movie/musical glinda is a morally complicated woman who ultimately decides she's going to be a good person

book glinda is a sopping wet moldy towel of a woman whose inherent patheticness prevents her from being useful for 95% of the series

billie burke glinda is probably supposed to be the oz stand-in for dorothy's mother (sending dorothy off and helping her when needed but ultimately letting her discover herself on her own) and as such she's a bitch who made a child take a long walk in heels and goes around throwing a ton of shade with a petty little smile (again, obviously a mother figure of sorts)

og lfb glinda is a machiavellian pyscho who conspired to put a child she transed on the throne, is basically said child's grand vizier, convinced the child to cut of oz from the rest of the world, and spends her days lounging in her palace with one hundred of the most beautiful maidens in the fairyland of oz at her beck and call. a genuinely insane overpowered lesbian sleeper agent there is something deeply wrong with this woman

the thing about the "yeah wicked has queer undertones but its fundamentally about the rise of fascism" takes that go around sometimes is that they complete miss that these things are not mutually exclusive. wicked is about fascism, told through the lens of glinda and elphaba's relationship. literally the entire musical is how they navigate their relationship in an increasingly authoritarian oz, how elphaba forces glinda to come to terms with her own complicity and cruelty in a system she's only benefitted from, how glinda provides a safe space for elphie and shows up for her even when the world is against her, how even as the world tears them apart they still find each other and lean on each other and grow from each other, and how their love for each other is ultimately what changes them and oz for the better. their love is challenged by their different responses to injustice and the way elphaba is othered and vilified, but it remains the through line of the narrative. their love for each other is tangled up with the politics of the musical

sometimes i think about how proud elphaba would be if she saw the oz glinda creates post-canon, how happy it'd make her to see Animals and humans living side by side, how proud she'd be that glinda's truly grown into the best version of herself and makes the people of oz almost as happy as she makes elphie. then i remember elphaba is stuck being exiled in the fucking desert with fiyerocrow or whatever and stare of into the distance forlornly

if you’re having a bad day just remember that glinda upland is having a substantially worse one (she just lost her wife to a bucket of water thrown onto her by a twelve-year-old girl and now she’s forever locked within the vicious cycle of her own self-curated image alongside the immense and almost certainly lifelong guilt over not being able to save her old school roommate, who came into the world unloved and left it similarly unloved. only that’s not entirely accurate, because glinda loved her. loves her. but there’s nothing heavier in this life than a love that will never see the light of day)
