tempt Adam and Eve, but free will in humanity could not exist without disobedience.

He told me that we - WE. All of us - had been destined to end up here since the first breath of the infant universe. That even though us humans were scared and hurting in the end times, that it was all part of The Plan, and that he'd had a lot of time to come to terms with it.

He told me that he didn't like to see people suffer like that. He told me that whatever humanity might think of him, that seeing us like this saddened him.

I think about Lucifer a lot. An Angel, who did exactly what was expected of him. Who fulfilled his celestial duty and became the most hated being in existence for it. I think about how Lucifer means 'bearer of light,' like Prometheus bound to the rock for gifting humanity the heat of fire. An Act of God.

I think about sitting on top of a crumbling rooftop with him, discussing the nature of his role in the universe and how despite how humanity loathes him, we're both still children of God, united by the most unbreakable bond that creation has to offer. For one quiet moment within the chaos of Armageddon, I sat there with my sibling and mourned the suffering of humanity.

I miss him.

What if I fall?

“What if I fall?” asked Lucifer, his eyes teary. He really was afraid of falling. Michael smiled softly to his little brother. “Oh, my little Morningstar, but what if you fly?” Lucifer was young, his wings were still so smal. Lucifer looked down from the edge of heaven. “Will you catch me if I fall?” Michael spread his giant wings. “Always.” With that, Lucifer jumped. And, well, Michael was there to catch him.

“What if I fall?” asked Lucifer, his eyes teary. He really was afraid of falling. Michael’s eyes were filled with sadness and rage. “You will fall into a unholly place, to a cage ” Lucifer made a mistake, his wings were broken and his grace was wounded. Lucifer looked down from the edge of heaven. “You said you’s catch me if I fall. Always.” Michael raised his blade. “Not anymore” With that, Lucifer was cast out. And, well, Michael just stood and watched.
